Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

aka Sorry you're still feeling poorly. Give yourself time to feel better. I'm sure you'll be back on track soon Smile Thanks

Thank you to all who told me not to change anything, and I would start losing again after a 2 week gain/stall. You were right!! I've lost 1.5lbs this week, which brings my total to 13.5lbs lost in 7 weeks Smile

Can't believe I've lost nearly a stone.......yay!!!

I feel so much better. I was aiming for 2st off by Christmas, but dare I hope for more ?!! Why didn't they discover this woe years ago? Would have saved me years of dieting!

Fasting today. Changing from Tuesday/Thursday to Monday /Thursday. I think it will be better to spread it out a bit more.

The fasts seem to get easier as the weeks go by. I have the odd bad one, but on the whole it's very doable now, and I feel relaxed about it. My body has definitely adjusted to fasting now. I go from 5pm-5pm with just a cup of marmite at 3pm. Never thought I would be able to do that.

I started at 13st 3.8lb and now I am 12st 4.4lb. My next mini goal is to be in the 11's. Haven't been in the 11's since I was in my teens (I'm 39 now!) so that will be really something!

Thank you for this thread, it's amazing!

Good luck to all fellow fasters today, and to all those on NFDs ENJOY !

SoTiredAgain · 10/06/2013 09:26

peplum I'm hoping to change my name soon to notsotired Grin.

Emily. Good advice for aka and aka, take it easy and take good care of yourself. Yes, maybe aim for 6:1 at the end of the week but only if your body feels up to it.

ELR. Interesting about the pain in the article.

Another fd today. I would have fasted on Wednesday but I'm working all day this Wednesday and I'm not sure I can do it on a full work day.

My TDEE is 1480. I have not been religiously counting calories on NFD, but I have a good idea of how much I am consuming because of calorie counting in the past. I am actually not going up to my TDEE, more about 1200/1250. Is this ok or should I really try to go up to my TDEE?

horseylady · 10/06/2013 09:29

It's a 9 day detox, the first two being shakes and water only, then shakes twice a day and a meal at night. I'm doing the detox with friends to kick start a new wol. I think I'll find the fasting less tough after the detox. So I will still have two fast days this week and will probably fit two in the following week. Will see how it works!

peplum41 · 10/06/2013 09:30

JB30 love that Monday morning pity party expression!

Some people don't lose at first, then shoot off like a rat up a drainpipe, while others, like me, lose a stone really quickly then come grinding to a stop. Probably pans out about the same if you look at the long ,long term view. Dr M does mention that body fat is incredibly energy dense, so can take a bit of shifting. Patience is definitely required, but the idea is you eat tasty stuff 5 days a week so don't get fed up and pack it in. Plus, the health benefits, yes I know we all want the size 10 jeans, but
those health benefits are so numerous, it is worth it for them alone.

outtolunch Flowers sorry to hear about your bad news. Yes, you can fast today, I kept going yesterday because I felt my digestive tract needed a rest, and feel so much better for it today.

SoTiredAgain · 10/06/2013 09:30

Fluffypillow. Well done. Grin. That's great news.

swallowedAfly · 10/06/2013 09:32

just carefully waving a weary hello Smile

everything went fine and i am home and coping albeit very sore and a bit groggy still.

TonytheFish · 10/06/2013 09:38

aka Hope you feeling better soon.

outto Sorry to hear about your bad news.

Morning all, today was weigh in day, I am down another 2lbs so that is 4lbs in total. I am quite surprised as it was DDs 4th birthday at the weekend so we had Burger King and Take out Pizza and cake etc! Still a long way to go, but, hey I can eat cake and not worry too much it seems!

I was going to weight after today, as today is a fast day (I from this week will fast Mon,Wed and Fri) but I feel better weighing after a NFD yet still seeing the weight coming off, if that makes sense!?

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 09:38

sotired I know the advice is to go up to TDEE, but I struggle to get to mine. I wont eat for the sake of it either. But I do see it as an allowance to go over or have several Wine on occasion. I also struggle to eat 500 on a fast day too, I even fling a choccie bar in for treat as desert!

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 09:40

saf hello! glad it all went well. hope your recovery is speedy Flowers

SoTiredAgain · 10/06/2013 09:43

Peplum. Totally agree with you re:health benefits. Whilst I want to lose the weight now because I have a holiday in August, I need to lose the weight permanently because my family medical history is full of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol problems. I am the only one in my family who does not take any medication and I want o remain like that for as long as possible.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 10/06/2013 09:46

SAF - glad it went well! Bet you can't wait to see the results. Look after yourself til you're feeling a bit better.
Eagle - that's interesting about the B12, I also have those injections, normally every 8 weeks, start feeling really rough after 6 weeks as my body seems to mainline the stuff! It will be interesting to start tracking when I feel crap again, hopefully it will improve.

Fast day for me today, but I'm at home when I normally do it at work, so not sure how this will end up. Going to get out for a run today, tried to do week 1 of C25K the other day and failed miserably! Determined to do it now, I don't like failing. Puts me in a bad mood. So I'm downloading some kick ass music as we speak, and I'm cracking it today.

10.2.75 now, so roughly 2lb of my week off weight increase gone. I find I lose after my first fast of the week, STS 2nd- anyone else like that? I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the timing of my eating, my body doesn't like me eating after a certain time, it needs a good 10-12 hours between eating and getting up in a morning to lose.

Dotty342kids · 10/06/2013 09:50

fluffypillow that is so good to hear! Well done for keeping faith and plodding on and being rewarded with a loss again, so important just to keep on with it and not lose heart Grin.

saf really pleased to hear from you and glad you're home safe and recovering. Hope you're being well looked after and that you continue to improve Flowers

peplum41 · 10/06/2013 09:52

em you must have a good kick, feeling focused and kate moss like; "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels". except cheese on toast

eagle I love mindless sleb tittle tattle, I really do. More like this! Don't watch corrie though, so no idea if they look slimmer.

sotiredagain very soon, you will feel great. Just takes a few weeks to get used to fasting. Re, eating under TDEE: I did something similar, for the first 2 weeks because I was in the zone, but knew it wouldn't last. Then, I was glad to eat my full TDEE, and then some on NFDs. Its ideal to have a stark contrast between FDs and NFDs to keep the metabolism guessing.

This post needs an emoticon, its too wordy. Brew for you fasters, and don't forget to keep hydrated on NFDs.

peplum41 · 10/06/2013 09:58

Waves to((( saf))) cant believe you're back so quick! Chill out and enjoy those strong painkillers, watch some tv. Bet you're glad its over.Smile

babyfatbutt · 10/06/2013 10:11

Shifted another 2 kilos! Hoorah! Was beginning to think I would never lose anything as it's been 3 kilos in six weeks, so has felt a bit slow.
I've not been all that good even about fasting..have had loads of birthdays etc and been ill, so some weeks have only been 6:1. fasting today and feel spurred on by the scales today :)

BetsyBell · 10/06/2013 10:12

My mantra today is 'coffee is needed'. I sometimes wonder if I should worry that caffeine has become a highly important food substitute since starting this WOL!

Fasting today after really quite pigging out at the weekend. I wish I hadn't, I'm feeling properly flabby after what feels like a lot of excess eating over a prolonged period. You know how we say to people who aren't losing to measure themselves? My weight is not increased much but my waistline has Blush.

I need to focus again.

Aka being ill is miserable but you need to be nice to yourself with foods that will help you get better; ice cream and chocolate just won't help at all - remember, the positive messages you're getting from your brain post-sugar are like those you'd get after taking hard drugs!

((hugs)) Focus on nutrition now and fast later when you feel better.

To the Monday Pity Partiers - we can do this!

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 10:13

break Its great and not great at the same time. I only get 12 weekly jabs and from 6/8 weeks in normally I supplement using sublinguals. I still crash badly with the sublinguals but it holds off the really bad side effects like dead arms, palpitations, etc. Now I've started this I didn't start sublinguals till 9 weeks in and only crashed last week. But the crash seemed to happen overnight when normally there's a slight build up. I'm sure the weight loss is helping too, but I also have enough energy to not need to go to bed at 830 and still be desperate for sleep come 7 the next morning.

peplum me too. Don't watch corrie either but I had notice Philip Schofield looking trimmer on This Morning. If I mention him people may start taking this woe more seriously.

virginposter · 10/06/2013 11:25

saf good to see you back. Your body has had a major shock so slow and steady will see you through. Put your feet up and allow yourself some indulgent recovery time Thanks

Chocupid · 10/06/2013 11:38

Hi saf glad all went well, just take things easy, be gentle with yourself, eat good nutrition and you will soon feel better. Flowers x

spababe · 10/06/2013 12:40

I have a question about TDEE. MFP has set it to 1200 but this is after I told it I wanted to loose 2lb a week. SHould I set it to 0 loss a week? and should I let it add back in the exercise cals from my fitbit?? Or on NFDs should I stick to the 1200?
I have been going up to 2000 on NFDs and whilst I think I can lower this on weekdays, I think I will still eat around 2000 at weekends (inc wine you see)
I'm asking because I seem to be putting weight ON !! Please can someone help!!

spababe · 10/06/2013 12:42

and thank you to whoever recommended the fitbit because I love it and I love the way it integrates to MFP

Dotty342kids · 10/06/2013 12:43

spababe, no, you need to set MFP to maintain your current weight to get the right amount of cals for your NFDs! And no, don't let it add back in the exercise cals either - that way you should start seeing the scales move in the right direction Smile

Talkinpeace · 10/06/2013 12:44

spababe
yup, to find your TDEE for non fasting days, tell it you are not losing weight.
I eat under my TDEE during the week to save for wine at the weekend
and remember that as you lose weight, your TDEE drops too ...

skylerwhite · 10/06/2013 12:46

postmanpatscat I weighed in this morning at 9st2, so want to get down to about 8st7 which appears to be my fighting weight. I was looking at my body this morning, and I think I am carrying most of this weight in my thighs. I always had really skinny legs, but they seem to have expanded massively in the last 6 months. So hoping that getting back to running regularly will sort that out. Plus from September I will be doing a 2 mile cycle commute to work each day, after almost a year of working from home. It's amazing how less active you become when your commute is from your bed to your desk...

spababe · 10/06/2013 12:46

thank you talkinpeace x
