The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

aka
that weight will mostly be fluid and undigested food : your body will not have laid it down as fat cells just yet.
So chances are if you get a couple of good fasts in over the next three weeks it will be gone.
Go for nice thick comfy vegetable soups and bean stews and veggie stir fries that are easy to swallow but make you feel full and cosy.

When I went to new york at Christmas I put on 7lb in 14 days. And lost it again in three weeks.

You'll be fine.

ELR · 09/06/2013 20:28

aka you will loose it again, try some if the lovely soups Mexican from the June cookbook thread they will be good for you. Try frozen yogurts and ice lollies with a few choccy ones thrown in. And remember that although the high calorie stuff may make you feel better its actually making you feel bad too. Don't be too hard on yourself though as you have done so well so far and there is no reason why you can't carry on loosing even if its a slow painful process.

Southeastdweller · 09/06/2013 20:33

cupcakes I binged the other day more than I had since starting this WOL. Had all the carbs within a one mile radius as well as a bottle of wine. I still lost - alot - because I did an extra fast day so maybe you could do this (as eagle suggested). Or do more exercise, or just not have any dinner at all tonight and an early night.

horseylady · 09/06/2013 21:11

Hello! Can I join?

Am planning on doing a detox this week and starting 5:2 afterwards to maintain/lose any additional.

Emilythornesbff · 09/06/2013 22:04

Hey aka
Sorry you're poorly.
I agree with others about soups. Loads of good varieties; some spicy, some smooth, filling, fresh or comforting. Something for every mood. I cba to cook lately so I buy a fresh soup like covent garden, glorious or supermarket similar.
Take a multi. Eat some fruit. Have a pint of water before eating.
I would also eat low fat yogurts (keeping an eye on the sugar in some of them) and if you need lollies then have them, just have either mini versions (like a mini magnum or a mini milk) or lower calorie options like those fruit smoothly things.
Now, I know these are full of sugar and I risk being flamed but in terms of calories a smoothie lolly carries at least 100 fewer cals than a magnum. Also, a mini twister comes in at about 50 cals I believe.
The sugar is probably acting as an analgesic too, as well as as the cooling effect of the lolly. So take some analgesics as that might help.
Oh, the other thing i'd be tempted to do is not neccessarily eat meals if you don't feel like it. A tub of Haagen dazs has fewer calories than a balanced meal followed by a tub of Haagen Dazs.
So, I prepare to be seriously flamed following that advice. But that's what i'd do as a temporary measure.
I hope you feel better soon.
You will get back on track. Don't weight yourself for a bit, it'll not be a tual fat yet.

Emilythornesbff · 09/06/2013 22:07

Hey horseylady tell us about your detox.

Also. Anyone regularly doing a zero fast or fluid only fast? Just think I need a boost.
Also also... Someone kick my arse re: over eating on NFDs.
Thanks
Em

peplum41 · 09/06/2013 22:26

Hi horselady you can start 5:2 at the same time as your detox!

cupcakes this last week has been all about the binge for me. Never mind, not done it for ages. Had indigestion so wasn't that great. Infact the nicest thing I ate yesterday was a stick of celery and a tomato which put the fire out in my poor, abused belly.

aka get well soon. You've worked too hard to give up now, but try and make a fresh start this week. Second what ELR said.Smile I wonder if you are finding it hard to get back into fasting because you have been doing ADF? It must be harder, and Dr M does warn us about fasting fatigue. What if you try to just 6:1 this week, ease yourself back in. I think this rush to lose weight can set us back, its rather a long process really. I had a bit of a freak out because I sulkily felt my new TDEE was going to feel like dieting every day. Oh, and another reason to not give up, I saw the one person I know who was doing 5:2 the other week, but she has packed it in. She looked really bloated and fat faced. That's not meant to sound as bitchy as it does, honest!

postmanpatscat · 09/06/2013 22:27

aka get well soon and don't beat yourself up

cupcake bet that high cal day will boost your metabolism and you've just done yourself a favour no scientific basis alert

skyler Flowers how far have you got to go? Are we friends on MFP or don't you use it?

postmanpatscat · 09/06/2013 22:29

Almost forgot... my sub 30 min 5k treat is going to be a meal out at a swanky veggie restaurant, The Gate in Hammersmith.

peplum41 · 09/06/2013 22:33

HI Em, ...aiming for left buttock...Boot!

If that works will you do mine please?

Southeastdweller · 09/06/2013 22:38

Envy postman. Let us know what it's like.

God luck to everyone fasting next week!

ELR · 09/06/2013 22:56

peplum ha ha that made me laugh about the real life bloated faced friend! I have one of those too she came for coffee on sat morning and she has fallen off the wagon a little and looked like she had gained but in the face and it really spurred me on to continue even though its a slow process.

alwaysanauntie · 09/06/2013 23:09

As we're all fessing up to naughty weekend goodies: it took me 2 hours to get DD to go to sleep whilst I was simultaneously trying to cook dinner for DH who had fallen asleep (to be fair to him he did do a full day shift yesterday then a 12 hour night shift last night on top of his usual Monday - Friday work so can't be too down on him) and I was in such a bad mood I downed 3 bottles of beer and a tub of ben & jerry's cookie dough ice cream (have just looked and about 920 cals just for ice cream Shock .

Looks like an extra fast day for me tomorrow....

akarucker · 10/06/2013 00:42

I knew I'd get top notch advice from you all here, thank you. I think you're all right in what you say. I especially think peplum, yes, the thought of going from feeling so ill into ADF is making me run the other way. I like the idea of 6:1 this week (maybe fd at the end of the week, if I feel better, or even make it a mini fast).

In the mean time, I will swap the ice creams for lollies, the chocolate for low cal hot chocolate drinks, the smoothies for my trusted banana/skimmed milk/ice frothy, eat delicious soups without the emphasis on fasting, and hopefully a week of that will get me out of my bind, and tie up nicely to when I start to feel better.

Thanks for the oodles of support. It's always so appreciated, and hopefully when I'm back on track I can be back on the other side of offering some advice!

akarucker · 10/06/2013 00:43

By the way peplum maybe I know you, and I'm the bloated faced girl whose fallen off the wagon!!!

JB30 · 10/06/2013 07:42

2 Monday's back up to my start weight, well ok half a pound under my start weight :( This is the start of my 4th week, so it's my 7th fast since I'm doing 5:2 - anyone else struggle with the first few weeks? I'm obviously going over on my nfds. Sigh. A woe that I think could actually get me to a healthy size but I am sabotaging it, it's a Monday morning pity party round my way as you can see!
Time to reassess and pull myself into line. Just under 5 weeks to my holidays. Desperate to drop some poundage

headintheclouds · 10/06/2013 07:49

aka agree with all the others on here ,dont be too hard on yourself, listen to your body ..Itll soon drop off again .

eaglerider thanks for the Corrie link...interesting that the actress with the rare muscle condition has said 5:2 has changed the pattern of her pain giving her longer periods between pain and 'crashing' . Thats got to be a good a reason as any other to stick with this WOE !
Good luck to todays fasters.

Dotty342kids · 10/06/2013 07:59

aka I do feel for you, it must be so frustrating to have lost and then gained a fair bit of it back due to no fault of your own!
As someone who's been feeling ill and rubbish since Friday, I can really sympathise with the desire to eat junk and "nice" things as opposed to healthy meals. My appetite has completely disappeared but I have managed to eat a couple f little ice creams and a few chunks of Dairy Milk still! I just think if that's what my body wants, I'm going to let it have it for now and I'll sort myself out once I'm feeling positive and well again.
Hope you are on the mend soon and can get yourself back on track Smile

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 08:02

hitc I found that interesting too. I have pernicious anaemia and am finding that I can cope for longer until I crash through lack of B12. I crashed last week, and am desperate for my jab on Wednesday but at least I haven't felt like this for 4-8 weeks as I usually would.

Emilythornesbff · 10/06/2013 08:33

peplum right back atcha. [aims for left butt cheek]

I checked my TDEE on MFP last night and (ok I set it to weight loss) was very pissed off to see 1200 cals. Even skipping lunch on my NFD didn't do that.
I basically want to eat cake and ice cream on NFDs and nothing on fasting days Grin that ain't gonna work.
Ok, fasting today. Total fast? (apart from maybe some milk in tea this afternoon) or sub 500? Hmmmmm.

outtolunchagain · 10/06/2013 08:33

New fasting day today , fell off the wagon spectacularly on Thursday evening after receiving some bad news Sadbut determined today will be good , I know I can do it because I managed last Monday .

angelabbie · 10/06/2013 08:52

I am feeling miserable at the moment. For three weeks I followed the 16/8 eating very healthily and much less than i would normally eat. For a week I have done the 5/2 and this is my second week. I have not lost a sausage, I just do not get it. My TDEE is 1700 and I am eating around 1500 for 4 days a week 500 for two and probably 2000 for a sat. Any ideas ladies, does it just take a while, am I being wildly impatient lol. I am also very grumpy today just to top it all off aaaaaaargggggg

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 08:56

outto sorry you've had bad news, don't add feeling guilty to that

angel have you taken any other measurements? or can you feel clothes fitting better? though I'm losing well I always put more stock in clothing fit.
