Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

peplum Aye lass! Blackburn Rovers supporter for my sins!

I'm a softie southerner, these days. Grin

It's a great site - the ethos on there is exactly the same as on here, which is why I post on both. Smile

ceebeegeebies · 09/06/2013 11:53

breadandwine & peplum - is the fact that you are a Rovers supporter (poor you Grin) a clue to where you live/lived?? As I 'may' live in that area myself Wink

Emilythornesbff · 09/06/2013 12:17

Hey. Been away for a bit. Managed to fast for my usual two days [polishes halo] but quite poggy on NfDs Blush.
Due for wi tomorrow but i'm worried my loss has stalled (any relation to piggyness?) so not keen on looking tbh. Well done losers.
Anyone fasting today?

postmanpatscat · 09/06/2013 13:33

Hello emily any reason why you think it has stalled or are you just being pessimistic? You might have a pleasant surprise!

I'm not fasting today but haven't eaten yet either. BBQ this pm to use up the meat left from yesterday's BBQ (with only one meat eater in the household it takes a while to use it up!) then gym this evening. Weighed myself this morning for first time in about a week, haven't fasted since Monday. I was 54kg which is 100g more than my lowest since reaching the maintenance stage so I'm pleased with that. Looks like 6:1 and 3-4 runs per week are doing the trick.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/06/2013 14:09

All you runners are very inspirational. I've been really struggling to get enough exercise in these past couple of weeks, mostly because days are so short now and its been pouring rain, but I'm sure its slowing down the weight loss. I'm back up to 61kg despite being religious about fast days and well behaved on NFDs (not tracking, but my mental calcs suggest it should be well within TDEE). That's a 6-7lb loss in five weeks, which is obviously okay, but only 2lb in the past three weeks, so my initial enthusiasm is clearly unsustainable!

Just completed a Sunday fast day. Wooo that was a struggle, but tomorrow is a Bank Hol here and DH has his heart set on roast beef lunch at the local pub.

SAF hoping you're recovering beautifully. And huge welldone Eagle!

BetsyBell · 09/06/2013 14:35

tortoise I barely run in the winter and not that often in the more clement months but I signed up for a 5k to keep my motivation up probably should have looked for a 10k.

Hello Emily - even maintaining or not going up too much is a victory of sorts when away. Hope you had a lovely time.

I've been busy undoing all my good work this weekend (albeit with plenty of exercise), but I've been enjoying it. Fasting tomorrow which should sort it all out. Full of steam-roasted chicken lunch right now, yum yum.

Convinced myself that this morning's weight increase is because of recovering muscles not crisps Grin.

Hope saf is ok.

postmanPatscat well done on reaching your running goal. Any idea what your reward is yet?

Emily Im fasting today, but somewhat reluctantly TBH.I stood on the scales before, thinking; If its a good result, then not fasting, if its bad then fast is on. In the dark days of winter I imagined fasting would be a doddle in the summer, but because we rarely have nice weather here (isn't that right ceebeegeebies Wink), I feel I should be making the most of it. And by making the most of I mean drinking white wine instead of red. And eating pizza al fresco. And icecream. Just got to keep going til teatime, then you feel as though your on the home stretch and I can have something nice tomorrow. Also been piggy but Aunt Frieda is visiting so always have to trough until she leaves. I was actually quite pleased to see her this month...

Emilythornesbff · 09/06/2013 14:52

ppc pessimism Grin based on consumption of chips and ice cream on NFDs.

betsy doubtless gain is related to muscle issues and completely unconnected with crisps, which are very thin and made almost exclusively from air.

I'm impressed with all this running.

Fasting tomorrow.

Emilythornesbff · 09/06/2013 14:54

Oh.
Accidentally skipped lunch today.
Must remember to feed the children Grin Wink

Definitely going to try fasting during travel to next hols.

skylerwhite · 09/06/2013 15:49

checking back in after holiday where I didn't fast once and ate three meals a day, in restaurants at least once a day. Weighing in was not a happy moment, as I've bounced up 4 lbs from where I was.

So today, I've been fasting, just 2 cups of tea so far. Also did a 40 minute run, and week 1 of Ripped in 30. V pleased with the run, as I haven't managed 40 minutes in about 9 months, think I managed about 4.5 miles.

For dinner, we will have roasted sweet peppers, stuffed with feta cheese, pesto, artichokes and pine nuts. Hoping to get back on the losing bandwagon over the next few weeks.

postmanpatscat · 09/06/2013 15:55

skyler 4lbs will be gone in no time...what matters is you had a good time! Well done on your run and workout too.

skylerwhite · 09/06/2013 16:02

Thanks postmanpatscat you are my secret inspiration on this woe, as I want to get to where you are

Talkinpeace · 09/06/2013 16:15

Peplum
delighted to hear that the fasting has helped with your PCOS
B&W
ta muchly for that link
I'll message her and let her know that it should help : she's not on MN to the best of my knowledge.

Well normally Sunday is one of my high calorie days but as DH has left for work and won't be home till tomorrow night and he and I rad RATHER too much wine last night I'm being mellow today instead.
Lots of playing in my veg garden.

Chocupid · 09/06/2013 16:34

Thanks melanie will hold off till I heal.
peplum I'm still a little swollen, but still strapped up so I haven't really seen them yet!
See surgeon Tuesday so hope for straps off then. Hmm

Cupcakexprincessx · 09/06/2013 18:02

Hi all!

Please help. Feel very annoyed at myself! Did very well all week, two great fast days and four normal healthy eating days.

However today I have gone way over my TDEE. Skipped breakfast which was fine, however I then had a Bbq cheeseburger, chips and coleslaw for lunch, followed by LOTS of Cake and chocolates! The cake and chocolate alone came to around 1800 calories...

Feel so guilty... Gone about 1500 over my Tdee. So annoyed.

Has anyone else had a huge blow out like this and still lost for that week?

So angry at myself, feel guilty like I used to when on calorie controlled diets. Plus due to eating all of that cake and chocolate I now cannot have a proper dinner and Im fasting tomorrow!

Please help! Advice anyone?

Thanks all, sorry to moan

mehefin · 09/06/2013 18:21

Cupcake It might be a good idea to have a small proper dinner tonight as fasting tomorrow will be harder if you finish today on a sugar fest !

That way you will be preparing for success tomorrow. 1 days indulgence won't make a huge difference in the scheme of things but you can learn from it

Cupcakexprincessx · 09/06/2013 18:33

Thanks Mehefin Just worried though as now, my calorie deficit for the week is only 1400! And if I have dinner that will be even lower? So Theres no hope at all I will even lose a lb this week? Isnt that how it works?

Thanks for advice though, having dinner will set me up for tomorrow.

somewherebecomingrain · 09/06/2013 18:34

skylerwhite? A breaking bad fan? I luuurve breaking bad. Sorry totally off topic.

I've gone mad on my nfds - certainly the first nfd after an fd. Two sainsburys profiterole deserts last night. It's as if, although my tummy is full, my body is still hungry, so I can't stop eating. Anyone else?

It doesn't seem to have done much harm. I've lost about 3lb in one week.

EagleRiderDirk · 09/06/2013 18:41

cupcake you could try throwing in another fast day next week to 'make up'. that's what I've done to allow myself a blow out on friday.

MelanieCheeks · 09/06/2013 19:05

skyler (yup, another Breaking Bad fan here!) those stuffed peppers sound delicious!

cupcake I'd just write it off as a cheat day/ spike day to keep your metabolism guessing, and make sure your fast days this week are excellent. The maths of calories in/out and pounds lost isn't that exact - if only it were!

Cupcakexprincessx · 09/06/2013 19:29

Thanks Eagle and Melanie

What are peoples weekly calorie deficit? and how much are people losing?

I know that the 3500 cals = 1lb is rubish. Its just that months of calorie controlled diets have made me believe if theres not that 3500 deficit theres no 1lb loss. So annoying trying to get out of old habbits and today I feel so quilty, like I used to!

Thanks

MelanieCheeks · 09/06/2013 19:38

Honestly? I don't bother calculating a weekly deficit. I do my 2 lots of 500 days, I try to keep around my rather low TDEE of 1400 cals on the other days, but I don't worry if I'm over, and I don't count my exercise calories.

I'm losing about half a pound a week. I discovered a biker friend of my husband's has been doing this since Christmas, and has lost over a stone since then. But it really does vary from one person to the next - we are all individuals!

akarucker · 09/06/2013 19:50

Not sure what to do. I've had a dreadful bout of tonsilitis (or something) and ear infections for two weeks. I tried and failed to fast. Just felt too rubbish. Tried and failed to eat healthily. Tried and failed to eat within TDEE. Before my illness it was half term and I had decided to take that week 'off' from IF, and the week before that I was on holiday so that all went pear shaped! So we're talking almost a month of being off track.

I know it sounds like excuses, and I can see that as I'm writing, but the honest truth is that the only thing that has felt good to eat has been mountains of ice cream, milkshakes, and food that 'melts' in the mouth - yes, that would be chocolate!

So, as a consequence, and I'm sure also because of the antibiotics (but that's only part of it), I'm a whopping 7lbs up! It took me AGES to lose that, and it's gone on so quickly and easily.

I still feel quite poorly and I know as long as I'm in pain I'm going to find it almost impossible to focus. Oh, I hate coming on here to whine and whinge, but I'm not sure whether I should just tell myself to suck it up and get back on track, or whether to tell myself to just not worry about it until I feel better. History shows that I am prone to these infections, and they tend to last a few weeks.

Don't most people lose weight when they're ill? Not me!!! Why can't salad make me feel better?

So give it to me - I can take it - should I shout at myself to stop consoling myself with calories, even though it genuinely makes me feel better, or do I give myself a break, and risk piling on even more weight! I'm afraid it's close to impossible for me to find a medium ground. It's one or the other, but as I'd only lost a stone, I've now put half of that back on. Yet I'm sitting here with a hot water bottle pressed to my ear to sooth the ear, and an ice cream bar to sooth the throat!!

I've missed out on commenting on so many great success stories over the last few days. Well done to everyone. I am reading, and haven't given up yet....

akarucker · 09/06/2013 19:50

OMG - so long....sorry!

skylerwhite · 09/06/2013 19:51

The stuffed peppers were v tasty even if the feta was a by gone off. I had a half one (DH had 3...) along with some baba ganoush leftover from yesterday.

Big breaking bad fan. Can't wait for the last instalment. is pretty cool (contains Season 4 spoiler, so beware).
