Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

frenchfancy: I guess I'll just have to be patient then! Anyway, I'm not really complaining.
BetsyBell: a high waisted bikini bottom might indeed be the option. And I also find I can't get over the fact that I now fit into the slim category which I really thought I had said goodbye to for good. I've not quite come to terms with it either or with the fact that I no longer have to walk around wearing what depressingly felt like potatoe sacks

SlightlyJaded · 10/05/2013 16:56

Ah good advice - thanks Postman

virginposter · 10/05/2013 17:07

Forkoff have only just caught up with the last few pages of this thread.
The other sugars I was talking about are the hidden ones in i.e. baked beans, bread, fruit, milk etc. but I was only omitting these because of my yeast intolerance.
As the others have said, if you want to keep your craving for sugar under control then go without the usual suspects (cake, choc etc etc) for a week or two and then the cravings usually subside.
It's good that you are information gathering before your start on Monday, try to read all the OP's if you can and try not to worry, this is really easy peasy Smile
I started this woe on a Monday too and so I weigh every Monday morning (Sunday is one of my fast days).
Good Luck.

virginposter · 10/05/2013 17:22

BetsyBell Despite my 29lbs loss I too still find it a big surprise when told that I'm slim.
I was cutting DH's hair last week and he reached forward to pick some hair from off my tummy. I looked down to see what he was doing and thought to myself "oh he's going to touch my fat bulging tummy" but I was surprised to see no fat tummy just flatness. I know I am a size 10 now and slim but it still surprises me. What's all that about?? Grin

Emilythornesbff · 10/05/2013 17:28

Just had my thin chicken broth. It's weird because although I would love a thickly buttered slice of warm crusty bread with it I am quite calm about the self denial.
I just hope I see some good results again soon.
betsy and vieenrose I am super keen to lose the wobbly ness of my tummy. I didn't get any stretch marks but was v big with both pregnancies and now the weight is going I have a wrinkly abdomen. Sad.at 42 I'm worried that's it for me and I'll be on "embarrassing bodies" next year.

BetsyBell · 10/05/2013 17:34

VP, Vie It's a nice problem to have though isn't it Grin Mind you, having never previously been a scales owner I didn't realise I was fat until I saw some photos so I guess it works both ways (I've lost about 45lbs from my peak weight - which occurred several years after having babies Blush)

emily The dodgy bits are only there because of the stretch marks in my case as I haven't got that problem anywhere else - so there is hope for you!

postmanpatscat · 10/05/2013 17:36

vieenrose slightly generous bikini bottoms work for me...no tummy stretch marks but definitely some post-baby loose skin that persists no matter how slim I am, e.g. I'm 8st 9 and it's still there (and DD1 is nearly 16 so it's not going to disappear now!) At 45 I'm almost the same age as you. Tops are easier being flat chested but I will try on a million bikini bottoms to find the ones the right shape to cover up the loose bit.

virgin it still surprises me too, and I only went up to a 12 before starting 5:2! Colleagues were asking me today how I've lost so much weight so there may be a few more converts soon.

BsshBossh · 10/05/2013 17:54

BetsyBell yes with you on the slight disbelief. I am amazed now that I don't have to wear clothes that hide my body, that my tops can skim above and not below my bottom, that I can wear clothes to flatter. Of course I could do all that when larger but I didn't have the confidence. Two of my friends are large and dress so well - no hiding for them, but for me... well I just didn't have their self-esteem over my body shape. Now I do. I still go straight to the size 18s in shops though and then remember Grin.

monster54 · 10/05/2013 18:07

Urrggghhh seemed to have bounced up from 11.3 to 11.4.5....grrrrr!!!

My first gain on this WOL...I did do 4:3 last week and that prob gave me a false low...might have to 4:3 it again this week and try and get of the gain and extra to shift :o(

I've been pretty good, and I don't over eat at all on NFD's....my stomach just can't handle it!

Nevermind there's always next week!

Talkinpeace · 10/05/2013 18:15

A couple of tips for those trying to lose weight

MFP / My Fitness Pal
Set it to only lose 1lb a week tops, then set your TDEE, then use the weekly reports to see how you are doing.
IGNORE daily figures as you are knocking it sideways with the fasts.
MFP is a temporary tool until you get the feel of your TDEE.

bouncing weight
mine fluctuates by up to 3lb during the week.
That is why I weigh myself once a week at exactly the same time in the same clothes.
All else is folly because it literally depends on when you last had a poo! TMI maybe, but reality.
If your once a week are not holding steady / dropping, THEN you need to go back to MFP and analyse why.

But now its gone 6pm on a Friday so Wine

ELR · 10/05/2013 18:19

Cheers talkin enjoy your wine I'm just about to have a G&T!
Have a great weekend everyone!

monster54 · 10/05/2013 18:25

Thanks TIP duly noted...but I do all those things already!!

I usually stay the same mid cycle, but showing this gain. I'm hoping its just hormonal and I'll see it disappear and some next Fri weigh in!!

Talkinpeace · 10/05/2013 18:33

monster
the post was general as well as at you : I think I've said roughly the same at least once on every one of the threads!
seriously though, the difference between full bladder and digestive tract and empty can be over 2kg !!

INeedThatForkOff · 10/05/2013 19:10

Thanks for the information. I'm feeling quite well prepared for Monday!

DeckSwabber · 10/05/2013 19:19

Ate loads yesterday (special occasion so cake, lunch out, takeaway for dinner, more cake, 1/2 bottle of wine) and am struggling with today's fast. Have resisted all temptation and only had tea so far. Roll on tomorrow!

applegate · 10/05/2013 20:28

So I haven't yet eaten today, second fast day of the week. I have got a banging headache, as I have at this sort of time on all of the days I have fasted since I started this a month ago. I have drunk plenty of fluid so its not that, I just wondered if anybody else got headaches on fast days?

bugsyburge · 10/05/2013 20:30

evening all,

I hope everyones days are going well, fast and non fast....

I've had quite a revelation today.... I've never been a big scales hopper as I'm a muscular build & have always been quite 'heavy' despite being a size 12.... for the past 5 Years I've bobbed between 11 & 11.3... I find it relatively easy to change shape but I struggle to get the scales to budge

this coupled with the fact that the scales at rhe gym have been missing for a couple of weeks means that I don't weigh often. I was amazed a fortnight ago that I was down to 10.7 & I was hoping for 10.4 today. WELL I had to do a double take... it was showing 9.12 Grin

sorry for babbling on but I was mega chuffed about this.... I've lost 19lbs in 9 weeks doing 4:3 with plenty of treats along the way

I'm a happy bunny tonight Grin Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 10/05/2013 20:30

applegate I often get headaches on fast days, but I plan them on days when I know i'll be busy with dcs and always assume its their constant noise that causes it Wink

Talkinpeace · 10/05/2013 20:38

YO Bugsy

BetsyBell · 10/05/2013 20:41

Cor bugsy! 9.12 is not heavy is anyone's book shirley! Amazing!

My eating's been awful this afternoon - that's what happens every time I get a new low scale reading! Celebration and self sabotage. Ah well Wine all round. Happy Friday everybody :)

bugsyburge · 10/05/2013 20:44

I know, I've never been in the 9s since I was about 17....although im ashamed to say that the scales them MADE me sabotage a good fast by forcing me into contemplating fish & chips....although I only managed half a portion so not a total disaster!!!

starting to think I won't look too bad in my bikini next week, Woop Woop

Talkinpeace · 10/05/2013 20:47

betsy
and please bugsy this is not "at" you
nobody under 5'4" should healthily weigh more than 9st anything.

We have become offensively inured to being overweight.
Many of us on the maintainers threads now regard BMI of 22 as an absolute upper limit : and if you look at picctures from the 50's 60's 70's
we are right.

I am delighted that 5:2 is giving more and more people a way out of "the diet trap" but please, aim for the stars ....

bugsyburge · 10/05/2013 20:50

I don't really understand....Blush

Talkinpeace · 10/05/2013 20:54

(((bugsy))))
sorry, I've been on these threads since number 1

breaking the diet binge cycle is a fantastic thing
but dieters neet to set their target high enough ....
if we can stop kowtowing to the food industry, the average BMI on this thread will head towards 21 ....
be part of that

bugsyburge · 10/05/2013 21:03

ah ok, I've just calculated my bmi & it comes out at 21.5 so that's good Smile
