Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Diet Thread number 19! Cup of tea? or three?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/05/2013 13:17

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

i'm not much of a believer in loads fruit for grown ups. it is a lot of sugar and naturally would be seasonal treats rather than be available year round. i'd have thought snacking on vegetables would be better than fruit but it tends not to be so convenient. if food magically appeared before me rather than having to be bought and prepared i'd choose some steamed asparagus with a smudge of real butter and black pepper over a piece of fruit any day.

when i win the lottery i will have a personal chef and food shopper Smile a personal trainer would probably help too! love it when they say ooh celebrity x back to pre pregnancy weight through this one simple trick - erm more like a dedicated staff preparing their food, looking after their child and giving them one on one work out sessions.

i have just eaten a camembert and ham wrap that was lush. i have camembert, haloumi and stilton in the fridge after grocery delivery - i am a sucker for get buy three get the cheapest one free offers on cheese.

Question: has anyone who has been doing this long term had a patch of a couple of weeks where they just couldn't/wouldn't fast? i'm curious. i'm hoping i will get back into it and i'm intrigued by the fact i haven't been piling weight back on and it's 'as if' my body needs this break. that could be me telling myself what i want to hear though iyswim? i've been doing this for over 3 months now and am wondering if this is a pattern anyone else has experienced or if it's just novelty worn off. also how do you get back into it?

sorry for long random post.

Hi all,I'm new to this thread and about to do my second fast day tomorrow. Found Mondays really hard - so tomorrow am going to try to spread the calories more evenly through the day (saved most of them till evening on Monday) I've planned 3 "meals" so will see how I go! I'm still overeating on NFD, but will work on that slowly.
I have previously lost 4 1/2 stone on weight watchers then just carrying on diet, but sadly have then gone on to put just over 2 stone of that back on Sad I'm hoping that once I get into this it will be a more sustainable WOL that will lead to more sustainable loss.
Looking forward to chatting more with you.Grin

I stop in school holidays : point of principle to relax when the kids are around.

EagleRiderDirk · 15/05/2013 20:09

saf hahaha - one of my male friends even pointed that out. He said if I were famous I'd look fantastic, I'd have the time to work out, the staff to control my food for me, etc. etc. My partner actually wants the same when we win the lottery. He's not trying hard enough imo Grin

BaconAndAvocado · 15/05/2013 20:14

Hello all, am new to this thread and it caught my eye as I know someone who swears by the 5:2 diet AND I seem to have tried most types of diets, some successfully some not.

The one thing I DON'T understand about the diet is how many calories I can eat on the non-fasting days???

Calculated my TDEE (?) using the link from OP, it came out with 1840 as the TDEE, surely that doesn't mean I can eat that much and still lose weight? (Please say yes Smile )

Emilythornesbff · 15/05/2013 20:15

saf Grin true about slebs. So true.

monster54 · 15/05/2013 20:19

I'm on a rest day on the squat challenge how is everyone else getting on?

NFD here for me. I held off till 1pm and had a big lunch out. I'm doing 4:3 this next couple of weeks.

Please take care with this WOL people...life is too precious remember to live every moment...you are loved fat or thin!!!

Talkinpeace · 15/05/2013 20:21

BaconandAvocado
Yes.

Miffytastic · 15/05/2013 20:22

Bacon apparently so

Unfortunately, I overestimated my TDEE and eating, and haven't lost anything for a few weeks! But thanks to some kind forum folk I have readjusted my cal intake and counting a bit more religiously on MFP.

I think when you've less to lose /cal expenditure is smaller, it's something to be more conscious of...

Miffytastic · 15/05/2013 20:25

ETA - I wasn't eating chips everynight, but I have pretty much plateaued (my weight loss is documented further up this thread) or slowed to a 1/4lb a weekloss which could be put down to actually my TDEE is less than I thought.

Northstarmum · 15/05/2013 20:32

mehefin completely agree. As soon as I lose motivation I think about all I have learned in my job about ageing and that soon gets me back on track.

BaconAndAvocado · 15/05/2013 20:34

Woohoo!!

Just been doing a bit of research on Amazon and , yes, I can consume 1800-2000 calls a day on an off day. (Think I'll opt for the 2000 Grin )

This diet sounds far too good to be true, apart from the fast days.......

Is there a central website with fast day meals ideas?

Northstarmum · 15/05/2013 20:40

bacon there is a recipie thread linked in the op
saf yes, I have had weeks where I have not been in the right head place to fast- often I would start out the day well but cave later. I'm taking the long term view for the long term health benefits. My weight loss is about 1lb a week if I fast properly (and less if I don't) and I expect that to slow as I approach target. I have been hoping to lose a couple of lb for my holiday next week and it just doesn't want to budge but I'm not worried, I'm in this for the long term and if its not right for a couple of weeks, that's just a couple of weeks of the rest of my life so it's not worth worrying about.

and follow the links in the OP : recipes, tips and hints etc as we've been posting on this board since August!

Southeastdweller · 15/05/2013 20:53

aka You're being unneccessarily down on yourself. Why do you think you should have lost more than 15lbs in 14 weeks?! It's a wonderful achievement. I hope you're not comparing yourself to anyone else because I don't think that's helpful at all, especially on WOL's or diets which are obviously quite subjective in terms of weight loss.

plecofjustice · 15/05/2013 21:07

Hi SAF

YES!! And getting back in was haaard, but just gotta get head down, fast done and then the routine clicks back into place (or at least it does for me) It became about raw willpower for me to get into a fasting routine again after I let myself have one week off, but it all clicked back into place once that first, hard fast was done...

akarucker · 15/05/2013 21:38

southeast it's not that I'm disappointed with my weight loss, in fact I'm thrilled because I really haven't felt at all deprived and that's never happened before! My point was more that by doing ADF for 14 weeks, and losing 15lbs, it really shows that I haven't got a hold on my eating yet because my NFDs I'm obviously eating too much. If I was more controlled on NFD, the weight loss would be greater with ADF, but it's suiting me the way it is. I'm loving it! Just sipping down the last of my Horlicks light (only ate 400 cals today, to allow for this), and looking forward to my breakfast of strawberries, banana, and bran flakes...yyuummmm!

Emilythornesbff · 15/05/2013 21:38

aka you've lost over a stone.
Fucking brilliant.

(scuse my language)

postmanpatscat · 15/05/2013 21:41

Welcome bobbly and bacon

No fast for me since Sunday, but I have been feeling weird since the early hours of Monday morning. Tummy upset and tender, burping loads more than usual, listless. Not necessarily any connection to fasting as others at work mentioned something similar. It is improving gradually, but it is irritating me as I've felt so well since starting 5:2 in February!

akarucker · 15/05/2013 21:53

emily Thanks Grin

GoodtoBetter · 15/05/2013 21:54

So, about to finish my third fast day and MFP (OMFG, I LOVE myfitnesspal...it's fabulous!) says I've had 515 cals, so v pleased. looking forward to food tomorrow...going to meal plan now Smile

EagleRiderDirk · 15/05/2013 21:56

Squat challenge day 2 complete. Had an extra rest day due to my rubbishness yesterday

ChesterDrawers · 15/05/2013 22:14

Can't tell you how much I am looking forward to breakfast tomorrow!

Also second weigh in so will report...

INeedThatForkOff · 15/05/2013 22:33

Well done GoodtoBetter and ChesterDrawers. Just starting mine now.

littlepeas · 15/05/2013 22:46

Hi everyone! Been doing 16:8 this week and have been finding it fine, but am now pondering whether to switch to 5:2. I quite fancy trying out a fast tomorrow - had my last meal of today and 5pm and would aim to eat my 500 cals at 5pm tomorrow. Am a bit scared! And have to drive lots tomorrow and am worried about getting lightheaded. What do you reckon? Just try it and see? Could get to midday with relatively few problems as Thursdays are very busy and I often miss breakfast anyway! Or should I stick to 16:8 for a couple of weeks (started Monday) and see how it goes before switching? Has anyone tried both?
