The 5:2 Diet Thread number 18! Breaking out the summer wardrobe?

GreenEggsAndNichts · 22/04/2013 10:51

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Had a great shopping day yesterday- managed to find a size 8 Hobbs polka dot dress which fits beautifully, and a part two aubergine leather blazer, also an 8. In charity shops for next to nothing. Think that's my target size. And I was told over the weekend by parents and other dancers how well I was looking- someone asked me if the Anna Sui tartan dress I was wearing had been made for me, it fitted so well. Looking forward to continuing fasting, for the foreseeable future

tiredemma · 05/05/2013 20:27

thanks for tips! I think I can cope with this!

Im going to fast on tues and thursdays because I go to running club on Mondays and Wednesdays

will let you know how I get on. Currently 10st 2lbs.

Wishihadabs · 05/05/2013 22:08

I had lost faith that I could ever be in the 50's again. 58 feels like a real achievement but sure I can get lower

GoodtoBetter · 05/05/2013 22:09

Can I join? I did this waaaaay back in September and lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks and then had some nastiness IRL and fell off the wagon. Am now heavier than I want to be and eating too much and snacking all over the shop. I'm going back on the 5:2 wagon from tomorrow.

Bramblesinafield · 05/05/2013 22:13

Everyone's welcome, it's a lovely supportive community.

I have been swishing round in my new smaller sized dress admiring the newly edging cheekbones!

MeNeedShoes · 05/05/2013 22:14

Quick wave and hello. Bloody Bank Holiday is sabotaging my fast day and it's generally a busy week with lots of eating out - so doing a mini fast from lunch today till lunch tomorrow, followed by a fast day on Wed. Won't be as good as doing a full fast but it's something :) Good luck fellow fasters, virtual cheers for those losing and virtual hugs for anyone despondent!

Bramblesinafield · 05/05/2013 22:15

Wow Melanie, bargainous!

Sunshine, I totally get you. We've had a cinema trip with a bit of snacking and I feel enormous! The carbs certainly are noticeable when I have them now.

Tiredemma, you can do this!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/05/2013 22:28

Super busy weekend here. Fasted on Thursday, would normally be fasting again on Monday but I'm unsure now because of the holiday. It might be another Tues/Thurs week again.

It's great to see so many new names here. :)

Morning all :)

Don't think it's fast-related wakefulness but I have been wide awake before 6am the last two days! More likely to be because DP is away and there's no one to snuggle up to.

Anyway, the good news is.....drum roll......I've reached my goal weight Grin Lost the remaining 200g this morning to take me to 55.3kg (8st 10). Hooray!

Hope you all have an enjoyable bank holiday Monday :)

swallowedAfly · 06/05/2013 06:47

morning all Smile

well i'm still 10.13 this morning which is good i guess - haven't bounced up into the 11's yet but i'd rather i'd stuck at 10.11. haven't decided whether to fast today or to try and do tuesday and thursday. bank holiday is throwing things a bit.

anyone fasting today?

Emilythornesbff · 06/05/2013 07:16

melanie that's fab.
I'm on a fast day today. I don't calorie count on NFDs and I do have treats but I find I don't binge and I think I'm making some naturally healthy choices. In part I think it's because the fasting has thwarted by fear of hunger. Well, we shall see. Weigh day tomorrow.
Good luck to fellow fasters today.

akarucker · 06/05/2013 07:21

postman WELL DONE! So happy for you. Smile

MelanieCheeks · 06/05/2013 07:31

PPC well done, great achievement!

I'm off for the bank hol, and heading down town to see some street theatre with DH, so I'll have Tues-Thurs as fast days this week.

DeckSwabber · 06/05/2013 07:34

Well I had a food- and sleep-fest yesterday. Had to get up early to spend the day with family. Lots of driving and also a lot of walking. Cafe lunch which involved garlic bread. Well, that was it. Got home craving garlic and butter! However, family commented that I look really well, so my first NSV.

Ate loads than crashed at about 8.30 and slept until 6.30 - finally catching up on a lot of bad nights sleep.

Have decided NOT to weight myself today! Fasting tomorrow and Friday.

Tortoiseontheeggshell · 06/05/2013 07:42

Well done PPC. Emily, how old is your baby? A friend was asking if I thought she could do this while breastfeeding and I thought of you.

Fast day here, my time zone is ahead so its 4pm. I've had a milky coffee that my kind secretary made, skim milk though, and a miso soup and that's all. Planning a seafood, bok choy & seaweed soup for dinner. Just have to get past the kid feeding hour without eating. Tricky when DD2 likes popping food into my mouth!

Dotty342kids · 06/05/2013 08:09

postmanpat that is excellent news - well done!
saf not fasting today as usual no, and my scales say the same as yours! Hoping it stays that way until fast day tomorrow when I can undo the damage from yesterday / today. Had a heap of crisps with hummus followed by a hefty amount of dairy milk last night - not had an evening like that for ages but not going to worry too much about it Smile
Enjoy the sunny bank holiday follks and for anyone who's fasting as usual - I am in awe of you!!

GoodtoBetter · 06/05/2013 08:36

So, first fast day today. From what I remember from doing this before the first one is the worst. I've decided to do it on a Monday as i have a busy day at work so hoping that will keep me occupied.

Emilythornesbff · 06/05/2013 09:04

Ooh, well done PPC that's really good news.

tortoise babythorne is 3 months old. I'm ebf. I read that dr M doesn't recommend fasting for breastfeeding women. But I only do 5:2, not 4:3. And I always take my vitamins (especially the advised vitamin D).
Baby is thriving.

Emilythornesbff · 06/05/2013 09:07

I felt confident about ebf and IF because in the book breastfeeding isn't listed as one of the circumstances in which you shouldn't fast. But on the webchat he said he was conservative and wouldn't recommend it. Then I felt a bit bad. I have continued but no more 36 hour fasts.

mttum · 06/05/2013 09:58

A happy bank holiday to all. Fast day for me, I am really looking forward to it; is that a bit weird? Had three NFDs on the run, and seemed to be obsessed with food on all of them, which I am not when fasting. Does anyone else get this? Also, on Saturday night I had Indian snacks, home made curry, pudding, etc, not too excessive but over TDEE, and woke up in a foul mood yesterday which lasted well into the afternoon. I have put it down to eating rubbish, but again wonder whether anyone else has experienced it.

Well done to all "losers", good luck to all tasters, and for those of you on NFDS this bank holiday - enjoy!!

GoodtoBetter · 06/05/2013 10:29

hunger starting to rumble now....

mttum · 06/05/2013 10:41

Fasters not tasters - Freudian slip!

LexingtonBear · 06/05/2013 10:46

What a gorgeous day! Lying in the park watching DP and the kids in the playground and wondering if its lunchtime yet! Packed the picnic at 7am (thanks, kids, for waking us at 6 asking if it was summer yet) and have been drooling over it ever since. Have fasted since 12pm yesterday as I knew I'd never manage the usual Monday fast on a bank holiday. Am surprised, though, at how out of kilter I feel without my usual Monday full fast. Hats off to those who are managing to do so! Enjoy the gorgeous day, everyone.

Doilooklikeatourist · 06/05/2013 10:47

First week done and ( drum roll please !) 4 lb off .
Even better I'm in the 11s for the first time in about 5 years !
I'm doing the fast again tomorrow , and Thursday .
On my food days I try and eat sensibly , on the lines of the F plan diet ( picked up an old copy in the free book place )
Very very pleased with myself .Smile

Emilythornesbff · 06/05/2013 11:01

Hungry.
But enjoying the feeling of not having to eat in a way.
And I know the hunger will pass, I can eat chicken to morrow and (oh please please) I am getting slimmer.
Lentil broth for supper.
Nice work doilooklikeatourist
