The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Just remembered, I also lost 2 kilos in the first week I went gluten free, and felt so much better as well!

sausages51 · 09/04/2013 22:48

Because I have had such positive feedback,I feel it only fair to say: I just quietly, repeatedly, calmly, just kept fasting 2 days per week....usually a Monday & Thursday, and it miraculously worked. And most importantly, throughout, on normal days have eaten just about anything. And drank it! Its stunning.

headintheclouds · 09/04/2013 22:51

dotty the weight didn't fall off ,unfortunately it fell on!Smile I was down to 10 7.5lbs the day I travelled South to my Mums for Easter. I had lots of nice meals out, wine ,chocolate .etc... Mum had no scales thank God ! So I didn't dare weigh myself till this morning after a good fast yesterday..
Hopefully it won't take too long before I'm back to 10 7.5. Then I'll be ready to tackle the next half stone to take me down to glimpse 9 st something! Enjoy your wine/ nibbles with your friend

IDismyname · 09/04/2013 23:11

Sausages - I'm going to remember your words and maybe stick them up in the kitchen where I can read them...

"Just quietly, repeatedly and calmly keep fasting 2 days a week..."

It will work!

Thank you Smile

charliegreentea · 09/04/2013 23:14

Hi everyone. Well I was going great guns leading up to an event where I had a new LBD to wear (down 10 pounds in 8 wks) but since then have been unable to get motivated to start again and must admit to indulging in far too much chocolate at Easter! Now I'm too scared to step on the scales! We are away this weekend so I have resolved to start afresh next week! The good thing is that I'm not feel guilt ridden and like I've failed. On the contrary, I'm looking forward to getting back on the straight and narrow next week :)

LexingtonBear · 10/04/2013 07:31

Hello everyone from a long time lurker and very occasional poster. So happy today - scales have gone from 14 something (ouch) in Jan to 12 something (admittedly something quite high) today. 1.7 more to go, but yay - feeling so happy, think I'll have an impromptu extra fast to celebrate!

akarucker · 10/04/2013 07:52

I'm still not clear on something. From a fasting health benefit point of view, is tea with milk considered breaking your fast? If it's a case of the body having to work to digest calories, then there are calories in milk. I only wonder because my aim is to go long periods before breaking my fast, to reap the health benefits, so I'm not sure if I am or not.

ellenbrody · 10/04/2013 08:03

nettnett Thank you Thanks

swallowedAfly · 10/04/2013 08:10

yes technically anything with cals is breaking the fast. i've switched to black coffee after a lifetime of white and now couldn't drink white - it tastes funny.

stunningly good scales result today - 10.11.4. it is now exactly ten weeks and i've lost 17lbs. now that's a false result probably as i'm likely to do some bouncing but i'm really pleased with it. especially given the stalling times i've had. anyone who is stalling it really doesn't mean you're stuck - just keep going.

i'm also coming to the conclusion that it's the fasts that feel hard that really do good which may be motivation to keep going on the days where i struggle as the struggle may indicate this is going to be a good one Confused

swallowedAfly · 10/04/2013 08:13

also i think mixing it up works - re: i had a week where i only managed one fast and was eating more due to easter, didn't really gain from that but the following week when i got back on it i'm losing much better.

though tbh i guess having gotten my period is the main driver here. the 2 weeks before my period are really hard to lose anything.

Itsaboatjack · 10/04/2013 08:21

Well done saf that's brilliant. I've also had a new low today, 0.5lb down from last week at 11st 5.6. That brings me to 19lbs in 11 weeks.

I'm on an eating day today and going out for lunch with some friends so I'll have to watch I don't over indulge and spoil it.

I've been reading some of the links on the hints and tips thread, there's a lot of info out there it's a lot to take in, but yes aka I agree with what saf said, for maximum health benefits on your fast it should be calorie free drinks only. One I'm reading at the moment also suggests to help improve insulin sensitivity even more to combine fasting with a low GL diet so I'm going to try that for a while and see what it's like.

Dotty342kids · 10/04/2013 08:24

Yay swallowedafly!!
headintheclouds oops, sorry for mistake. Still, great losses overall though.
poshvoice I definitely don't eat the same every fast day. For me, weirdly, thinking about and preparing a nice 500cal evening meal helps to get me through it. As soon as I'm in the kitchen and prepping for dinner I know that food is on its way and I can get through that last couple of hours much more easily. I enjoy hunting through my old Good Food magazines for nice recipes that fall under 500 cals and trying them out. I'm gradually building a recipe bank of them so that if I am feeling uninspired one week, I can go back to ones I know are easy to make and taste good.
Monday night this week was roasted new potatoes, cherry tomatoes and asparagus with a salmon fillet on top (with tiny coating of pesto). Really quick and easy to make (it all goes in one tray) and was 490 cals.

aroomofherown · 10/04/2013 08:33

Oh I think I've been doing it wrong because I've had a cup of tea (with milk) during my fast days. What I don't understand is if it ok to have a small breakfast on a fast day, can't you have a cup of tea instead?

Dotty342kids · 10/04/2013 08:48

aroomofherown because there are calories in the milk so your body will have to digest those (albeit it a very small amount) and the whole idea of the fasting aspect of this, for the health benefits, is that your body gets a long break from the usual digesting / growth cycle and goes into what's known as "repair" mode. The sooner in your fast you give your body calories, the shorter the fasting period actually is. Not a huge problem if you're just after the weight loss side of things (though technically that just becomes a calorie restricting diet) but not what you want to be doing if you're after the health benefits of fasting.

Dotty342kids · 10/04/2013 08:50

Sorry, posted too soon! Same applies to breakfast. Some people, including Dr Moseley do do a small breakfast and then a dinner so they have two shorter fasting periods eg. 7pm Monday to 7am Tuesday broken by a small breakfast and then nothing again till tea at 7pm Tuesday.
Not sure how that works given that everything else says to try to go for at least 16hrs......... sorry! Thought I could answer your question but I don't seem to have - hope someone with more understanding of the sciency bits comes along soon Grin

BetsyVanBell · 10/04/2013 08:54

aroom I almost always have a cup of tea with milk on fast day mornings - and then often a coffee with milk... Yes, your body will be doing a bit of work digesting it but not compared to eating a breakfast. If not having milk in tea would be a deal breaker to doing the fasting then that's worse isn't it?! I count the milk calories in my daily allowance but I don't count it as breaking my fast. What a lot of people here are trying to do is go as long as possible without eating so yes it's ok to have breakfast but it shortens your fast time. There's lots of evidence that points to a longer fast having more benefits for your body to repair itself (and fat burning!).

SaF I don't think you'll be seeing that 12 again :D (and if you do, ignore it and it'll go away).

BetsyVanBell · 10/04/2013 08:57

dotty No I never remember the sciency bits either! I do feel a whole lot more virtuous when I do manage without the milk (i just have a teeny tiny splash!) but the cold weather is thwarting that at the moment... looking forward to doing this in summer, if we get one.

swallowedAfly · 10/04/2013 09:09

i bloody hope i won't be seeing 12 Shock i think you mean 11 Smile

basically the pure starting point of this wol is the total fast - nothing but water at all. then they say well that's unbearable for most so what if they have a small amount of cals (500) - do we still see benefits? yes we do and it's far more attainable and sustainable.

so it's like a sliding scale. peak health benefits are from fasting - with between 12 and 24hrs being where the really good bits happen apparently. but the nearer to that you can do the better and as they've shown there are still health benefits with small amounts of cals being taken in. DrM couldn't bear starting a working day on an empty stomach so he has a small breakfast and small tea. others of us find if we eat breakfast we want to eat all day so a) not having it helps us and b) we're getting more health benefits allegedly.

however you do it is good - as you go forward you may want to aim for more - but if not then fine.

for me i cut the milk partly because of the cals issue on fast days and partly because i actually drink a lot of coffee every day and adding up all those milk cals on fast days made me realise that actually it was a lot of pointless cals being added onto my day everyday and meant every day i was pouring in dairy which isn't really a human need. blah blah sorry! but i'm really glad i drink black coffee now and have permanently gotten rid of a source of cals that was part of my daily life and hasn't been replaced iwth anything.

BetsyVanBell · 10/04/2013 09:12

Swallowed Blush

swallowedAfly · 10/04/2013 09:20

i did start at 12 though bvb and i really hope never to see it again Grin

sweetkitty · 10/04/2013 09:25

Second fast day for me today, woke up quite hungry this morning too.

I always have a cup of tea with milk in it in the morning and half a spoonful of sugar Blush I'm not religious with the 500 cals thing either, if I went to 600 I wouldn't be too bothered. Going to try and make it to 5pm today or at least 4pm and have a slim a soup if I'm really hungry.

Got my 55 squats to do as well Grin

I have definitely lost 2lbs as I weighed myself twice yesterday and this morning and it's still off. But let's see what a week brings.

If only it would come off these big chunky thighs.

monster54 · 10/04/2013 09:45

Second fast for me today....

Although my tummy is still in a bad way from the weekend :o(

Urrrgggghhhh!!! Just a herbal tea so far this morning. Its funny with this WOL I've noticed changes in my clothes first before I see the numbers move on the scales....I seriously need some new bras!!! Poor deflated bee stings are getting lost!! Ha ha!

BetsyVanBell · 10/04/2013 10:09

sweetkitty I have those thighs too and it is coming off now - took a couple of months though! Now tackling the waist too small for trousers that fit thighs issue though. Love having a tiny waist again Grin

greenfig · 10/04/2013 10:10

First time post fast day that I have lost ...NOTHING!!! Shock
Anybody else had that happen? I'm not at a low either Confused
sweetkitty I am desperately trying to sort out the chunky thighs! I do popilates on you tube. It's a killer, I would link if I knew how!
Well done saf your perseverance has paid off Smile
Right I'm off to do a Jillian, feeling very wibbly wobbly jelly buttocked Grin

BetsyVanBell · 10/04/2013 10:12

Something would have to go seriously wrong to see 12 again swallowed! I spent so long waiting to see 10 that I'm really shocked to realise I might see 9 sometime in the not too distant future... Shock
