The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Good luck with the biopsy Ellen. Dh is coeliac and I often eat the same as him. There are lots of yummy treats out there and I think the cakes I make with the doves farm gf flour are lighter and preferable to leaded flour.

headintheclouds · 09/04/2013 19:37

Well back on the wagon called fast yesterday and today my weight is 10 st 9lbs ( damage of 1 and a half lbs back on with the Easter week) so not as bad as it could have been. I had a great fast yesterday of 20 hours and then soup at 3 pm followed by Laskas delicious curry for dinner !
Headed for the 9 stoners club now...

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:37

brambles where do you buy the flour from? there is a lady up the road who is coeliac and relies on prescription bread. i wanted to make her a loaf in my breadmaker to see if it was any nicer - the prescription stuff is pretty vile apparently.

aroomofherown · 09/04/2013 19:41

Good advice, thanks sAf. If this works its going to be very easy.

I buy the Dove gluten free flour from Sainsburies.

peplum41 · 09/04/2013 19:41

incywincy
you've got your own post

Well done on the fasts, sounds good, some dont lose at first , then lose lose a whole chunk. Might depend how munchy you were in the preceding weeks as your body catches up with the deficit, plus if you've more to lose you tend to shift more initially. Check out your TDEE, green eggs has provided a link to that in the opening post, that gives you an idea how many calories to have on your non fast days. Its up to you how strict you are about that, sometimes you feel like being good , sometimes you dont. Its flexible, so fits round most of lifes little surprises quite nicely. Enjoy, and keep up with the threads if you can, its a bit baffling at first, but soon you will be an expert and hopefully feel like helping another Confused new faster .

peplum41 · 09/04/2013 19:48

Oh saf was looking at my pasty and hairy legs today and thinking Im not ready to get those out when the sun does show its face. Not got any bath oil, yeah good idea.

Dotty342kids · 09/04/2013 19:50

headintheclouds, when did that weight fall off? That's great and good that nothing went too wrong over the Easter period too. Yup, you'll be in the 9 zone soon enough Smile

BetsyVanBell · 09/04/2013 19:51

Ellen good luck with the biopsy and yes, like others have said, focus on what you can eat. There's loads of choices for gluten free out there now so you can still have your cake and eat it - if you use Dove's Farm flour! (Who btw, have the best ever brownie recipe - I've been making their recipe ever since I went gluten-free 15 Shock or so years ago!)

BsshBossh · 09/04/2013 19:59

ellen good luck!

saf over a stone in less than 10 weeks is amazing. I know you've been struggling to get over the "bounce" but keep it all in perspective - you've achieved so much on this WOE.

aroomofherown so long as you keep up the gym then 2500 sounds fine (I ate close to that last year and I'm a few inches shorter than you and I still lost) but I think you'll find you'll eat less on weekdays (eg 2000) and make up for it on social (weekend) days. The key thing is that the only calorie deficit you need is provided by the two 500 cal fast days.

ellenbrody · 09/04/2013 20:00

Thanks Betsy, I may ask you for that recipe sometime!!

Chipstick10 · 09/04/2013 20:36

I can't remember where I read this, it was a newspaper but I can't remember which, and it was online, but it was saying that the 5.2 is not good for women as it causes diabetes but that it's been proved in studies that its good for men.
Is this just some sort of cynical ploy by manufacturers of breakfast cereals or something to get women to eat breakfast?
I am doing so good on this woe I'm scared they will find in years to come that it's very dangerous or somehting

Bramblesinafield · 09/04/2013 20:39

We buy the doves gf flour from sainsbos. I imagine tesco's do it too. Sometimes you need a bit more of the gf flour in a recipe as it seems finer. Y can get gf pastry in the freezer section, but I often use mashed or sliced potatoes as a topping for savory pies.

ELR · 09/04/2013 20:48

Hi everyone just read through all the posts, thinking ooh I will say this and that and now can't remember who said what!!
But well done to all the losers and maintainers especially since we are in the middle of the Easter break and the weather is truly pants!!
Hello and welcome to all new fasters just remember on fast days to drink plenty and keep in mind you can have whatever your belly desires tomorrow!
I have maintained after yesterday's fast and have over eaten today by about 200calories.
I have had another near miss on a migraine which started early last night, luckily it did not develop into a full on migraine but have had a bad headache and felt a bit sick all day and its my tom too.
Was supposed to take the kids to the cinema at the O2 and out for lunch but as I felt so rough we stayed in watched tv and ate popcorn, maltesers and mint aero bubbles!!

Whoever asked about take aways and fatty foods affecting the way we feel, well it has def affected me. I don't really eat take aways but went for a curry and a few weeks ago and felt ill the next day and the same thing happened when i recently had some kfc and now any more than a small glass of wine and I get an upset stomach. Have had two bouts of throwing up in last three weeks which is unusual for me!

ellen sorry to hear about the coeliac disease but as others have said focus on what you can eat. Mrs Crimbles coconut macaroons for one!!

Sorry epic post!!

HugAndRoll · 09/04/2013 20:56

Fast day today. I am hungry and I think I need to reassess what I eat on a fast day to be more full.

BetsyVanBell · 09/04/2013 21:01

Chipstick I just googled "fasting diabetes women" to find that article - it's in that well known scientific journal the Express, and there were no links to any sort of scientific data, just opinion. I would say that there is far better evidence to be found on these threads tbh...

PoshVoice · 09/04/2013 21:02

First fast day of the week for me today and all is good. Just had my main meal and aiming to break my fast tomorrow midday.

Was just wondering, does anyone else here just have the same things to eat each fast day or do you vary?

Fast days for me are always :

One coffee with semi skimmed milk and one teaspoon of sugar in the morning
A boiled egg for lunch (with a bit of salt, pepper and chilli)
Supper : Either steamed salmon and broccoli with a bit of lemon on tuesdays or a portobello mushroom and halumi burger with spicy salsa on Thursdays

Anyone else as boring as me on their fast days?

BetsyVanBell · 09/04/2013 21:09

PV I vary. However, I might have to pinch the mushroom and halloumi idea, oooh that looks good (it's a fast day, I'm hungry again!)

ellen brownie recipe beware though, it might not need cooking that long, depending on your oven - made a very disappointing batch the other day. Next time I reckon 25mins tops.

PoshVoice · 09/04/2013 21:12

BVB : feel free, recipie is on the recipies thread.

akarucker · 09/04/2013 21:18

PV mine is even more boring, but I like it that way. I hate to go near the kitchen on fast days: teas all day, a tub of fresh soup for late lunch, bowl of baked beans with chili flakes for dinner. Boring, filling, easy, done! Ready to eat breakfast in the morning...

ellenbrody · 09/04/2013 21:23

Oh yum, that mushroom and halloumi burger idea sounds fab!!!
Betsy thank you for the recipe, may have to try it, you know, purely for research Grin

Paintingrainbowskies · 09/04/2013 21:50

I am on a fast day today, another fairly easy one.

To begin with I tried different patters and food and now I pretty much stick to the same things on my 2 fast days.

I have a costa Americano mid morning, a cup of bouillon stock at lunchtime and then a big vegetable and lentil curry of some sort to make up to 500 cals and I drink lots of water.

I really like a big dinner before bed so it suits me to have just a veg and lentil curry and to try and save as many cals till late evening. I also like curry because it is strong flavour and doesn't need any added accompaniments!

aroomofherown · 09/04/2013 22:05

Thanks BssBosh. I have 3 stone to lose and I'd like to lose it by October, so it sounds possible Smile

WipsGlitter · 09/04/2013 22:08

Second attempt, first day. Went well.

WW yoghurt, salad and boiled eggs for lunch. Soup for dinner. Don't feel too hungry.

Nettnett · 09/04/2013 22:10

Ellen
I'm coeliac as well, and as everyone is saying, concentrate on what you CAN eat, rather than what you can't, there's no need to feel deprived, I promise.
Supermarket gluten free bread is vile, try to find a bakery that makes it fresh, or make your own, not hard I swear, (no proving needed with gluten free), tastes fine, 1 hour from go to woah. Kims Gluten Free bread recipe on the web (I don't know how to do the link) Blush
And always remember, there's no gluten in wine or chocolate!

PoshVoice · 09/04/2013 22:12

Good to know I'm not the only boring one! Thanks
