The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all

SAF bloody great result, feel euphoric for you. I also seem to stick at certain weights then for no apparent reason a few pounds drop off!

Ha ha monster think I also need some new bras, hubby offered me a pair of socks the other morning and not to put on my feet Blush

An almost milestone for me yesterday 10st 7.4lb (so very close to 10 st 7lb) but that was after a fast and predictably bounced up to 10st 8lb this morning. However I have glimpsed it which means that 10st could be achievable sometime in the 'summer' Wink.

greenfig yes that also happened to me once in the beginning but I think it was due to 'waste storage'. The scales did move a day or so later.

sweetkitty · 10/04/2013 10:38

Oh yes I also have the gaping waist trousers but squeezing the thighs into them. I look odd can you imagine a skinny-ish wee body with no boobs Hmm then these things that jut out, I look like I'm wearing you know those odd aviator WW2 trousers well them Grin

I did go on dressipi fantastic site for anyone who doesn't know about it, you type in your measurements and sizes etc and they tell you what to wear, from there I bought this lovely 50s style prom dress which really flatters my shape, fitted at the boobs and waist but flares out to hide chunky thighs. Just wish I could find jeans that did the same Grin

Iwearblack · 10/04/2013 10:51

Yeah saf well done! I have touched under 11 on 'unofficial' weighin days but I only record on each Tuesday and annoyingly was 11.0 again yesterday - that's 4 weeks now! Still - it is within my grasp!!

Twinmama32 · 10/04/2013 10:53

Hi
Can I join you? I've been lurking awhile... I started 5:2 at the beginning of feb after devouring (excuse pun!) dr m's book in an afternoon. Quite honestly I can say I've not looked back. I've got pcos which in the past has dictated my weight. 3 years ago I managed to lose 2.5 stone to get down to a healthy bmi, I then fell pregnant with twins 6 months later which was amazing and terrifying! I actually lost weight through my pregnancy due to a very stressful period so when I had the babies I weighed less than before! However I then proceeded to put my baby weight on after they arrived and ended up at 14.7 stone...talk about doing it backwards!!
At Christmas last year I felt like I'd never be able to lose the weight and was contemplating diet pills when late jan I had an epiphany in the shape of dr M and also a 24hr bug which saw me lose 6Ibs , suddenly I was motivated!

I've been on mn reading all the posts and I'm so inspired, I just wanted to share my weight loss to help motivate other newbies. I'm 5'7" and at the start I weighed 14 stone 1Ib, 8 weeks in I've lost a 15Ibs. My goal is to lose another 2-2.5 stone by september.
I've pretty much been doing 5:2 but sometimes throw in an extra fast if I've been a bit naughty!

Best of luck to everyone, I am so excited about what's to come and I wish everyone the same success I've had so far. Smile

plecofjustice · 10/04/2013 11:11

Need to have a grumble!!

OK, so yesterday was an eat day, but on my weekday eat days, I keep to TDEE-20% (1590cals in my case) to allow me some weekend leeway.

How did I manage to "spend" 213 cals on a grapefruit and a punnet of blueberries??!! NO wonder I'm hungry today (fast day) as had to cut out some dinner to keep below target.

Grrr fruit!

monster54 · 10/04/2013 11:17

It's only 11:15am and STRUGGLING!!!!

Just feel so tired today!!!

greenfig · 10/04/2013 11:51

I feel for you monster I struggled on Monday & had to do Tues instead which went relatively easily Confused
Can you keep going? Look at it as almost lunch time perhaps. I know lots on here find eating a snack 'breaks the seal' as it were, but I can never manage to go right through. I have a late lunch, after school snack then early supper. One late large meal & I was v wobbly & grumpy!

plecofjustice · 10/04/2013 11:59

Hey Monster, feeling it with you. I'm fasting today, got my celery ready for 12:30..... I've never managed to make it all the way through and still be clear-headed enough to function at work, so I modify to suit myself.

I've planned my dinner for tonight, and my breakfast for tomorrow to cheer myself up.

We'll get there! What was it Sausages said upthread? "quietly, repeatedly and calmly keep fasting"

monster54 · 10/04/2013 12:03

Thanks greenfig....

I am going to hold on till 1pm and then head out from work for a fresh soup. Or I might grab 2 one for lunch and one for dinner....

I know there are a couple for the 250cal mark and then that'll be me done for the day!!!

Breadandwine · 10/04/2013 12:08

To break up the morning, when the day seems to stretch ahead, do some exercise:

Do some star jumps
Put a dance CD on and dance around your kitchen
Do a 20 sec HIT exercise - up and down on the first step of your stairs - see how many you can do in that time and then try and break your record
Stand on one leg, a la Dr M in the Horizon prog - no matter where you are in your 5:2 WOL, it'll set a bench mark for the future.
I can do 30 secs plus on each leg (been IFing for a long time) - if I can do it, there's no reason why you can't!

You'll feel a lot better after any of these exercises - and suddenly, the day is brighter! Smile

Promise! Grin

monster54 · 10/04/2013 12:08

Thanks poj it's not even hunger today I just feel really tired and headachy!

I know I know....water water....I've had a few herbal teas this morning but will fill my water bottle up!!!

greenfig · 10/04/2013 12:17

You can do it!

Treacleq · 10/04/2013 12:20

Thanks for the support saf and Peplum, had a bit of a breakthrough this morning thankfully!

For those that didn't see my first post (and who can keep up?!) I weighed 15 st at Xmas - a real shock to me. I'm 5.10, 30 yo and was 13 st in April last year! I was so depressed and felt forced to act - I tried another diet and failed miserably putting on 8 lbs in January!

I have now lost those 8 lbs! Been doing 5:2 for 5 weeks so far and lost about 6 lbs in the first week and then nothing for the last three weeks and now the rest has gone too! I'm hoping to keep going right down to 12 stone.. I will keep going!

Thanks for all the posts and support on here - I really couldn't do it without this! Flowers

plecofjustice · 10/04/2013 12:29

Hi treacleq

You sound pretty similar to me, I'm a similar height and managed to gain 2 stone in the course of a year 18 months ago due to comfort eating. I've been fasting since September, and am now down to 12.8ish and still losing. Like you, I want to get to 12, and I'm so excited that it's in sight now!!

Chipstick10 · 10/04/2013 13:28

Apart from weight loss has anyone found any improvements in medical conditions, or extra health benefits?

plecofjustice · 10/04/2013 14:09

Hi Chipstick,

My IBS has improved significantly, and it's now very unusual for me to get the big D, whereas before I started fasting it was happening most days. Maybe my body has learnt it needs to hold on to all the food it can get when I'm feeding it!

Look through the previous threads too, a few people have seen biochemical markers improving too.

ELR · 10/04/2013 14:16

hi everyone, such nice weather today sitting in the park catching up on posts!
greenfig...... I maintained this week post fast and then this morning have gained 1/4 of a pound!! So not happy but also not unhappy as had lots of popcorn yedterdsy!!

BsshBossh · 10/04/2013 14:20

greenfig I've maintained after weighing in post-fasts for the last 2 weeks. I've been on this road a long while now so am quite calm about it. Slow and steady wins the race for me.

mehefin · 10/04/2013 14:21

Hi Twinmama32

Your weight loss is very similar to mine and same height. I was 12st 10 nearly 2 weeks ago (a monthly weigher here)after starting late Jan at 13st 13

Glad it is going so well .

I have a friend doing her first fast today she said everywhere she goes she meets people following this WOE so she's joined in

greenfig · 10/04/2013 14:46

Thanks silverbeetle Bsh & ELR Smile
I've had a much reduced appetite today so perhaps things are getting back in the groove post Easter. Enjoyed this ams exercise & got loads done today which feels great. Good luck to todays fasters, you're nearly there! Who's fasting tomorrow?

postmanpatscat · 10/04/2013 15:34

greenfig I've had fasts with no loss or only 100g (though thankfully I haven't yet managed to fast AND get heavier!)

chipstick since I started 5:2 almost 7 weeks ago I have cleared my acne and improved my digestion no end. I had a few tummy upsets in the first couple of weeks but everything is stable now. I'm so much less hungry too, though I also think I have had so much more practice at going 'wait til later before you eat' that it's easier than it ever used to be! Losing 14lbs is a bonus too :)

Up at 5.30am today to go to the passport office, needed something I wasn't aware of and get to go back tomorrow, nice....at least it's good for my step count!

postmanpatscat · 10/04/2013 15:34

Oops almost forgot... yippee for saf !!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 10/04/2013 15:43

Hello. I've been lurking and researching so wanted to join in.

I am on my 2nd fast day. To see if I can do it, I fasted one day last week and one day this week. It has gone well, so I'll be upping to 2 days from next week.
After 2 children I am horribly overweight and have tried so many diets but can't cope with having to calorie count and menu plan, especially with 2 dc under 5. I am an 'all or nothing' sort of person. I'd rather have nothing that try to work out what will keep calories low every day. I also like the health benefits but primarily want to lose weight.

On my fast days I have had a cup of tea with milk, a plum and banana for lunch and a homemade broth of carrots, celery, cabbage, leeks and celeriac simmered in water. I have also had a cup of bovril. I don't know if that's under 500 cals but I'm pretty sure it is.

I saw the comments about not having milk in tea first thing but at the moment I couldn't do that.

One question, is it normal to have a splitting headache when you start to fast? On both days I've had a terrible headache down the left hand side, almost like toothache.

swallowedAfly · 10/04/2013 15:49

greenfig i had it last week and was gutted - but this week i've dropped loads (not that it will necessarily stay there but ykwim) so don't despair.

been out with my work group and done our visit and filming and had lunch at prezzo - did the two course lunch menu but left half my starter and some of my main too so didn't go overboard. did have a beer though and am now home and having another. but hey what would be the benefit of this wol if you were 'dieting' every day???

thanks for congrats. bit scared of what tomorrow will hold! ime so far though once a weight has been seen it'll be banked and beaten soon enough.

did sunday and tuesday this week so not sure if i'll fit another in or not. will see how i go. whatever happens it's back to work proper on monday and i will fast then.

silverbeetle · 10/04/2013 16:17

Hi MrsArchchancellor

I'd say your fast menu was well under 500 cals. I often make my own vege soup and add a vege stock cube and black pepper to liven it up a bit. I used to be a real tea monster - couldn't get out of bed before a cup with milk and never touched coffee. That's now all changed and I mostly drink weak black coffee instead of tea on fast days (unless it's herbal) and it does the trick, so might be worth giving it a go.
I also suffered from afternoon headaches during the first few fasts, I think it's to do with your body not being able to get energy from sugars in your blood and having to use stored fat instead which is much harder work. I also used to get a horrible taste in my mouth. My advice is to try and drink lots of water as this does help and eventually the body seems to get used to the fasting and the headaches stop.

Good luck for next week.
