The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi everyone, I'm new, been lurking for a bit. Am trying my first morning-night fast today (as opposed to 2pm to 2pm) and I've already eaten all of my 500 calories. Oops.

Here's hoping I can make it through to bed time.

peplum41 · 09/04/2013 17:50

dotty hey its an eating day, they cant all be virtuous or we wouldnt all be raving about how we love this wol and the threads would've died months ago. Just curious, but did you have a swim or just your daughter? Swimming burns quite few cals, plus tones, so could you swim too, then not feel so guilty?

systemsaddict tried to log weight on the site you linked but not sure how to record weight, do you put todays weight on the space next to the date then press update? Confused

postmanpatscat have you been doing this for only 6 weeks?? I thought you were more of a long termer with your fancy 36 hour fasts! Im still aiming for a 24 hour, currently eeking it out to around 22 hours.

Did my first proper 500 fast yesterday as have usually gone a little over or even up to 800. I always feel soo hungry at bed time but was determined to not cave this time. Started reading in bed and fell asleep sat up. When I woke up I didnt feel hungry, and had a good kip. Must be getting used to it as endured some sleepless nights initially. Then this morning decided to minifast until 1pm, then held out til 3:30! Had a bowl of some spicy brown lentil dahl I made the other day, delish Smile

peplum41 · 09/04/2013 17:53

Hi aroomofherown keep going it does get easier honest

Dotty342kids · 09/04/2013 18:00

peplum thanks for kind words. Yes, I could probably have had a swim too, would definitely have been better than sitting scoffing rubbish but she's recently turned 8 so can finally go in the water without me so took advantage of the time to sit and read a book (and eat junk!).

sausages51 · 09/04/2013 18:08

Last post march 10th-been lurking ever since but can finally pounce out and announce that I have, as of this morning lost 1 whole stone since January. This wol is truly amazing. Never give up anyone :-)

Talkinpeace · 09/04/2013 18:24

WELL DONE sausages

and yes, as somebody who has been fasting since last September : you all will eat MUCH less of high fat food than you used to because your digestive feedback loops are getting into a healthy state.

on take aways I always suggest set menus as they are more balanced and work out better value

postmanpatscat · 09/04/2013 18:25

peplum yes, just over 6 weeks (started in Feb half term). I always have lunch if I'm fasting at work, but find at home I can keep putting off the next meal until suddenly it's breakfast time. I did go to sleep dreaming of breakfast, I admit!

BetsyVanBell · 09/04/2013 18:38

sausages Woohoo! Brilliant, well done! Grin

Had my meal and feeling all warm and satisfied now. Yum yum yum, lovely happy tummy. I don't think I'll ever manage a 36 hour stint like postmanpatscat!

aroomofherown · 09/04/2013 18:46

Thanks peplum.

sausages that's great news!

akarucker · 09/04/2013 18:55

sausages well done! A stone is my first goal so you've spurred me on (I'm at -11lbs)

Evening all had a lovely eat day today, had toast with butter, a salad sandwich, quorn cologne & garlic bread and 2 cakes probably about 1700 cals which is over my TDEE but oh well it's the holidays, fast day tomorrow Grin

ellenbrody · 09/04/2013 19:15

cometalktome thank you for your kindness, I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself! Yes, I will have to eat differently after the biopsy- no bread, pasta, biscuits or cakes! All the yummy stuff! At least a whole category of binge food is now forbidden! Can't see myself bingeing on lettuce!Grin

peplum to combat bedtime munchies on fast days I tend to have a long bath, then an early night!

sausages, marvellous loss! Well done, you must be so pleased.

aroomofherown · 09/04/2013 19:16

Can I ask a question? My TDEE has come up at 2514, I think because I put in that I go to the gym 3 - 4 times a week (which I do, now anyway).

This seems very high to me. My BMR is 1600.

Can I really eat 2500 calories on a feed day?!

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:20

suck it and see insey Smile sounds like a good plan to me so long as you don't massively overeat on a daily basis. i don't calorie count on non-fast days either and have lost over a stone in less than 10 weeks. i know if i've had piggy days and need to make up for them a bit by another when i'm not very hungry eating less. it tends to balance for me.

think the calorie counting comes in if you're failing to lose any weight and are worried you may be consitently over eating.

made it through today so far so hopefully on track to bank today as a fast day.

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:22

how much do you weigh and how tall are you aroomof? hard to say without having a clue of your body.

aroomofherown · 09/04/2013 19:23

I'm 5'7" (175cm) tall and weigh 88kg Blush

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:24

personally i don't think eating exercise cals is a good idea if you're trying to actually lose weight or what's the point of the exercise? it delays learning to eat reasonable amounts and counteracts the good effects the exercise could be having on your weight Confused

it only really makes sense to me if you're at goal weight and want to maintain.

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:25

don't blush! we're all here from having extra weight we want to tackle Smile

how about splitting the difference between bmr and tdee but more towards the tdee than the bmr for now? say 2200?

peplum41 · 09/04/2013 19:28

AAAhdotty was attempting an excercise DVD when I suddenly got all paranoid you'd think I was being patronising about the swimming, but fortunately you took it the way I meant. Enjoy your nibbles and wine with a mate, what other woe would let you do that? Smile

ellen thanks will try that, rarely bathe as like showers, but got some radox, tealights and chilled music...mmm yeah. Hope your test is ok, but if not focus on the stuff you can still have, like Wine cheese crisps chocolate and a whole bunch of healthy stuff. Sure you will get used to the gf stuff soon enough.

Sausages way to go! Keep pouncing

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:32

peplum after doing this with ds the other day (both suffering winter dry skin) i'd recommend a good oily bath rather than the radox. killer to clean the bath after but worth it. don't know about anyone else but my skin is absolutely dying for some sun now and to get out from under layers of clothes.

aroomofherown · 09/04/2013 19:32

Thanks sAf. I was going to aim for 1500 because that's what I thought I was supposed to do, so 2200 seems likes a veritable feast! I might keep it at 2000, that seems easily manageable.

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:34

well aim for 2000 a few days a week and a couple of fast days and then you won't have to feel bad or worry if you have a day or two of splurging. it's all in the balance really rather than a daily calorie intake.

swallowedAfly · 09/04/2013 19:35

i'm 5'6.5 and fractionally under 11stone and 1500 cals is about what my body needs if i don't move at all in a day - like literally laying in my bed. way too little!!!!
