The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well good news here!! A new all time low for me after a successful fast yesterday.

2lbs this week which seems a lot for this WOL but I only lost 0.5 last week so some catch up in there I think!!! Sooooo now I'm mega excited for 2 reasons, at 11st 5.5lbs I am 0.5lbs off being a 'normal' BMI.....and now for some reason that ellusive 10 seems totally achieveable and now it feels like it really might happen!!!

Have a great weekend everyone I had a weekend full of socialising and going to try my best not to let it ruin my hardwork!!!!

postmanpatscat · 19/04/2013 07:31

Great results! For me, the 36 hour no-food fast is the most effective and I'm planning on doing one in four fasts like that until I reach goal (which is very close).

akarucker · 19/04/2013 07:33

Bssh so inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 08:07

well done bssh - really pleased for you and everyone reporting losses.

i'm 11.0.4 this morning - back to 11. meh. not overly surprised as i had pasta and a mini pizza last night and some salted peanuts. i have no work today so i guess it would be a good day for me to do a total fast as not too physically demanding. i ate late last night so going without till tomorrow morning would be feasible physically it's just the head that's the problem.

postmanpatscat · 19/04/2013 08:11

Go on saf, you can do it!

Surprise bonus of another 100g loss for me this morning after yesterday's 600g loss...I suspect the arrival of TOTM may have something to do with it, and/or last night's 5 mile run!

applegate · 19/04/2013 08:23

well having done a few fasts over a couple of weeks I had lost 4lb and was really pleased, weighed myself this morning and it was all back on, feel so frustrated!
I have been eating well in between fasts with not too may treats but have just finished a few night shifts so maybe my body is a bit out of sorts.
Oh well back to it today with a fast day and maybe it will just teach me to weigh myself weekly rather than sneaking on the scales daily!

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 08:26

i've just had a trawl through my old posts and i'm amazed i've kept this up as it seems i've constantly been sticking for ages and bouncing back up again. i lost half a stone in the first two weeks then got stuck for two weeks and so on and on. so whilst yes, i've lost just over a stone, i lost half of that in two weeks and the rest of it has been clawed off over the next 9 weeks Grin bloody hell. oh well, glad i've kept it up.

postman i'm lacking confidence i can do it but i wish i could. i need to commit really or obviously i won't manage it.

bugsyburge · 19/04/2013 08:56

saf why don't you just see how you go? I tend to find if I tell myself I have to do something I end up feeling too much pressure & crumble whereas if I relax my own rules and say to myself that I may fast but no biggy if I dont make it, that 9 times out of 10 I end up fasting

Breadandwine · 19/04/2013 09:03

This question was asked on the 5:2 forum:

Have just noticed a vegetarian 5:2 recipe book by someone called Belinda Price. Has anyone read it? Is it worth getting?

Anyone come across it?

Congrats to all losers this morning - apple it will come off again, promise!

saf - good message there for those plateauing!

monster54 · 19/04/2013 09:43

saf I think you should try and cut your weigh ins down, then you won't see the bounces up and just the general downward trend....

Which weight do you record as your offical? I can't wait to get to that stone marker!!! You've done amazing!!! Keeps us measly 8lbders something to aim for!!

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 09:49

monster if i did that it would be worse for me personally as i'd maybe weigh in on the day that my body was crazily showing 4lbs up from nowhere and i wouldn't know that that was just a bounce because i'd think oh god i must have been steadily gaining weight all week.

i prefer to watch it and know what's going on. wednesday is generally my official weigh in i guess but i don't think of myself as having an official weight - i think of myself as being in a weight band itms. that's the way it's been for me - that i am in a range and trying to move down out of that range. then there's a new range i'm in etc.

IDismyname · 19/04/2013 09:49

WOW BsshBossh! OMG!!

I've just worked that out in 'my' currency and you've lost over 4 stone!!

Well Done - you're an inspiration!

monster54 · 19/04/2013 09:56

Totally understand....I find seeing the bounces soooooo demotivating. I just have one weight after my second fast of the week!!

I find the bounces affect my mood and then as always my eating blush blush!!!! In a bad way!! I pig out!!!

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 10:10

whereas mine get me in check monster Smile we're all different crazy in our attitudes to this stuff.

ELR · 19/04/2013 10:33

Hi all, some good losses this week bsss that's a super loss well done.
I've weighed in this morning after yesterday's fast and lost another 1 lb so that's 1lb and3/4 this week the most I've last for ages as have maintained for last 2 weeks.
saf if you ate late last night and also had salted peanuts you will prob be holding onto a lot of water and still have dinner in your system, have a good fast today an get ready for a good weekend.
Quite hungry this morning already had musili, two slices of seeded toast and a cuppa for breakfast and then cup of tea, banana, two almonds and 5 pistachios for a snack!
Off into London now to meat hubby for lunch , Soho Joe's for pizza yum!

BsshBossh · 19/04/2013 11:19

saf it's the late night sodium thing again I think. Could you make the nights a no- or low- salty things zone?

BsshBossh · 19/04/2013 11:20

...mini pizza, salted peanuts, did the pasta sauce hae cheese and/or a sauce with bacon or salt in it?

AngryFeet · 19/04/2013 11:31

Good day yesterday. My giant chicken stirfry kept me full all day and I didn't even manage to finish it at dinner time. It was pretty crunchy and I think I just got bored of chewing! Grin

Eating day today. Had 2 scrambled eggs and toast earlier and I am eating out tonight so will have a small lunch. Can't wait to weigh myself on Monday. If I haven't lost anything I will be surprised.

postmanpatscat · 19/04/2013 12:18

saf it takes confidence but I think mostly it's about self-belief. When I got on the treadmill last night I was planning to do interval training, then before I knew it I decided to do one more km, then another, and another, until I worked out that I had enough time in the 60 mins allowed to run 8km (5 miles) if I didn't stop. So, that's what I did!

Now that I've run 8km at 9km/h, I know I can do 10km at that speed so that's my goal for this weekend. I believe I can do it. When I'm fasting and the hours are ticking by, I think about what I want more - the weight loss or the food. When I'm running, I count down the metres I've run and those left to do and it motivates me. The same works for fasting!

We're all different, I know, but maybe my determination will inspire someone!

ELR good for you!

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 12:49

yes very inspiring for many i'm sure postman - whereas for me i confess i think blimey why would you want to run 5 miles on a treadmill Blush Grin sorry Grin it baffles me - full of admiration yet utterly baffled. wish i had the desire to do that.

postmanpatscat · 19/04/2013 13:02

I will be thinking the same if I see any of the marathon coverage this weekend...26 miles? Just get the blooming train!!

applegate · 19/04/2013 13:24

thanks postman, I think that's a really good way to look at 'whether you want the food or weight loss more'.
On a fast day today and was wondering whether to have lunch or try and go longer and those words made me decide to make it to at least 24hrs and hopefully longer.
Thanks for giving me a bit of focus!

swallowedAfly · 19/04/2013 13:27

i am having a proper tummy rumbling day for some reason. haven't eaten anything and not close to cracking but man i've got sound noise going on.

yes 26miles is a very long way. i wouldn't mind walking it but would probably stop off for a pub lunch on the way Grin

greenfig · 19/04/2013 15:38

bssh what you say re appetite/interest struck a chord with me. I am so used to making food a pleasure it seems slightly odd on a post fast day to eat to live rather than live to eat like S&S said. I guess that probably is how skinnies feel. & well done you on your 1lb to target Grin
My official weigh in was 9.5 1/2 today so much happier that it's going again. however, today has not been too good! Have been out cooking & selling bacon rolls (amongst other things) Was an early start so I took yoghurt with me for b'fast as that was what I fancied but couldn't resist a bacon roll once they were cooking. Ate another mis ordered one later so that it didn't go to waste, wtf!!!!! Then had a cheeses salad roll for lunch. All this & bread makes me feel ill, but I do love it. Have a great w/e everyone.

peplum41 · 19/04/2013 15:54

Hey bsshbossh well done.Grin Are you American, thinking in pounds rather than kg or good old stones? Did you start 5:2 in early feb because you'd not heard of it before then? I first became aware of it about then, I think the book came out about that time, so the publicity brought it to my attention. Really, I wish Id heard of it earlier, although glad I found these threads, they've helped more than the book, which is good, but the the threads add a dimension that keeps me interested.

bread&wine has your stomach recovered from the onslaught of being shrunk to the size of a walnut then force fed a bucket of whatever you found tempting when you finished fasting? Wink just off to read the link

Glad Im not fasting today because the water board are digging up the road a few doors down and the water coming out the taps is brown and murky. I dont even want to do the washing up with it.
