The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

if you've had a tummy bug, scrap it and eat REALLY healthily - lots of veg and salad to help your system and restart next week

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 20:21

agree with TIP - scrap it for this week and take care of yourself.

i'm lost this week. a fast day, a very low cal day (good fast then ate over the 500), a tdee day and whatever today turns into - probably about tdee or under by bedtime. don't think i can be bothered to make tomorrow a fast day tbh - maybe just another under tdee day.

will do better next week.

Twinmama32 · 18/04/2013 21:21

Thanks [Tip] and [saf] I think I'll take your advice and start again next week Smile

Bramblesinafield · 18/04/2013 21:30

Hello 5:2 ers, hope its all going well. Back to earth after a holiday and hectic work week. And ... I haven't lost weight, but I haven't gained either. That's great! It seems to be what you are all saying, in that I'm not as hungry now or just can't eat as much - also am more aware of wanting to eat rather than just out of habit.

Southeastdweller · 18/04/2013 21:30

bread Well done on your 48 hour fast.

Happy birthday for tomorrow dotty

I also have a reduced appetite and I'm less interested in food. I bought a six pack of creme eggs two weeks ago and there's still three in the fridge. I'll make my way to them but I'm in no rush. A colleague's bringing in doughnuts tomorrow and though I'm looking forward to having one, I'm not excited about the prospect, IYSWIM?

This WOL has been surprising in several ways.

AliceinSlumberland · 18/04/2013 21:32

Well think I've done okay, fasted for about 18 hours and had 550 calories today so a little bit over but letting myself off as its the first go. Looking forward to my breakfast tomorrow!

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 21:39

Interesting thread on the 5:2 forum on doing a 4 consecutive day fast as originally done by Dr M (Horizon doc & his book) and encouraged by the research doctors.

I'm coming to the end of my 26th fast and have lost about a stone! I couldn't bear to write down my original weight so have to guess now! I've been doing this since mid Jan and I;ve got about another half stone to go - feeling a bit bloated now cos I'm on my period though! How quickly/slowly have you taken to lose weight? I am a bit greedy on my days off though definitely overall am cutting down and eating more mindfully! I love fruit and vegetables so that's a plus but I'm vegetarian and love eating nuts. I've found eating beans or porridge v effective at leaving me feeling fuller.

Chipstick10 · 18/04/2013 22:11

Hello ladies.
Can I just ask for a quick opinion. I weighed myself three weeks into my first fast, I was 9 stone 11 . Have not weighed myself since but today 14 wks on I did and weighed in at 9 stone 2. I'm shocked at how little I've lost. Is this normal or should I be loosing more? I don't exercise apart from walking the dog but I am definitely eating half of what I used to eat on feed days.

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 22:13

Just over a stone on 5:2 for me too ayshigirl - started it last week of January.

Talkinpeace · 18/04/2013 22:14

what is your bmi and tdee ... as in how much have you got to lose and what calorie deficit are you actually pulling each week ....

Chipstick10 · 18/04/2013 22:23

I don't know my bmi I don't count calories on feed days but am totally, eating less than I did. I have lost a whole back size in a bra since starting this, from 34 to 32 . And gone from medium to small in gap shirts. I have deliberately not weighed myself because I don't want to become obsessive.

Talkinpeace · 18/04/2013 22:28

chipstick
I do not own a set of scales - so weigh myself once a week at the gym. It is useful to know what your stats are for the TDEE if nothing else
but speaking as a 34, unless you are very short you may not have much more to lose...
i reached my target in december and am now maintaining

Chipstick10 · 18/04/2013 22:45

My dh doesn't think I have much to lose. As I started at aprox 9stone12 I would like to get down to 8stone 12. I hope this is achievable. It's just that I read posts on here with people loosing tremendous amounts of weight much quicker than I see to be losing. You may be right though Talkinpeacei may have met my target

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 23:15

people losing tremendous amounts generally have tremendous amounts to lose and have done that by eating a fairly tremendous amount of calories so that when start fasting they create massive calorie deficits and have lots of fat to burn. less you have to lose, less surplus cals you've been eating, less fat there is to burn and less expenditure your body uses just to tick over etc.

like bssh i've lost just over a stone. i started on the last day of january.

ayshigirl · 18/04/2013 23:31

well done bssbosh

Chipstick10 · 18/04/2013 23:41

Well done all of those who have lost a stone. I live in hope.

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 23:59

Well it looks like I've succeeded on my first 36 hour fast (no calories). Am off to bed now yet still not physically hungry. Normal eating resumes tomorrow until my usual 500 cal fast on Monday.

Breadandwine · 19/04/2013 00:40

Thanks for that link, Bssh! I wish I'd seen it before I began my latest fast - I certainly would have planned a much better meal to break it!

I said after that fast that I probably wouldn't try it again. After reading that thread, I may well consider it again in a month or two.

As is said on that forum, fasting has been around a long time - and if you look around the net, a 2 day fast is absolutely miniscule - 21 day, even 40 day fasts are not uncommon. I doubt my reporting on my fast has encouraged anyone with an eating disorder.

Breadandwine · 19/04/2013 00:43

Bssh I didn't see your last post - congratulations! Feels good, doesn't it!

BsshBossh · 19/04/2013 06:09

Breadandwine yes, wasn't it an interesting read. I'd completely forgotten about Dr M's original 4 day fast and the recommendation to do it (albeit under supervision) every 3 or 4 months.

Well it's the morning and my 36 hour zero calorie fast was a success and I'm still not hungry. But for the very first time on this fasting regime my sleep was awful - was too hyper to settle and have since woken at 5am raring to go, which is fine but as my family is still asleep (and I want my DD to stay asleep until 7am Grin) I can't do much more than read and surf the net quietly. Actually that isn't a bad thing.

postmanpatscat · 19/04/2013 06:47

Well done bssh - glad i inspired you! Did you hop on the scales today?

BsshBossh · 19/04/2013 06:55

Will do in a few minutes postman. Waiting for my DD to wake up - I hide the scales in her room so I am not tempted to weigh in too much. I was a lb lighter yesterday monring after a eating day so fingers crossed that lb is still off. I'm only 3-4 lbs away from goal so it's coming off very very slowly now. Which is fine (I was 210 lbs Feb 2012 and am now 149 lbs!).

BsshBossh · 19/04/2013 07:20

Prawntoast · 19/04/2013 07:30

Bssh, that's brilliant progress.

Read that thread on the 4 day fast, just not sure I could manage that. Have gone 24 hours but don't think I could manage much longer. I might try 36 hrs next Monday and see how far I get, envisage myself getting up at 2am for toast!
Have managed to lose a whole pound this week, biggest weekly loss I have had for about 6 weeks so quite pleased.
