The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

postmanpatscat you are one of my fasting heroes. Fantastic effort and results! Well done on the 36 hour zero calorie fast too. I'm trying that again today and must see it through, especially as another of my fasting heroes Breadandwine has completed 48 hours. Flowers to you both.

saf I bet that weight gain was due to the sodium content of your crisps and peanuts. If you're gonna eat junk at least make it chocolate Grin.

I had a sneaky weigh-in today (ahead of tomorrow's official one) and was 1lb down after 3 weeks the same, so 3lbs to goal. I'm really hoping I can still record a loss tomorrow morning cause I only record official weigh-ins.

BetsyVanBell · 18/04/2013 12:57

Peplum thanks for the correction - credit where credit's due to happygolucky for the excellent tip. I've been struck with something awful so am off food and stuck in bed. Trying to keeps self hydrated but every swallow is like knives. BVB is miserable (but still sugar free and fasting in a way).

Dotty342kids · 18/04/2013 13:14

Well I'm pretty much writing this week off now. Did a fast Monday, all fine. Ate my own bodyweight in chocs and cake on Tuesday Sad. Fast planned for yesterday, was fine till teatime and then had a good healthy dinner of around 500 cals. Then attacked the Rich Tea biscuits and chocolate buttons Sad.
Today I'm not fasting but I'm not treating it as a TDEE day either - about to have an egg salad bagel and will be having a small bowl of spicy tomato pasta for dinner.
Scales still not moved at all. Birthday tomorrow and from tomorrow lunchtime I will be eating and drinking pretty much through to Monday night! (Away at nice hotel with friends and then out with different friends for curry Monday night).
Once all that's over, normal life and proper fast days will resume. Even though scales not moved I'm still feeling good, still like the (assumed) health benefits and aim to continue long term Smile

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 13:19

Dotty have a lovely birthday weekend. Enjoy it and don't think about calories and fasting and "dieting" at all! See you on the other side :)

AliceinSlumberland · 18/04/2013 13:51

Well first fast is going well at the minute, can't believe it's quarter to two and I've not eaten anything, yet I'm not keeling over! Been keeping myself busy, went up to asda to get a gift for a friends birthday and another friends new baby and been sorting out photos to take up time! Got some uni work to do which will be harder I think because I use food as a distraction from the work!!

Planning to have a jacket potato with beans and a sprinkling of cheese tonight for just over 300 cals, and either some fruit or weetabix about fourish, and have a mini milk for after so should be under 500 cals!

Have to say it feels good in a weird way to be able to eat so little but for me personally I won't be doing extended fasts as its the ability to have 'normal' eating days that I like about this diet and I'd struggle to eat enough on the left over days to keep my body fuelled.

Just spotted ice buns on the cupboard but I know I can have one tomorrow!!!

SaltyandSweet · 18/04/2013 14:10

Anyone else having appetite issues on non-fast days? I just don't seem to be hungry and I can't seem to think of anything I want to eat (unheard of for me). I've made myself eat today but have not wanted to, iyswim. Hoping someone else has experienced this and will tell me it'll get better! (Yes I want to lose weight but I love food and having such an ambivalent attitude on a day when I can more or less eat what I want is not my ideal!)

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 14:13

Salty yes my appetite has definitely reduced (though not all non-fast days - I still enjoy my blowout weekends when we're out or entertaining). I find myself eating unsalted nuts, bits of cooked chicken, ice cream with sprinkles to bump my calories up on days when I've undereaten too much.

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 14:17

Salty forgot to add. I no longer eat "low fat" or "0%" or "diet" anything. It's full fat all the way for me now - in order to keep my calories up but without feeling over-stuffed.

SaltyandSweet · 18/04/2013 14:19

Thanks Bssh nice to know it's not just me! There seems to be nothing I can think of that I want to eat and that's just weird for me ... everything I have so far eaten has been just because I know I need to eat something, no anticipation, no particular enjoyment. It's just very strange.

SaltyandSweet · 18/04/2013 14:24

Bssh I've relaxed on the low fat stuff too since starting this woe, with the exception of still using skim milk only because I've used it for so many years I don't like the taste of fuller fat milk.

greenfig · 18/04/2013 14:55

Happy b'day dotty have a wonderful w/e Smile
S&S I have felt like that on post fast days & to begin with felt quite cheated as I was so looking forward to a guilt free meal, then had no desire for it Confused I'm sure I posted about it too. I now think what I really want rather than what I'd planned iyswim. I still seem to eat less than tdee on a post fast day but the interest is def there! Hope that makes sense!
Well done bssh soon be maintaining!

SaltyandSweet · 18/04/2013 15:03

Interest not here today for some reason greenfig Sad Scouring the recipe sites in an effort to spark some interest since my tried and true "favourites" aren't appealing. I'm normally so greedy that it takes effort to be mindful of what I eat on non fast days so today has really thrown me. I've experienced reduced appetite before but this is the first time where that's combined with a general disinterest in food.

monster54 · 18/04/2013 16:19

I just want to say I am having a fierce fast day today!! Wooooo!!!!

Nothing but water since 10pm last night! Just need to hold it together when I get in doors with DC!!! Wish me luck!!!

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 16:22

Salty I just accept that there will be (many) days now where you'll not be interested in food per se (as in the past) but will still need to eat. Alot of my slimmer Grin friends have never been as interested in food as me and eat to live. Perhaps some of that mentality is creeping in for you (and that's fine). You'll certainly have days when you are more interested. Perhaps this is the adjustment for you. Just remember to eat enough each day as you don't want your metabolism to declinealong with your interest.

BsshBossh · 18/04/2013 16:23

Not *I just accept

Just accept

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 16:33

have a wonderful birthday dotty Smile don't worry about the weight business just enjoy.

no risk of annorexia here and whilst this packaged version of fasting may be new fasting itself isn't and has been around forever. fasting beyond 48hrs is when drawbacks start to come into play - anything up to that does no harm whatsoever but as is always clearly stated this isn't a woe recommended for people with eating disorders.

today was not a fast day so i treated myself to a latte earlier and a cup of tea with milk. came home and poured myself a glass of wine and just now realised other than the milk in those drinks i haven't actually eaten anything. i fancy pasta tonight (which makes me realise i haven't had it in ages which is surprising for me). going to make a lovely big bowl of pasta pesto with added cheese and garlic and sit and watch this weeks doctor who with ds and a glass of wine. work is done for the week and i don't feel too bothered about weight stuff - having one of those days where i can celebrate the weight i have lost rather than obsess about the weight still to lose Smile

maybe take that as a reminder everyone to look and see how far you've come

SaltyandSweet · 18/04/2013 16:49

Bssh That makes alot of sense. Maybe it's some kind of realisation that I can now take or leave food (whereas before I'd definitely be take, take, take Grin) I have resolved to not worry about it. I mentioned it to a friend in RL and she looked at me like this Hmm and said that since I was trying to lose weight I shouldn't look this lack-of-appetite gifthorse in the mouth Grin That and what Bssh and greenfig said have helped me realise not to be so silly and use it as an opportunity to eat healthier options than I may have chosen previously. 10 to 1 I regain my appetite with a ferocity on Saturday Grin

peplum41 · 18/04/2013 17:12

Hi all,
salty yes you're probably right that you will regain your appetite with a vengeance at some point, its weird not knowing what to do with yourself when foods not the centre of your life.

saf I had a similar epiphany this morning when I stood on the scales and they still said 12 :0, and I thought a few weeks ago I'd have been thrilled with that number. Time to bask in the glory of what's been achieved.

Dotty, enjoy the rest of your thirties. Life begins and all that.

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 17:23

quite pleased with myself that my dinner ended up being a bit healthier than planned - instead of slathering cheese all over a huge plate of pasta i stirfried some chicken and veg and had that on top of a smaller portion of pasta. that means there's still pasta in the pan and i may have it later with a bit of cheese but that's fine. at least i got some fibre in.

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 17:23

peplum - exactly. do need to stand and enjoy the view sometimes rather than just focussing up ahead.

akarucker · 18/04/2013 17:59

Kept my new low this morning! I know it's the cutting out of sweet treats. Because I do ADF I never count cals on eating days. When I really thought about it (well, saf made me think about it), I guessed that I was at about 2000 cals in proper food, but then added on another 750-1000 cals in sweet treats. Weight loss was slow & steady but with ADF should have been much faster. So, day four of no sweets and the new low has stayed, and I tracked my cals on MFP to find that yes, I was eating exactly at my TDEE, before the crap added on. So, logic tells me, cut the crap, eat the food, can probably now move to 4:3 (or v soon anyway), and things should tick along nicely.

Dotty342kids · 18/04/2013 18:08

Thanks for birthday wishes everyone. Much appreciated! See you all back here on Monday Smile

postmanpatscat · 18/04/2013 19:01

happy 40th dotty! Wishing you many more happy, healthy years ahead (still five years to go til you're middle aged like me!)

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 19:04

i am really pleased for you aka Smile haven't had any sweets, biscuits, cereal or anything 'sweet' for 4 days now though i have had alcohol. 2 glasses of white wine have been much enjoyed tonight. haven't really missed the chocolate and such which is reassuring - i seem to have broken my addiction through giving up the ice cream and chocolate binges when i first started this woe.

must try and stay away from the salty snacks tonight though.

Twinmama32 · 18/04/2013 19:57

Can anyone help please I'm confused as to when my next fast should be...my tdee is 1800 but I've had an odd week so far
Mon 1600
Tues. 500 fast day
Wed 1000 (due to tummy bug)
Thurs 1000 (due to tummy bug)

So my original plan was to fast tomorrow (Friday) but would this be most effective as I've had four days under my tdee? should I scrap it and wait for Sunday, I can't do it sat as I'm eating out in the evening?

I'm in a muddle! Confused
