The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi, i just discovered this thread yesterday. Very exciting to read so many real life results. This is my first ever post so please be gentle! I have been doing 5:2 for a few weeks and have lost 4 pounds. Just wondered if anybody knows the efficacy of doing the diet lunchtime to lunchtime. MM mentions it in the book as working but common sense would make me think it can't be as effective as the fast is shorter with just one sleep. Has anyone here tried it over a period of time? Did you lose weight?

postmanpatscat · 18/04/2013 06:30

mcmary, most of us do after dinner until breakfast two days later eg around 36 hours in which only 500 calories are eaten. If noon - noon works best for you them do that but it will possibly slow your weight loss down.

As hoped, new low for me today ... since starting 5:2 eight weeks ago today I have gone from 10 something all the way through the nines and am now 8 something for the first time in 3 years. 15lbs gone Grin

Good luck to all the Thursday fasters. I am really looking forward to my breakfast this morning!

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 06:40

morning.

i ended up caving and eating some crisps and peanuts after a fantastic fast yesterday. it still would have been under 1000cals total though so bit disappointed to find i'm back up to 10.13.2 today Confused that's virtually back up to where i was before mondays fast let alone yesterdays fast turned into very low cal day. ho hum. not sure what the plan is. could go ahead and fast today i guess then i'd have had 2 fasts, one under 1000 day and one tdee day before hitting the weekend. we'll see.

CorrieDale · 18/04/2013 06:43

It'll be the crisps causing water retention. Drink plenty today and maybe do some exercise and all will be well by tomorrow. Crisps always do that to me. And chocolate, oddly.

CorrieDale · 18/04/2013 06:46

Well done postman pat! I am back this week after about 3 weeks off with sickness then Easter then holidays. At least the weight gained comes off fairly fast but I do wish I'd stuck to fasting. Or at least hadn't binged in the break. Sometimes I despair of myself, I really do.

IDismyname · 18/04/2013 07:35

Morning All!

Just reporting in for my second fast this week. I put on 2lbs last week Shock so am hoping that when I get on the scales tomorrow, I'll have lost. I have a coil, so no real TOTM for me - but maybe my body has one without me noticing!

I find that I actually like the feeling of being hungry these days. It used the scare the heck out of me, but now I acknowledge it - and even embrace it! It feels good, and slightly liberating.

Anyone else feel like that?

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 08:56

thanks corrie Smile hadn't thought of that. don't usually have crisps in the house but i did a big online shop and thought i'd get them in for ds. mistake!

swallowedAfly · 18/04/2013 08:57

you know i still don't think i really know what hunger feels like - not physical hunger - even on fast days i don't think i actually get to that stage but bow to head hunger in the end.

Minimammoth · 18/04/2013 09:23

Have been low with migraine this week so thought fasting not a good idea. Miraculously my weight has stayed at 10.9.5 . I feel as if I have been stuck there ages now. Humph.

Miffytastic · 18/04/2013 09:38

Thanks foks, will do MFP your'e right.

greenfig · 18/04/2013 09:53

Great to hear from you wildwater & good luck with the move.
Well done Postmanpatscat I want to be you Grin
I have finally started to shift some of the post Easter bulk that I was expecting would easily melt away Hmm but still 9.6 1/2, not back to previous low sadly. Woke up to fast today hungry but it is easing off now so I am determined to make at least my usual 16hrs. Think it'll be soup then eggs of some description for me today.

mehefin · 18/04/2013 09:59

Hi standard non working night fast here today and I feel I am really doing it properly as I have Laska's aubergine curry on the go! Will add the spinach when I reheat it later I think.

All the best to Thursday fasters

Whitecat · 18/04/2013 10:28

Good morning all. Well my 2lb up last week went down today. So I'm happy and back to where I was two weeks ago. I'm sure the same must have happened to others too. Fingers crossed for you all.

Dawndonna · 18/04/2013 10:31

Fast day today. Just done 20 minutes on the treadmill. 1 mile, got another to do. (Walking, and even then it all wobbles)! Grin

Whitecat · 18/04/2013 10:35

Dawn those wobbles are great burning more calories and firming you up.

Breadandwine · 18/04/2013 10:47

Well, I did it! A complete fast of 48 hours - and, TBH, I could have kept going.

The closest I came to 'hunger' was a slight feeling of 'something' in my tum yesterday evening. A sip of water and it was gone.

The end of the fast was interesting. Once I ate, the floodgates opened and I ate far more than I would do normally, I'm afraid.

I had half a pizza with some curried wedges, a large serving of chilli and a goodly portion of broccoli.

That was just the starter. I decided I deserved a pudding, so I knocked up a 'cake in a cereal bowl' (a variation on 'Cake in a mug'), which I had with some custard. Then, with my coffee I had a couple of pieces of chilli chocolate.

And, within a couple of minutes of finishing all this, I felt terrible. It's the first time I've over-eaten since I began this WOL - and I'll tell you this, it's also the last!

I tried to lie back in an armchair to take the pressure off my stomach, but this wasn't enough - I had to lie down upstairs. My belt was loosened, of course, but I also had to unbutton my 2" too big waistband.

Altogether, the feeling of discomfort lasted for couple of hours - and I really think I'll have to do a mini-fast tomorrow to make up for tonight's excesses.

Back to the fast: 6 months ago I would never have imagined I could go for 48 hours without solid food. Then I was very nervous about anything beyond 12 hours (which I'd had to do for a fasting blood test earlier).

I felt fine throughout. I did my pretty vigorous exercises on the two days, breaking 2 PBs on the first. I did over three hours of (unaccustomed) digging with no ill-effects - I just felt bloody good!

I doubt I'll do it again - I'm glad I did it, but I'm not sure what I got out of it that I don't get from 5:2 or 6:1. I did find it easy - I think if Mike Mosley had built up to his 3 day fast instead of going in blind, I reckon he too would have found it a lot easier than he did.

I just wanted to find out how long it would take before I experienced hunger - and I still don't know the answer! Confused

you know i still don't think i really know what hunger feels like - not physical hunger - even on fast days i don't think i actually get to that stage but bow to head hunger in the end.

Exactly so, saf!

What I can't figure out is how does somebody who used to scour the cupboards at times looking for anything remotely edible manage to go 36+ hours without food and feel completely indifferent?

Postman that's exactly how I felt! Not eating is a...well, it's a non-event, isn't it?

I'm coming round to the thought that fasting is the normal state for us - and that eating is a necessary interruption in our lives.

For all those at the start of 5:2, fasting does get easier, as the body adjusts. Don't beat yourself up if you fall of the wagon, treat it as just another step along the way to a new, sustainable WOL. As you get into fasting, I've found, you are able to go longer and longer - so it's another case of practice makes perfect, I guess!

Not only does it get easier, it becomes enjoyable. I've come the end of some fasts and I've been reluctant to eat again because I wanted the feeling to continue.

Best wishes to all fasters and feeders today - enjoy this new WOL whatever you're doing!

WW good to know your move is going well - keep us updated, please.

AngryFeet · 18/04/2013 10:56

2nd fast day here. I had a bad day yesterday as I went 500 cals over my TDEE Blush. Oh well, I won't make that mistake again. Didn't really need the food at all just had a couple of drinks and got all bingey.

Anyway I made myself a massive strifry last night. 500 g dry fried mushrooms and 600g stirfry mix with 200g sliced chicken. The whole thing comes to 500 cals so I will eat half for lunch and half for dinner.

Since I have so much weight to lose I am thinking about doing alternate day fasting. I found the fast day ok last time, the day after was easy to stick to my TDEE but the second day harder.

I will try it from Sunday as I have two events on Friday and Saturday which involve eating out and drinking.

Dawndonna · 18/04/2013 10:59

Fasting for too long a period is concerning and dangerous. I'm not for a second saying that anyone is, but I am saying beware of the pitfalls. Cults often use this as a method of control, there is a sense of achievement, a sense of euphoria attached to longer term fasting. It is enjoyable, and with the wrong person it becomes anorexia. Again, not saying anyone is, just be aware that it's all too easy to fall into something and not realise until it's too late.

AngryFeet · 18/04/2013 11:06

I was just thinking that Dawn. Shouldn't the diet just be followed as stated. Trying to fast for as long as possible almost sounds like it is becoming a competition. Remember that this whole idea is very new and hasn't been properly researched yet. The anorexia thing worries me too.

peplum41 · 18/04/2013 11:25

Hi all, fast day today, thursday is a good day for me because Im out the house for three hours in the evening in a non food environment, so no temptation - until I walk past the spar and chippy on the way home.

hi mehefin also doing a work free fast, and btw, I do eat at work, usually when Ive got the bulk of my chores done, around midnight Im starving. But like you, no longer eat as much, plus make healthier choices. Most of the time.Wink, there is a very tempting snack cupboard.

postmanpatscat well done, very inspirational. Smile

betsy it was happygolucky who recommended the calves remedy, not me. Not that clever. good idea, glad it worked. How did your fast and night shift go Happy?

greenfig yes felt the same when I woke up, and when I got back from walking the dog the bluberry muffins I made yesterday were looking at me, as were the crumpets which for some reason were sitting on the bread bin not in it. All temptations now removed from sight and Im ready to go.

alice hope it goes well, keep hydrated and the hunger comes in waves. You can eat that tomorrow.

peplum41 · 18/04/2013 11:28

Good point dawn, Know you mean it kindly and with concern. I didnt know that about cults, interesting.

katiegirl · 18/04/2013 11:58

I'm fasting again today. Its almost 12pm and I'm feeling a bit peckish but I haven't drank much yet. I have took the easy option for my evening meal and bought a ready-made soup, its only 160 calories for the pot so I'll have a banana, some natural yoghurt and maybe some grapes as well.

bugsyburge · 18/04/2013 12:04

oh dear well yesterday turned into a disaster!!! 300 over tdee & sugar consumed left right & centre!!!!!

fast day today and I am determined to do it successfully.

eeek 4 weeks til my holiday & I need to get myself in check....

greenfig · 18/04/2013 12:07

peplum I am baking again today while fasting. I've got warm lemon & lime blueberry drizzle cake, spiced apple cake & gingerbread looking at me & a chocolate cake on the way! Preferable for me than fasting on a friday though, I love the w/e friday night feeling & couldn't be strong tomorrow. Also cooking bacon rolls tomorrow so def won't be strong!!!Good luck today, what is your plan?

peplum41 · 18/04/2013 12:21

wowgreenfig that sounds delish! oh my tummy wants to reread your post. I could not bake and fast, even though im not even a good cook.
