The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

PoJ Yes, eat more! But make it nutrient dense calories rather than crap - nuts, seeds, avocados, bananas, home made olive oil-based salad dressing etc, all calorie rich and good for you.

BumB Yes, do 2 in row, plenty here do. Flexible innit?!

This sugar-free business has allowed my body to understand when it's full again, with no kind of "well, what's next then?" message coming from my brain. So nice and so missed. And I am pleasantly full. My appetite had very much increased along with the increasing levels of sugar.

So, unscientifically (as usual), I conclude that if fasting isn't giving you the appetite reduction that people talk about (such as wishidabs just there^) then it may be you need to cut your sugar intake right back as it does confuse your brain chemistry no end.

Wishihadabs · 17/04/2013 13:20

Betsy the appetite reduction is weird. I fasted yesterday and so far today have had 1egg, 1piece of toast, a cuppa soup and an apple. I often find this the day after a fast, then the more eating days I have the bigger my appetite seems to get. Anyone else find this ? It is counter intuitive.

BsshBossh · 17/04/2013 13:50

plecofjustice I agree with everyone else - up your calories and feed it what it needs that is, as BvB says, nutrient-dense, clean foods. You need to keep your metabolism burning strong and fuel is the only way to do it.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 17/04/2013 14:01

wishi it's not counter intuitive, it makes sense - imho, after fasting our stomachs shrink so we feel fuller more quickly on smaller amounts of food, slowly on non fasting days we get used to eating more and stomachs stretch again, but then a full fast resets again. I think thats why ADF works so well, but I don't fancy that, although if I had more weight to lose I would definitely consider it over any conventional diet methods.

mumofcrazynamedkids · 17/04/2013 14:01

pleco I'd definitely be aiming for your tdee on non fast days if you are feeling so hungry.

BumBiscuits · 17/04/2013 14:07

Cheers BVB!

It helps that Mr Bum is away with work and back late tonight.

I had a stir fry last night, at the request of my DDs and it was lovely. TBH it was something I didn't bother with before but a big plate comes in at 300 or so calories. I've also made them super low with beansprouts instead of noodles, which works really well.

I had a big bowl of house salad from M&S for lunch. I'm stuffed and I've only had 99 cals so far today Grin

akarucker · 17/04/2013 14:29

plecofjustice oh heck, don't go to bed hungry on an eat day! That's certainly not what this woe is about. I suggest upping your calories. Your body is hungry!! Not that I typically practice what I preach, but top up your cals with healthy stuff, not junk just to keep the calories high. A lot of people also find that a change kick starts weight loss again, whether it be increasing calories, or changing the number of fasts. HTH

noclue2000 · 17/04/2013 14:29

im thinking of starting this, could someone answer me a few questions?

can you do this on a day that you go to the gym?
if you do go to the gym should you add more cals?
how do you eat the 500 cals? in 1 go? as a few tiny meals?
should there be a certain number of hours that you dont eat?

thanks.

Wishihadabs · 17/04/2013 15:04

I'm no expert (only doing it myself for 5 weeks)

You can go to the gym personally I do pilates on my fast day as if I run I do get very hungry.
I don't eat any more calories.
I eat most of the calories in one go with a couple of bits of fruit at other times.
Few people split them in 2. Not many doing 3 meals.

SlipperyNipple · 17/04/2013 15:42

Betsy you are absolutely right about the counting calories thing. I just need to MFP for a couple of weeks and see what I'm doing. Of course I change my behaviour when I record the calories. However I can't live long term with calorie counting....all 'diets ' are like that. I need a WOL.

SlipperyNipple · 17/04/2013 15:44

noclue you will find a lot of that info in the first post in the thread. There is also a hints and tips thread which is good....somewhere.

bugsyburge · 17/04/2013 16:15

HELP!!! I've fell off the sugar wagon with a wagon wheel (no pun intended!!!!) & now all I want to do is eat!!!!! argh it's a feed day but I'm really annoyed with myself now!!!Angry

BetsyVanBell · 17/04/2013 16:21

wishidabs that's what I found in the first few weeks too, usually I'd then get really hungry on the 2nd day after a fast though! It went a bit wrong recently because increasing levels of daily sugary intake messed up my system a bit, but I'm back on track now :)

noclue There's loads of info in the op & links given there and these threads - please read!

Ideally at least 16hours (including a night's sleep) but everyone has their own way. There are no rules. Generally it's easiest to miss breakfast and go from there.

BetsyVanBell · 17/04/2013 16:24

Well Bugsy, that'll teach you won't it? stern teacher face Grin. You know what to do, stop there, close the cupboard, move on and do something that doesn't involve being in the kitchen (or wherever the temptation is).

bugsyburge · 17/04/2013 17:19

thanks bvb, I'm going to take myself off for a run!!!! no more sugarEnvy

akarucker · 17/04/2013 19:30

Does chocolate withdrawal cause headaches? My experiment would indicate that it does!

peplum41 · 17/04/2013 19:40

Just dashing in to build up some motivation to do an excercise DVD (tracy anderson). Its worked as usual.

Glad to see sugar free thingy working, Bugsy that run will cancel out the wagon wheel. If i was going to fall off the wagon would pick something nicer than those!

Might bob in later, if not then tomorrow - fast day! Again, very motivational.

Hi to all new posters, fasters and delurkers. hope to chat with you soon.Smile

Right ms Anderson, make me look like gwyneth.

wildwater · 17/04/2013 20:35

Greetings everybody - just checking in to say 'hi' and to update you re how I'm going.

The handover of the business and shifting out all went as well as could be. No great dramas. Now we have been 'unemployed & homeless' for a week...in fact, staying at my sister's huge house in the counry. Very comfortable indeed.

Any immediate problems are those of adjusting to suddenly NOT being under such great stress (as I was, if not LL). I still have plenty to keep me occupied, but it is not urgent or desperate as much of my immediate past was. We are now keeping 'normal' hours, instead of being flat out working in the evenings when everybody else is relaxing.

The good thing is that both of us have stuck to our 5:2 WOL. My sister's ancient dial-up scales weigh heavier than ours did (unless we have somehow gained a few kilos, which I doubt) so exact weights are impossible. But I feel lighter than I did, and my new jeans now need a belt to hold them up, so I think I am still losing.

The thing now is that everybody (well, most of them) is telling me I must not lose any more weight. As I'm at the top end of a healthy weight for my size, I think this is just because they aren't used to seeing me being 'not fat'. I am not at all 'scrawny' and I still have a good covering of flesh.

I don't necessarily want to lose more but if it just happens that's fine. Maybe I need to start reading the maintenance thread? I am not sure how to go about eating more 5 days and still fasting 2, as I want to keep on withall the health benefits. Any advice from you wonderful 'old-timers' would be much appreciated!

Update on move to Argentina: we are trying to find a cargo ship we might cross the Pacific on. Would be a great way to go!

Cheers & good luck to you all Smile

plecofjustice · 17/04/2013 20:52

Cheers all for the suggestions, OK so I'm going to try something radical and relax about eating more on eat days! Let's see what happens.... Smile

swallowedAfly · 17/04/2013 21:25

wildwater was lovely to read your update and i'm glad things are going well and you are getting to relax Smile

successful fast day today. nothing but black coffee and water all day (despite taking students on a trip and watching them demolish enough sandwiches, crisps and sweets to feed an army whilst i sipped my coffee) and then i had to do a quick turnaround home from work and out again for choir (i know it makes me sound ancient).

ended up feeling sick and yuk before practice started and ate an apple a friend had on them. now i've just had some really delicious, considering i made it, chicken and veg casserole.

i am making a real effort this week to eat more veg. have been thinking about the shocking absence of fibre in my diet so along with cutting out sugar i'm adding in lots more veg.

anyway, long and boring sorry.

i am really hoping the scales will be kind to me tomorrow.

Miffytastic · 17/04/2013 21:52

Hey all, I ended up fasting on Sunday last week instead of Monday, so didn't get to the computer to say hello.

Not sure when I'm going to fit in another fast this week. I'm on a course tomorrow and Friday, with meals provided - I don't know how weird I'll look to be not eating lunch on Friday, but that's to be weighed up against then having meals with my family at the weekend. Decisions decisions!

Also - STILL pretty static on the weight loss. Bouncing between 10.4 lowest post-fast and 10-7 :( This is upsetting me because I was 10-10 when I started on the 1st Feburary. Should I do 4:3? count more religiously on feastdays? what would you do?

AliceinSlumberland · 17/04/2013 21:57

Bit nervous about my first fast tomorrow but will try and keep busy and get on with it! Fingers crossed it goes okay.

BsshBossh · 17/04/2013 22:25

Miffy I'd log all my calories in My Fitness Pal for at least two weeks just to make sure you're not under/overeating on all days. Then look at other options.

WipsGlitter · 17/04/2013 22:33

alice I've found it easier to skip breakfast and then two small meals. Good luck!

postmanpatscat · 17/04/2013 22:55

I'm currently on 30 hours of fasting and this has turned into one of those zero-calorie fasts (likely to be from before 5pm yesterday until about 7am tomorrow). I couldn't resist the temptation as I'm only 100g away from last week's lowest weight of 57.5kg and I really want a new low for this week!

What I can't figure out is how does somebody who used to scour the cupboards at times looking for anything remotely edible manage to go 36+ hours without food and feel completely indifferent?

Miffy I second using MFP on non-fast days and would avoid 4:3 if possible - I'm sure someone somewhere (maybe 5:2 site forum) says it's not any more effective than 5:2.
