The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

cool. i kind of think that's challenge enough.

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 16:10

I haven't given up bread but I'm not eating white. I haven't given up potatoes either as it turns out! But all obvious sugar sources are gone (choc, cakes, biscuits, jam etc). Oh and booze.

I'm not a big sugary-things eater anymore but over the Easter holidays I did get used to having some sweet stuff every day and that started up my sugar cravings again (signified by frantic searching for sweet snacks immediately after a meal). Only realised it while I was giving akarucker some advice on here! I do a sugar-free couple of weeks once a year or so and once I've done a complete stop I can eat it normally without acting like a pig rooting for truffles.

Hi All,
To anyone who has hit a plateau or 'stalled' , and are being advised to do something different to surprise their bodies : I was reading something on Dr Ms website as follows' Your body burns fat at its most efficient between 12-20 hours of fasting and therefore there are no benefits to be gained from fasting beyond 20 hours'.
i found this very interesting as Ive never gone beyond 22 hours without food myself butI know there are those on here who do 27, 36 etc..which Ive thought is admirable ( but I couldnt do it) .
and no science in this whatsoever but Im with swallowed - the least fasting you can do ,and still acheive the beneficial results surely has got to be better than trying a surprise fast of something different ie 27 hours before you eat,if theres no benefits to doing a fast beyond 20 hours. I know thats all a bit convoluted but I think what Im trying to say is dont beat yourself up trying to think of solutions. This WOE does work eventually if you keep at it.( of course I also need to tell myself this when the scales dont move which is often)
I hope this is helpful, trying to be supportive...I for one wont be going without food on my fast days beyond 20 hours after reading that.

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 17:17

head - what i've read and seen is that the benefits start at 12 and peak at 24 hours and taper off after that. haven't seen the 20 figure before.

the surprises i'm talking about aren't about fasting longer but bizarrely things like eating more on your non fast days or having a solid few days off. i've previously found that this seems to make the return to fasting more effective - presumably through the contrast effect. god knows though.

have been for a wonderful big walk out in the fields with the boy and dogs enjoying a bit of sunshine at last. it also means my steps are a lot higher than they'd normally be on a non work day. spring/summertime is definitely going to help.

Talkinpeace · 16/04/2013 17:33

I fast for 24 hours because it is convenient to do it that way.
Supper one night then nothing but fluids till small supper the next night then nothing till lunch the next day

and I'm not doing it for weight loss any more.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/04/2013 17:39

I eat cake every day on my non-fast days. Don't see the point of losing my favourite food stuff Wink

I've now lost 15pounds and 15 inches - I hadn't measured until today so it was a massive surprise to lose so many inches.

I've done 2 days fasting together for the last 2 weeks and I've found that even easier, the 2nd day is much easier than the first.

The hardest day for me is trying to fast after a full eating day where I might have eaten over my TDEE - I went out for dinner last week and I roughly calculated I had about 2700 calories - next days fast was really hard.

virginposter · 16/04/2013 18:12

angryfeet Well done for getting through your first fast day. You don't actually mention what you ate yesterday, did you manage to stick with 500 cals?

BsshBossh · 16/04/2013 18:28

I heard 24 hours is the peak for weightloss benefits but that health benefits build up even post 24 hours hence my attempt at 36 hours (max though). I'm sure I'll make up the lack of 500 cals (if I make it) on a non-fast day Grin so weightloss isn't my goal on today's fast.

wonderingagain · 16/04/2013 18:34

Book ordered - raring to go! This thread is so encouraging. 3st to lose, feel like a tellytubby at the moment.

WipsGlitter · 16/04/2013 18:38

Week two - day three
Salad leaves with prawns (yum)
Sainsburys chicken korma soup (also yum)

katiegirl · 16/04/2013 18:43

I've fasted today for the 4th time, however I did have almost a fortnight off over the Easter hols and ate loads of rubbish Confused I'm back on it now though! I am finally starting to realise that I do not feel good for eating lots of processed rubbish.

I've also started 30 day shred, on my second day today. I ache a lot, and in places I don't usually ache after exercise, but I'm feeling determined. I've never been physically fit and I've came to a decision that there is absolutely no reason I can't be. Yes it will be hard work, but I've achieved lots of other things in my life through hard work so I can do this as well!

katiegirl · 16/04/2013 18:48

Oh yeah today I've eaten chickpea and chorizo soup from the co-op. It was really tasty, very substantial and only 340 calories for the whole tub. I will probably have a banana later on.

monster54 · 16/04/2013 18:59

Ok...I need a virtual kick up the bum....

Failed fast yesterday ended up a low cal day. Around 1000...tried again today and failed again! Am going to finish around 600...I just can't stop picking!!

I'm v tired and have lost all sense of control!!!

Northstarmum · 16/04/2013 19:26

monster consider yourself kicked! If you stop now you'll have only had 600 (which is near enough a fast and as good as I've ever managed). Don't beat yourself up, with a 600 day and a 1000 calorie day consecutively why not give yourself a day off and come back to it on Thursday or Friday?

monster54 · 16/04/2013 19:41

Thanks northstar I'm going to make a coffee and have a day off tomorrow. Need to check my calendar for TOM...feeling a little emosh!!!

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 19:42

In best Jeremy Paxman stylee Come on Monster Get it together! not that I usually end up round the 600 - 700 mark ever or anything Grin

happygolucky0 · 16/04/2013 19:47

Hi wondered if anyone can help. I have done a 20 hour fast today and eat at 6.30pm. I sometimes pick up a night shift as extra and have one tonight. For the fasts that I have done I would usually eat when I feel hungry after waking tomorrow.
Do you think that is the right thing to do eg wait till 9am tomorrow. I am all confused!! Not sure if I will make having been awake and not asleep for that long on some few calories.

greenfig · 16/04/2013 19:57

monster I am over again too. I know exercise is not supposed to be counted against but I plan to put in a little extra tonight. It can't hurt!

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 20:04

Happygolucky That's a tough one! Are you able to take in some healthy snack stuff or boiled eggs or something so that you have something to hand when you need it? You've already done a great fast so don't worry if you need to eat extra during your shift. But you may surprise yourself and not need anything at all. Let us know how you get on.

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 20:06

I went out for a run this evening and like a complete idiot forgot to do any stretches when I got back. What sensible things can I do to stop my calves seizing up?

monster54 · 16/04/2013 20:11

Thanks bvb and greenfig I'm glad I'm not the only one wavering....

I'm heading to bed to stop thinking about food!!! Urrrggghhh I don't know what's up with me!!! Just not feeling it at all and I love this WOL...

Well done on the exercise front hun! I take my hat off to you...I have enough energy to get into bed!!!

mehefin · 16/04/2013 20:15

happygolucky hi I work nights. I look at it this way, tomorrow starts at midnight so eat something when you need. As Betsy says take something healthy with you otherwise the biscuits will be calling at 4am. Working through the night is a strain on your body anyway so don't feel you have to make it harder - you've already had your successful fast.

happygolucky0 · 16/04/2013 20:16

Thank you BetsyVanBell. Sorry I can see you all go bold when you mention a name but I have not worked it out yet!! We can eat whatever we like from the fridge/cupboards at work, probably why I am trying to lose weight now!! I will try and stay away from the food and drink loads that is my plan.
All I would do about the calves would try and have some calcium and magnesium in some form or another. (I suffer with cramps and that is what helps me).

happygolucky0 · 16/04/2013 20:18

Aww thanks Mehefin that is a relief!!

mehefin · 16/04/2013 20:22

I'm working tonight, not a fast day but my food is brown rice and cottage cheese about 1am and grapefruit at 4am couldn't be more of a contrast to what I used to eat at night pre 5:2 !
