The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi Slippery I have quite a lot to lose too. I'm 5'4'' and started at 14 stone 3 lbs in January. Now 12 stone 11 lbs so slowly getting there but am finding this something I can keep going with. Some weeks I stay the same and on past diets I would have given up at that point and stuffed my face with all of the foods I felt I had deprived myself of. As deprivation now is no more than one day at a time, I'm finding I don't get that deperate yearning for something naughty but nice. At last I think I have found a sustainable way to reduce my weight. Just have to be patient!

SlipperyNipple · 16/04/2013 10:12

Akarucker - yes I know. I'm very impressed by your alternate day fasting. There is no way I could do that I think.

I don't have a chocolate habit - can take it or leave it. It's carbs and cheese that I love.

Anyway I suppose I'm just comparing to other diets I have done where I lose a lot every week. But I can't stick to them. Slow and steady will win the race!

greenfig · 16/04/2013 10:18

Morning all & great to see so many new starters/de lurkers, good luck!
My first no sugar day was a fail, sorry! Well done to all those that were successful though. So silly as I hardly ever eat much but after a good day of salads I scoffed a handful of mini brownies while out. They weren't even particularly tempting ones Confused However, I did do my exercise & am fasting today. I am planning on logging on MFP to keep myself in check if anybody would like to add me do. I am smoodgelly on there. daisy (i think it was?) I know how you feel re the stall. It's frustrating but I am spurred on by all the success stories & it's such an easy woe to follow it doesn't feel like effort for no loss IYSWIM Smile

SaltyandSweet · 16/04/2013 10:26

Thanks for the reminder bvb, will stock up at the supermarket today. For me the fasting part isn't as hard as the eating within TDEE part, though my TDEE is 2100 so I shouldn't complain, as it requires paying attention and being mindful! Another lesson to learn.

I weighed myself and am still at 76kgs (11.9), the low I saw on Saturday which I was sure was a trick and I'd bounce back up to 12.2 after an eating weekend ... so slightly gobsmacked! This is good motivation to watch what I am eating on eat days.

peplum41 · 16/04/2013 10:29

Hi slippery, I figured that with a 1lb per week weight loss, which is the average it settles down to after the initial 10lbs blasts off, it would take me roughly a year to get to a good low healthy BMI. Now on a "normal" diet, that would seem an agonisingly long time, and with Weight Watchers or Slimming World expensive. But ofcourse, with IF, its great because you get relief from dieting every couple of days, plus I do actually like fastingShock! Ive got some nice clothes which have been taking up space in my wardrobe for years which Im hoping to fit into over the next few weeks and months. Plus the weeks seem to fly by, cant believe its mid april already. So slow and steady might not seem that slow.

peplum41 · 16/04/2013 10:39

Hi to all just joining us, keep us posted with your progress and winges. Definately take some measurements, you will be glad you did when the scales start mucking you about - and they will. plus its not so tempting to whip out the tape measure as it is to hop in the scales.

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 10:48

if i lost a pound a week then i'd be 10st2lbs by the time i went on holiday in early july. not as little as i'd like to be but not bad really.

i'm going to hope i manage to lose a little more than that but that would do really if it's relatively easy.

welcome to all newcomers Smile

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 10:50

if i lost 1.5lbs a week then i'd be 9st11/12 and ecstatic. fingers crossed.

SlipperyNipple · 16/04/2013 11:26

As others have said - I find fasting easy. I just need tobe slightly more measured on other days. I got fat because I eat too much.

Still I think the fasting is having positive effects on my other eating. Just got to give it time.

Emilythornesbff · 16/04/2013 11:49

You all seem to be doing really well.
With 2 stone to lose I'm reducing my portion sizes and minimising refined carbs. I'm giving 5:2 a go in order to boost my weight loss.
Ot'snpt tough going. On a fasting day today and I'm definitely hungry. Going to have a marmite drink in a minute to stave off hunger and have some fluid. Looking forward to bean soup for dinner.
Does the fasting get easier? I thought I'd do today and friday but it's not as easy as I was hoping.

AngryFeet · 16/04/2013 12:10

Morning!

My first fast yesterday was ok. The first half of the day was easy but after abotu 4pm I started to feel very hungry then after 6pm I felt quite rough (very tired, mild headache and my chest felt a bit tight which it can do when I feel a bit stressed or anxious so maybe it was that). Anyway it took me a while to get to sleep as I was so hungry but when I woke up this morning (after planning last night the amazing b/fast I was going to have Grin) I wasn't hungry. Had breakfast when I got to work at 9.30 (egg and bacon M&S sarnie). It was a bit blah. I am craving food that is a bit more taste over quantity which is unusual for me! For lunch I have a beef and ginger stir fry with lots of veg. I will probably have a snack late afternoon if I fancy it as I don't have dinner normally till 8pm (is that ok for this diet?). Dinner is these lovely Waitrose salmon things with some rice and veg. Might have a glass of wine too :) All that only works out to about 1650 though (TDEE is 1961).

melodyangel · 16/04/2013 12:20

Haven't posted for ages sorry everyone!

Good to hear of so many success stories.

Still not really losing any weight on this but DH is doing really well, over a stone and a half since Feb. Hoping eventually I'll start seeing the benefit especially as I'm back to running again and spring may be here finally so hours of gardening to catch up on.

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 12:21

it does get easier emily yes.

am actually cooking lunch Shock very unusual for me. aiming to eat something 'real' before i get into hungry reach for crap mode so doing a mini chicken stirfry. just realised as i was cooking that as i'm only about to eat now it's actually 300cals in over 40hrs that i've done this time. please body respond!!

SlipperyNipple · 16/04/2013 12:36

How much do you weigh melody?

tomorrowweeat · 16/04/2013 12:48

Broke my fast with a couple of nuts. Ooooooooooo they tasted so good and unbelievably sweet. I'm finding it very difficult to think what to eat today that doesn't have sugar in. Can't fancy egg on toast without tomato sauce and baked beans are out as is bread really I suppose. I love soups but want to keep that just for fast days. Any sugar free lunch suggestions anyone?

BsshBossh · 16/04/2013 12:57

TIP but I am slimmer than they are so neeeuuugghh! Love it Grin.

I'm fasting today. Going to try for a 36 hour one but having been to the gym yesterday and today and feeling sore and tired I may not. Will aim for 22/24 hours (around 8.30pm) then see whether I need my 500 cals or not.

Emilythornesbff · 16/04/2013 13:24

Thanks swallowed a fly that helps.

BsshBossh · 16/04/2013 13:26

Dotty I've stayed the same for the last 3 weeks too. Don't be disheartened - last year I lost just 4 lbs in 4 months - gaining, losing, maintaining in what felt like an endless cycle but fortunately I just kept going (not 5:2 just calorie controlled diet) and after 4 months the weight started shifting again! I think it was my body getting used to the weight loss and wanting to stabilise a bit. The great thing about the "stall" was that it gae me time to get used to eating "at maintenance" as I didn't change my diet whatsoever (kept on eating at TDEE minus 10%). This is why I'm not too overly concerned at my current stall/maintain.

Dotty342kids · 16/04/2013 13:30

Thanks BssBossh that's really interesting to hear. I'm trying not to get annoyed by it but today have indulged in some rocky road and ginger cake (I am def an emotional eater!).

Twinmama32 · 16/04/2013 13:51

Hi there everyone! Hope those who are fasting today are finding it easy. I've discovered that for me the easiest way to avoid eating is to batch cook and bake on fast days, how odd is that?! I think it must be the smell of the food almost convinces me I've eaten when I haven't.
Just broke my fast with a marmite drink and will hang on for dinner which is spicy lentil & root veg curry mmmmm yum!

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 16/04/2013 13:53

Depressed after getting out the tape measure! I thought I was maybe 30" as my jeans are that, or a size 10 ish (14 on too!) Nope I am 37"!!!!! AND I breathed in! AND I have been doing this 4:3 for nearly 1 weeks.

Ho Hum. Glad I measured myself on a fast day as it's gone me the impetus to keep going and not eat today.

Might measure myself without breathing in in a few days when I next find it hard to get the motivation.

Although saying all that, the fasting days aren't nearly as bad as I thought they'd be. But I cannot face cooking on fast days, I have to buy something from Waitrose that's calorie controlled.

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 16/04/2013 13:53

Should say size 14 on top.

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 15:17

have spent the day a bit puzzled as to how come i'm not eating any sugar for 2 weeks - think i got swept along with everyone else Grin

what i wanted to do and will revert to doing was to give up chocolate/biscuits/cakes etc in solidarity for those tackling chocolate addictions. definitely not up for giving up all sources of sugar - just all the sweet 'treats'.

good luck to those giving up everything with sugar in it

bugsyburge · 16/04/2013 15:19

I'm just giving up choc, biscuits & cake SAF

Dotty342kids · 16/04/2013 15:31

And if I don't see any scales budge by Friday, I may join you in that one!
