The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well it's my first fasting day today I ate at 7pm last night. And I have just finished off a ready made (I'm a terrible cook) fish pie with a big hand full of sweetcorn the pie was 347 kcals and I can't see the sweetcorn being the rest of the 153.

I think I did well for my first day. I've just bought the book on as a ebook, so I've got some bedtime reading to do tonight.

Breadandwine · 16/04/2013 20:39

Hi folks - and welcome to all the newcomers to the thread, you're in the right place! Smile

I'm with you, Bssh, about the health benefits of a longer fast. I've been keeping an eye on you and others who are doing 36 hour complete fasts - NatashaMousse was the first on these threads to do one - and there's also Postman, SAF - and others I've probably missed. I'm in the middle of a projected 48 hour fast, ATM.

I generally fast for 24 hours, have a low calorie dinner, then follow that the next day with a mini-fast - eating normally after that. (Sort of a 6:1 and a half.) But this time I've cut out the low calorie meal, hoping to go from yesterday at 7.30 until Wednesday at 7.30. Only 23 hours to go! Grin

i've never been hungry on any of my fasts (once I stopped eating 3 small meals on a fasting day), and I'm curious as to just when hunger would strike. Not sure what I'll do if I don't feel hungry by tomorrow evening. I could either carry on until breakfast on Thursday, or have a

happygolucky - just under the text box, next to the smiley list, you'll see a list entitled Emphasis. Just follow the instructions.

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 20:47

Well done highschoolsweetheart! Fabulous first fast :)

Happygolucky you just put asterisks on each side of the bit you want to bold. Thanks for the magnesium & calcium tip, I've taken a vitamin and I've eaten loads of cashew nuts! Also, my spinachy veggie dinner's got to be good too. (I'm not on a fast day btw)

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 20:53

Bread&Wine You'll be sticking on top of a stick in the desert before you know it! Tricky to dance on a stick though...

ELR · 16/04/2013 21:03

Well the no sugar thing is definitely a fail for me!! Made some cranberry, white chocolate and oat cookies ate 4, 157 calories each!! Oh dear that's what happens when I say no I'm not having something I have loads of it. The weird thing is I would not normally eat like that, everything else I've had today has been no added sugar as per my usual way of eating.
Oh we'll home baking its a killer......
On a positive note after yesterday's fast I'm down another 3/4 of a lb my lowest weight 10st4.5 in over 8 years!
Instead of saying no to sugar I'm saying no to home baking for two weeks. Its not a problem avoiding other stuff the house is full of chocs and biscuits post Easter and they don't tempt me at all.
Well done highschool that's a really good first day.

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 21:10

elr i was a bit baffled earlier by someone saying they had two cookies and that was 100cals down the drain - would love to know where 50 cal cookies exist. home made stuff is hard to resist especially when it's still warm, fresh baked yumminess. don't think i could handle baking on a fast day.

ELR · 16/04/2013 21:30

swallowed Nairns dark chocolate oat biscuits 44 calories, doves farm whole wheat digestives 47 calories nice but not a patch on homemade!
The ones I baked were lower sugar than a usual cookie too! I run my own business teaching cooking classes for children and devised the recipe to have a lower sugar/fat content. I have baked loads on a fast day and I'm not tempted but when I'm not fasting like today it's just too hard to resist!

BeckyBrandon · 16/04/2013 21:33

So glad I found this thread. Just marking my place. Someone on my FB page is on this diet and he looks fantastic.

Going to start asap. Just going to have a snoop through the recipe thread.

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 21:39

elr i thought i'd done well finding 75cal digestives - those are low. it's ds who eats the biscuits and i manage to totally ignore their presence in the house. if i bake cookies though i cannot resist. warm, just baked cookies are too good for me to ignore.

melodyangel · 16/04/2013 21:42

SlipperyNipple - about 9stone 11lbs. Didn't start weighing until about a month in to this WOE as didn't have any reliable scales, although the new ones seem rather temperamental too! I have lost about 5lbs. Could be worse.

I'm 5' 3 and definitely pear shaped.

Home baked brownies here, Nigella ones, I dread to think how many calories they are as she isn't shy with the sugar in them.

Congrats on your first fast completed Highschoolsweetheart

BsshBossh · 16/04/2013 21:54

BreadandWine I couldn't make it to 36hrs. Caved in at 24hrs. I wasn't physically hungry at all - it was all my brain! So will try again this Thursday.

BsshBossh · 16/04/2013 22:08

Ah, if I'd read earlier BreadandWine that you were doing a long 24+ hour fast I'd have tried harder Smile. Thinking of you now - keep going!

My recollection of her was that Natasha also had a rigorous exercise regime. I've started a heavy lifting programme in addition to my cardio - 5 times a week - and am much more tired & sore - and was wondering whether this was in fact a good week to try for longer fasts.... Hmmm, well I can always try it. I figure once I achieve a 36 hr fast I'll be able to repeat it. I mean, before 5:2 I never fasted for longer than 14 hours!

peplum41 · 16/04/2013 22:18

Evening all
Elr, sounds a nice business. How do you fit your fasts around that?

Betsy you are such an amusing poster! Like a pig looking for truffles and the unforgettable image of bread and wine fasting away on a stick in the desert.

Hi mehefin, just what did you used to eat on a night shift? Are you busy at night? It's generally quiet at mine at the mo, which is how I like it as can be mentally stressful, that's when I would be tempted to comfort eat. I felt really sick at work the other night for the first time since starting this woe, just sat down for a few minutes and it went. Think it was due to totm. Must be nice to have workmates to 5:2 with.

Southeastdweller · 16/04/2013 22:20

swallowed It was me who had the cookies yesterday.

I think you're in NZ? Over here in the U.K you can get plenty of cookies (small ones) in supermarkets that start from 45 calories or so. When I said it was 100 calories down the drain I meant that I should have had something like an apple for 50 which would have filled me up and not give severe hunger pangs like the cookies did.

sausages51 · 16/04/2013 22:21

Well,I must share. I am not slim by any means and have,as previously posted lost a stone since Jan. That in itself is fab. But on Sunday I put on a jacket (which buried me) ignored that. But today, and I am not exaggerating, my smart navy (now ex-smart!) Were falling down and off and the gusset was very yukkily heading for my knees! I just can't believe it! and I checked the label. No Lycra. Fantastic. Except, what to wear tomorrow? Eek! Carry on all. If this has happened to me I KNOW you all can do it. And I am VERY naughty on normal days. And the health benefits too. So chuffed,so stunned. :-)

sausages51 · 16/04/2013 22:23

Trousers! (Over-eager post!) Forgive me in my excitement and delirium! :-)

peplum41 · 16/04/2013 22:24

Just had one glass of wine, and feel knackered. Off to bed you lightweight.

Breadandwine · 17/04/2013 01:23

sausages that's brilliant! Well done!

Bssh you're right, it's all in the mind. Knowing that, you'll do it easily on Thursday, I know you will.

I spoke to my wife earlier, who said "I hope you've done the washing up", I just told her there were no dishes in the sink, they were all on the draining board. Grin

It did feel weird, not cooking an evening meal - I almost got withdrawal symptoms!

Bread&Wine You'll be sticking on top of a stick in the desert before you know it! Tricky to dance on a stick though...

Betsy, I'm just gearing up for a couple of 'Feast' days over the weekend - I have Chelsea buns and pizza in the freezer, just waiting for me to finish fasting. Then there are the ginger biscuits (45 cals, folks, vegan and no palm oil) and the Oaties, and the chilli chocolate - I won't starve myself, you can be sure.

ELR those homemade digestives sound interesting - any chance of the recipe? Smile

Welcome to the thread, Becky - we're glad you found us! Grin

Back to my wife - turns out she may be longer away than thought - so now she's dropping hints about bedrooms that need painting! [EEK!]

Look alright to me!Wink

Cuddledup · 17/04/2013 06:47

I'm just about to start fast no.2 and I'm hoping it'll be as easy as Monday's fast.
For anyone interested in the "evils" of sugar - I recently read these articles. Really sobering / depressing!
Have a good day y'all.

akarucker · 17/04/2013 07:36

Day four of no sweet treats coming up. It must be working because I hit a new low this morning. That makes 12lbs lost in nine weeks of ADF. Eat day today so trying to keep up the good work, but will look forward to a lovely lamb dinner tonight (just no pudding Sad).

Good luck Wednesday fasters. Stay strong sugar detoxers. Eat well eating day people.

Dawndonna · 17/04/2013 07:43

Ate like nothing on earth yesterday, so will have to go easy today. Not a fast day, but I'm going to try to keep the calories down anyway. Got lots of soup in Tesco last night, so soup for lunch, salad for tea.

swallowedAfly · 17/04/2013 07:52

south i'm in the uk too - wish i was in NZ or had been for the last few months whilst the sun was shining Smile

great stuff sausages hope you find something to wear.

i've taken so long to read and to write the beginning of this post i bet i've now missed loads of posts so going to refresh.

swallowedAfly · 17/04/2013 07:56

good news on loss aka it obviously will work given the amount of excess calories you're losing just with the chocolate alone. hope the 2 weeks off resets things and you can find a better balance.

well i'm 10.12.4 today - yesterday was an eat day but i was hoping it would go down a bit more as i didn't seem to have lost enough from my fast the day before so today is the delayed effect itms. i'm planning on fasting today but have to take a group of students on an out of town trip and am hoping travel sickness doesn't get to me. it tends to be worst if i haven't eaten. if i have to eat i will - guess i should take something with me actually so if i do have to it doesn't blow the fast.

to those having 'glowing skin' i'm a bit Envy my skin is a nightmare at the minute and i feel like i've done ten years of aging this winter. hoping the sun might help.

swallowedAfly · 17/04/2013 07:57

tends to be worst? it tends to be at it's worst maybe Confused
