The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

morning Smile

postman yes i'm not much down after yesterdays fast - now 10st13 which is not as low as my lowest weight before bounce attack but hey ho it's the right direction. 5% is a good change - my fat percentage is shocking still but improved.

dotty - thanks for the impressed-ness but didn't do it in the end. i went on 25hrs on no cals and then ate just under 300. still a good fast and maybe the scales will have a delayed response to it if i'm lucky.

forgot to say i went to the docs yesterday and she was really impressed with my losing a stone in a couple of months and wasn't at all critical of how i'd done it thankfully. i take a medication that is infamous for causing weight gain and last time i was there we were looking at stopping it even though it does the job very well. now we're going to continue and see how it goes seeing as i've managed to do the impossible and lose weight on it.

shopping being delivered today so no excuses for not eating healthily.

Dawndonna · 16/04/2013 07:27

Weighed in this morning and have stayed the same, despite fasting yesterday, but heyho, after losing 4lbs last week, I guess I can't complain.

Highschoolsweetheart · 16/04/2013 07:34

talkinpeace I quiet like fruit tea so I might drink that with out milk to start I may (probably will) have the odd black coffee. I've just weighted myself I'm 16 stone 4. And it's going to be my first fasting day today let's see how I go. Grin

SaltyandSweet · 16/04/2013 07:55

Morning. Successful fast yesterday though still too chicken to get on the scales Blush. Thinking of doing another fast today as I was wondering whether it would be ok to fast four times a week every alternate week to shake things up- I was thinking of Mon, Tues and Thurs, Fri. Eating normally (I don't calorie count, just try to be mostly sensible) on Wed and Sun and probably indulging a little bit more on Sat.

Could I ask for opinions on whether this is a good/bad idea? It's just that I usually enjoy fasting and I have lots to lose so was wondering ...

I currently fast Mon, Wed and Fri (doing 4:3), was 12.2 last Saturday, started this WOE at 13.3 around mid-Feb. Am 5'9 and want to hit 9.9.

Dotty342kids · 16/04/2013 08:11

Grr, scales this morning still saying 11st 1lb. I've been stuck here for about four weeks now and even I, usually very positive about this WOE, am beginning to feel a little disheartened. 8lbs loss overall, in 10 weeks but nothing shifted for approx 3 weeks. Sad

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 08:24

Unscientific result of eating no sugar for 2 days, sample size of 1: maintained my low post-fast weight after an eat day. Pleased with that :)

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 08:30

dotty i'm with you (other than i have shifted down a couple of pounds but easily seem to bounce straight back to 11.1). nothing useful to offer other than understanding and a hope that hanging in there works eventually. i'm mixing things up with the no sugar this week - is there something you could do to surprise your body/mix things up?

saltyandsweet - i'd avoid it personally because i tend to be of the belief that the lesser measures taken to cause a change the better - in my possibly flawed logic i think if you can effect change without going to extremes that change is more sustainable and realistic. i also harbour a suspicion that if i do loads my body will come to expect loads and not be as responsive to small changes. but that's just me obviously.

akarucker · 16/04/2013 08:30

Good news bvb. Encouraging here too - my hefty 4lb gain from last week disappeared. Fasting again today so day 3 of no sugar here I come...

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 08:32

x posted - so glad our mystery 4lb gains have disappeared aka Grin not nice to see such a leap on the scales.

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 08:40

Excellent news aka - how did you find the cravings on your eat day?

akarucker · 16/04/2013 08:44

Not gonna lie....it was hard! Obsessed about Twirls all day (and I haven't even had one for about a year!!), but feeling quite virtuous today that I didn't cave in.

SaltyandSweet · 16/04/2013 08:57

saf thanks for your input, I see your point. I guess it is about having a WOL that we can maintain forever when weight is no longer an issue. I do really believe in this WOL and it is definitely for me. I was just wondering whether a change in routine would help, so to change things around every other week or so. Still unsure whether it would actually help. I'm in this for the long haul as it's the health benefits that make this the ultimate eating plan for life. I do 4:3 already, started off that way have never done 5:2, holding that in reserve for when I'm closer to my goal weight. You're right though, maybe I'm being obsessive Grin

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 09:01

Salty&Sweet Have you actually stalled? All of us do but eventually the body gets going again and I believe there's no point rushing it if you want it to be weight that goes forever. There's a link about the science behind plateaus somewhere I'll see if I can find it.

swallowedAfly · 16/04/2013 09:01

i jsut don't trust my body saltyandsweet - losing weight feels like trying to out cunning it as if it is set against me determined to thwart my efforts Grin clearly those are my ishoos there.

SlipperyNipple · 16/04/2013 09:08

Fast yesterday went well. But am in a mini stall. Or at least losing very slowly.

Dotty342kids · 16/04/2013 09:21

saf not sure how to "surprise" my body (unless jumping out and saying "boo" at myself counts Grin ). On a more serious note, I did a week of ADF just prior to Easter to hopefully mitigate Easter and the next few days away. It's my birthday this weekend and am away or out for meals Fri/Sat/Sun and Mon but after that I may switch back to ADF for the remainder of that week and see if that makes a difference.

SlipperyNipple · 16/04/2013 09:22

Rather than do more fasting I'm going to be more careful on non fast days. I need this to be maintainable forever.

I'm now 15.7 after a fast. I'm 5.6. So a lot to lose and a bit of me really wants it to go quickly...but I do know that I need to be patient.

Anybody else out there with a lot to lose?

SaltyandSweet · 16/04/2013 09:27

bvb I stalled for about 3 weeks, then lost 4lbs last week (apparently, I'm sure there'll be a bounce up when I weigh in today). I did consecutive fasts last week (Tues, Thurs and Fri) and thought maybe that gave me a push? Which is where this admittedly strange idea of adding another fast day and making them consecutive came up! You and saf speak sense though so maybe I need to reign in my enthusiasm (er, impatience Grin) and stick to my usual 4:3 ...

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 09:31

Hmm can't find that info about plateaus - something about once you've lost 10% (or whatever) of your weight your body stops to take time to recalibrate to your new set point and this can take a few weeks. Once your body accepts this is your actual weight it then lets you shift more weight. Horribly unscientific explanation, I'm hopeless at remembering detail! Anyway, the point is that we all go through plateaus and the important thing is to keep going regardless, perhaps looking at other markers like how nicely your clothes are fitting or that half inch that's gone from your waist, how your skin is glowing and not get hung up on the scales not moving - easier said than done I know.

Another reason for plateaus or indeed weight increase is that we all start diets and this WOE with great intentions and being careful even on eat days and then little by little we relax and eat & drink a bit more than we were... well that's what happens to me anyway Blush

So it can all feel horribly slow but think of the health benefits and how you're far less likely (I think) to put all this slowly lost weight back on again.

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 09:39

S&S while I was looking back through these threads there was a link to the 5:2 Forum which was comparing loss on 5:2 and 4:3 and it all came out as losing 1lb a week overall. But I don't know if that was more than a study of one person so maybe irrelevant (and I lost the link to that actual bit). However, that forum is a great resource for scientific links in the 'nerdy stuff' section.

SaltyandSweet · 16/04/2013 09:42

Thanks very much bvb, all very helpful! Ok you both have convinced me, am sticking to 4:3 and will concentrate on health benefits when I next plateau (someone remind me please Smile)

SaltyandSweet · 16/04/2013 09:42

Oh and I guess I can eat today Grin !!!

BetsyVanBell · 16/04/2013 09:45

S&S And don't forget that your eat days should contrast properly with your fast days so add in lots of nutrient dense but calorific stuff like nuts and seeds, avocados. (I'm reminding myself here too! Must buy some avos...)

Farewelltoarms · 16/04/2013 10:00

Hello can I join you? My first fast was yesterday and (I know I'm not supposed to weigh myself so early) but it did result in a 3lb overnight weight loss. I know, I know, but still, it made me happy.
I'm in my 40s and I find my weight fluctuates madly these days. I was 10.8 before Easter and then 10.13 a week later. That is a mountain of easter eggs, that I'm not sure I ate. Before I had children, my weight varied from 9 and half stone to 10 and a half (and 9 stone 3 on my wedding day, yay). Now it's from 10 to 11 but more often nearer the latter than the former. So I'm not massively heavier than in my youth, which is the advantage I suppose of never having been a gorgeous skinny minny like a lot of my friends who now bemoan their gain.
Anyway, despite yesterday being a stressful day, I managed it. Salmon sashimi at 10am and soup at 7, so I didn't quite manage a 16 hour fast. I've done MFP and low carb but this seems good with children and constant food availability because it's all or nothing. Even one day and I realised how much mindless snacking I do, handfuls of dry cereal and rubbish like that.
I'm a bit irked that Mimi Spencer is the same height as me and started off as heiferlumpish huuuge 9 and a half stone, but I suppose everyone has their different ideals. I think I'd look gaunt at much less than 10 so I'm aiming to lose a stone.
And thank you for all this thread. As well as not eating more than 500 carbs yesterday, I also read all 600 messages. Double achievement.

akarucker · 16/04/2013 10:02

SN I too, have a lot to lose. Patience...it took time to pile it on, it will take time to strip it off. I was at 15st10 nine weeks ago, and now I'm at 14st13. Slow and steady. My ultimate goal is 11st7 (I'm 5'9") but it seems so far away. I actually weigh in lbs (years of living in the USA), and my current weight is 209lbs so my next mini goal is 199lbs. I want to get rid of that '2' at the beginning!

The support on this board is amazing, so stick with it. I had a mini meltdown over the weekend, but thanks to people on here, all feels good and doable again.
