The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

ellenbrody · 15/04/2013 19:20

saf re: 11 Easter eggs - 2 are mine and the rest are the kids, but in our house we share!!! Smile

Fasting today, will have my salad dinner in a bit I think. Welcome newcomers!

peplum41 · 15/04/2013 19:20

Yes aka just keep going til bedtime, seem to remember chanting that to myself back then! Are you going to fast again tomorrow? See I couldnt do that.

talkin is that your usual pattern? Are you an early to bed type?

Twinmama32 · 15/04/2013 19:27

BetsyVanBell thanks for the kind words, I really hope you're right, just stepped back on the scales (obsessive through fear!) and now it's 11Ibs up...at this rate i will be back to where I started by the morning!! Fast day tomorrow for sure and a light dinner tonight for me Shock

akarucker · 15/04/2013 19:30

peplum yes fast again tomorrow. I'm not ready to be released into the 5:2 community yet...If I manage these two weeks of no choc then I'll try 4:3 again. That can be my reward!!!

BetsyVanBell · 15/04/2013 19:31

OOh, twinmama I only ever look at the scales first thing in the morning after a wee (and preferably a poo too!) and always before eating. The numbers change by several pounds for the worse during the day and I only want to see my lowest weight!

swallowedAfly · 15/04/2013 19:36

head the mystery of weird scale surges. mine was back down below 11 again this morning after a weekend of not fasting. no.sense.in.it.

still haven't eaten. not sure if i should bother? sounds good now but time will tell if i can manage it. would like to get hyper ds into bed and get myself an early night.

Twinmama32 · 15/04/2013 19:36

BetsyVanBell gah I know I know you're right but that bad weigh-in this morning has thrown me and my logic off kilter! The only good thing is that on previous diets I'd have been eating choc by now to make me feel better at least I know I can correct this and my mentality has clearly changed considerably. Onwards and downwards eh?!

jubbablub · 15/04/2013 20:12

peplum41 and GreenEggsAndNichts maybe you're right. I suppose I could just still have my normal tea tonight and then feel super virtuous about not snacking this afternoon and then go fast from tomorrow morning onwards. Right, new plan of action!!

Gutted though, as one of the kids in another class brought in cake and there was spare and I refused believing that I was actually fasting!!

Talkinpeace · 15/04/2013 20:28

is now STUFFED !
A whole tub of Waitrose spicy butterbean soup with a tablespoon of leftover lamb chopped into it and half a slice of bread and butter on the side.
Feel too full to move.
Now to get on with PAYE returns for the evening!

peplum no - I'm a total night owl.

mehefin · 15/04/2013 20:56

Hi peplum

I'm just having big plate of mushroom, tomato and an egg before work. Working with someone who did their 1st fast last week so expect lots of 5:2 talk through the night.

Southeastdweller · 15/04/2013 21:04

Welcome to the newbies today Smile

I'm fasting today too and had a terrible early evening. There were some cookies lying around at work around 4o'clock and I think because I was tired I wasn't thinking properly and had two, so that's 100 calories down the pan. 10 minutes later I had the loudest hunger pangs I've experienced for months that not even a gym session and pint of water could get rid of. Full up now after dinner and a decaff coffee but the two hour gap between the cookies and dinner was almost unbearable. Lesson learned for next time.

itsaboatjack Congrats on yesterday and you know what, I've been feeling inspired all day and may enrole on a half marathon or fun run for later this year.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 15/04/2013 21:21

Hello! I would love to join you all please Smile

I was on the original intermittent fasting thread about a year ago, and didn't carry it on. I started doing 6:1 about 6/8 weeks ago, was losing about 1lb a week, but had a week off for Easter, and had a stinking cold last week where all I wanted was carbs. Hey ho, start again now! Fast day today, survived from 7pm last night til 3pm today, started feeling a little sick and lightheaded at work so had some Belvitas. Omelette for dinner with a shedload of veg, and a treat size milky way to round it all off. Lots of tea today, should probably curb that.

I'm 5"6, weighed 10st 9.5 this morning. Think this is a bit of a false high, but hopefully should mean I see a big drop in the first few weeks Grin
My goal weight at the minute is 10 stone. My non-scale goal is to fit into a pair of jeans that are rather tight right now, want them to look loose.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 15/04/2013 21:22

Oh, and if anybody is on MFP, please feel free to add me, same name as here- I get a few loaded comments from friends on fast days, would appreciate others in the same boat!

bugsyburge · 15/04/2013 21:24

Eeeek well after a rocky start to the say I've made it through.... chicken salad for tea with a cup of tea: no sugar yet!! yay

Talkinpeace · 15/04/2013 21:29

breakout
I had colleagues teasing me with pasties mid morning - but I am slimmer than they are so neeeuuugghh!

Cuddledup · 15/04/2013 21:35

I can't believe it I've survived my first fast! Normally I'm famished by 10.30 and eating lunch by 1 and snacking by 3. Today - small bowl of porridge for breakfast, an apple for lunch and supper - which was probably far more than my allotted calories but DH had cooked me a nice meal so it would have be churlish to refuse his lovely beetroot and yogurt salad that goes brilliantly with salmon. On top of this I had a productive session at my new allotment after work. ALso no wine tonight so that's helped. BUT I did think about food an awful lot today......
Itsa many congrats on your marathon. Really inspiring.

Cuddledup · 15/04/2013 21:38

I weighed myself first thing this morning, then had a shower and did some dry skin brushing, then weighed myself again and I'd lost weight. BIZZARE ! Grin (Maybe all that dead skin was weighing me down !Hmm

happygolucky0 · 15/04/2013 21:59

Hi everyone is it ok to join you? I started doing some fasts a couple of weeks ago. I have been going around the 16 hours between eating. What is the difference in how long you don't eat? As I don't quite understand that bit.
Well done everyone who is quitting the sugar for two weeks. I don't think I could cope with my monthly without sugar. Will be following to see if there are any tips that help to deal with the cravings.

Dotty342kids · 15/04/2013 22:11

Thanks for support headintheclouds and hopefully your little "increase" is just silly scales and you'll be back to a nice low tomorrow!
Happygolucky (and all other newbies today), welcome!
You'll find loads of support and helpful info on here so look forward to hearing about all your successes over the next few weeks Grin
Just about managed fast day today though dinner was a very unsatisfactory home made soup. Normally, if I do say so myself, my soups are lovely but today's, well, it wasn't! But as it was very low cal I did have a good slab of sourdough baguette with it which made up for it slightly. Did sneak in a small piece of gingercake I shouldn't have but nothing too dreadful.
swallowedafly that's amazing - so you've done an entire fast with no cals at all? i'm super impressed!

Talkinpeace · 15/04/2013 22:25

happygolucky
Basically the longer you can go on a periodic fast - while still carrying on your normal life - the better.
I did 27 hours from yesterday tea to tonight supper. Tonights supper was just over 500 calories.
I'll not eat till tomorrow lunch. I'm used to it now. I do have white tea while fasting though (lots of it!)

Highschoolsweetheart · 15/04/2013 22:46

I'm new here so be gentle please. I would love to loose some weight, and this looks like something that I could do.

When some of you say your fasting you seam to all drink tea, but doesn't that have calories in it?

Is this WOL suitable for everyone?

happygolucky0 · 15/04/2013 22:49

Thank you for the welcome Dott342kids,
Ok cool Talkinpeace. Thanks for the reply. Well done on doing 27 hours!! Have you been doing this WOE very long? Just thinking I could work my way up to it. Are people getting better weight lose with doing 4.3?

Talkinpeace · 15/04/2013 22:49

Highschool
There are stuff all calories in tea and I use semi skim milk so 24 hours worth of tea is around 80 calories.
I should probably try a 'proper' fast but am rather a caffiene addict and black coffee makes me really ratty Wink

read the tips and hints and give it a go ....

postmanpatscat · 16/04/2013 06:18

Morning all :)

Good to see so many new 'faces' joining us.

Fast day for me yesterday and this morning I am down 100g, which still leaves me 600g heavier than my lowest weight last week! On the plus side, my body fat % is about 5% less than it was eight weeks ago.
