The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning everyone. Scales down to 76kg this morning after 2.5 weeks at 77.8kg - but that's after fasting Tuesday, Thurs and Fri this past week. So trying not to get my hopes up as I'm sure it'll bounce up on Monday (official weigh in day) after an eating weekend. Though I am determined to be careful what I eat!

Dawndonna · 13/04/2013 08:58

I changed my days this week and fasted on Monday and Friday, as I had a meeting in a nice cafe on Thursday. I managed to lose 4lbs. I'm a happy bunny. Just need to be sensible over the weekend, now.

BetsyVanBell · 13/04/2013 09:16

monster It kills your brain cells for one thing, also makes your body eat more to try and get hold of the energy it thinks it's getting from the sweetness. Bread&Wine put a link to a video on the tips & links thread - here disclaimer - I haven't actually watched it as I already know enough of the horrors and don't drink 'diet' drinks generally! But feedback suggests it's worth a watch if you're trying to kick an addiction. I suspect your symptoms could well be aspartame related although many people report similar issues when starting out on this WOE and they always settle down after a bit.

ELR I'll put raw cauli & humus on the menu!

swallowedAfly · 13/04/2013 09:41

B&W congratulations - such a relief when that scan is done and you start feeling the baby moving all the time and it all feels a lot more real Smile

was a bit hmpf about my maintained gain yesterday so decided i would leave it now till monday. i don't want to get into the resentful stage. anyway today it's down from 11.1.8 to 11.1 bang on for no reason i can ascertain. the tens are looking a long way off again but have to hope if i keep going and next week is more active and back in routine again i should get there.

i don't drink diet drinks - i actively believe aspartame is bad for you not least because they taste like antifreeze to me and give me stomach pain.

swallowedAfly · 13/04/2013 09:42

oh and i had a skipping rope arrive in the post today - going to see if i can incorporate a bit of that into my day.

monster54 · 13/04/2013 09:54

Thanks bvb...I'm going in to week 8 of this WOL and only just getting tummy trouble so I'm inclined to think it was the aspartame withdrawal.

I had in sweetner in my tea as opposed to diet drink. Maybe 20/30 sweetners a day to cold turkey!!

I will try and find the video. Thank you!!

ellenbrody · 13/04/2013 10:04

I'm pleased to report that I think 6:1, with a couple of 16:8's thrown in is good for maintenance.
Steady at 8 stone Smile.
I've been 'gluten loading' before my biopsy, which is not making me feel well, however, a positive effect is: if I see another millionaires shortbread again I will scream! (Previously my fave food!!)

Good luck to today's fasters, enjoy your weekend.

Breadandwine · 13/04/2013 11:02

Thanks, folks, it's certainly a good feeling. One of my former students introduced her baby to bread dough at 4.5 months!

So I reckon, in about 9 months, I'll be doing the same! Grin

I've just started a new thread, here for anyone who is maintaining their weight. It's the natural progression for everyone on here - so, as soon as you're at or near your goal weight, come and join us.

We absolutely thrive on new members! Grin

kiwidreamer · 13/04/2013 13:04

Second week done, three fasts tho maybe 50/80 cals above 500 on one of the fasts... have maintained the same weight as last week. Bah.

Ah well its not the end of the world but its a bit miserable barely eating for three whole days and not losing any weight but carry on I shall. At least next week with kids back at school I'll be exercising a lot more, this week was just once so not great but that's why I threw in an extra fast!!!!

Funny thing is I felt so bad on my non fast days when I ate any bread or heavy food I actually turned down a Fast Food lunch today and will have cheese and crackers, still a treat of sorts but nothing like 'old macdonalds' as its known in our house Wink

postmanpatscat · 13/04/2013 13:07

Quick hello...no particular news here, though I might manage a not at all subtle brag about my first week with Fitbit - should be about 65km covered this week by the end of today and about 85,000 steps in total Grin

Back at work on Monday though so don't know what impact that will have.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

BetsyVanBell · 13/04/2013 14:50

monster Sorry, posted up a dead link. The film is called Hungry For Change and the bit discussing aspartame was with Dr Christiane Northrup - there might be the relevant bit on you tube...

Dotty342kids · 13/04/2013 15:55

Just wanted to share with you all that this is definitely resulting in tummy shrinkage! I've been stuck, weightwise, for about 4 weeks now, fluctuating between 11st 3 to 11st 0 (and dying to see the elusive "10).
However, what I am definitely seeing is a much less bloated, less solid tummy. As an apple shape, it's all on my tummy but there's definitely less of it Grin.
Today, I went out and bought a fab clingy (always avoid clingy fabrics normally) leopard print dress and I feel really good in it!
Love this WOE!!

aroomofherown · 13/04/2013 16:56

I had a fail fast day yesterday like minimammoth - held fine all day, then met up with boyf in the evening and ended up eating pizza and drinking red wine. I've only just started using MFP so am getting used to what my TDEE actually looks and feels like - will fast again on Monday and hopefully that will be fine and I'll be back on it.

BsshBossh · 13/04/2013 19:46

Dotty me too with the tummy shrinkage. Have maintained 4 lbs from goal for 3 weeks but my tummy has gone down another notch and my thighs are leaner. A friend who hasn't seen me in a month commented on how much slimmer I look but since I last saw her I was only couple of lbs heavier!

I am a big believer that fasting for long periods burns fat and that as the weeks go by our bodies burn fat more efficiently. I lost most of my weight last year pre-fasting WOE but have lost most of my tummy post-fasting WOE (22/23 hr fasts).

NurseEzzzaChapel · 13/04/2013 19:49

muriwai, glad to have lured someone out of lurking! Welcome aboard. Smile

peplum41, I didn?t check the kcal count but I know from previous visits to MFP that it will be something horrendous! Never mind, had a good fast on Tuesday and another good one today.

Congratulations frenchfancy and to your DH. I?m really looking forward to hitting target but I think it?ll be a few months yet.

BetsyVanBell · 13/04/2013 20:27

BsshBossh Dotty* Agreed. Tummy shrinkage has come via IF and not with general weightloss. And my fasts have generally been 18 hours and not very strict with the 500cals either!

NurseEzzzaChapel · 13/04/2013 21:00

Well after the Nutella woopsy on Thursday I'm coming to the end of a successful fast day now, though I have been torturing myself with this all afternoon. Guess what I'll be making tomorrow! Grin

monster54 · 13/04/2013 21:22

No worries bvb will try and find it...just interesting to hear other peoples experiences!!

Hmmmmm well done nurse they look amazing!!!

WhitingLikeTheFish · 13/04/2013 21:43

10 fasts and 10.25 lbs lost - just like MM says. Even my father in law noticed that I've lost weight! I had stuck for 3 weeks after an initial quick 6lb loss - then this week 1 lb dropped after 1st fast then 3lbs from the 2nd weekly fast. Funnily enough my DD (living with BF) did exactly the same. Guess I just wanted to say stick with it if your weight loss is stuck. It will drop off just might not be when you expect it.

smelmalamp · 13/04/2013 21:51

Good evening. I'd like to join your lovely thread!

I started this .WOE on 17th March and have managed to lose 5 lb so far. Think i would be happy to lose a stone in all. I'm under 5 foot so feels like a lot to me. Coming to the end of my 9th fast. Looking forward to a tasty breakfast! [Smile]

smelmalamp · 13/04/2013 21:52

Ha Smile

smelmalamp · 13/04/2013 21:54

Can anyone recommend times to weigh myself. Think i'm doing it too often!

Breadandwine · 14/04/2013 01:32

Welcome, smelmalamp - once a week, after your second fast, same time of day. Smile

Betsy and monster if you google 'Hungry for change' you'll get the first 20 minutes of the film free - then you have to pay.

But here's Dr Briffa on artificial sweeteners:

www.drbriffa.com/2012/12/21/artificial-sweeteners-found-to-boost-weight-gain-in-animals/

akarucker · 14/04/2013 07:40

Oh no! I switched from ADF (which I've been doing for about 8 weeks), to 4:3 this week, with the aim of moving to 5:2 within another month or so. Well, just a week of 4:3 and my weigh in shows a 4lb gain!!!

I'm heavier than most of you (15st 5'9"), so probably safe to say I have more 'food issues' which have led me to this weight. ADF was working...slowly, but I didn't see that I could sustain it long term, but could probably manage 5:2 long term. Obviously I was wrong. My mindset is still that of starve/binge, as I haven't known what 'normal' eating is for years. My TDEE is around 2000, which I know is plenty, but for me, very hard to stick to.

So, I guess it's back to ADF for another couple of months, in the hope that sooner or later I will be able to control myself more!

I'm aware that this woe is not for people with food issues. I'm not sure if that's me! I do enjoy this woe and I'm losing about 1lb a week (ADF). I know it should be more for ADF but I'm ok with it, as I'm able to really enjoy my eating days. I wish I could be more 'normal' in my eat days, but really don't feel I'm there. I'm just not sure how long I can manage ADF for, as it has quite an impact on family life.

BsshBossh · 14/04/2013 07:45

Morning everyone! Has anyone here tried a 36 hour fast and if so have you repeated it? I do 23 hour fasts but have recently wondered whether I eat at the end of that out of habit as by that time I'm not actually hungry. I would imagine the health benefits would be really good and I would break the fast with normal eating the next morning... Peoples' experiences of this would be helpful as I plan out my fasting week.
