The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I didn't, and am still not, making brownies today. I consider this an achievement of sorts. I have had half a bottle of wine though Grin

BetsyVanBell · 12/04/2013 20:10

...and there's still time to eat the chocolate of course...

Cuddledup · 12/04/2013 20:27

Quick question.... is the 5:2 for me? I'm a normal weight for my height but I have a big bum, fat / cellulite ridden thighs, a sugar addiction, and poor skin plus I'm perimenopausal. Would the 5:2 be suitable for someone who is already a healthy weight but just wants a more even distribution of their weight? (I don't want to buy the book and then read that it's not suitable)

Southeastdweller · 12/04/2013 20:36

Two pounds off this 4:3 week so that's 12 pounds in total over 11 weeks which I'm delighted about. I've got a stone to go and I've decided to carry on doing 4:3 for a month then reassess. 4:3 has been surprisingly easy and I recommend doing it if you've had a bad week.

Hope everyone enjoys their weekends.

BetsyVanBell · 12/04/2013 20:46

cuddleup yes, I am similar and thighs are reducing, skin is improved and sugar addiction is more in control - provisos are that you eat healthier generally though, not just reduce calories 2 days a week and eat junk the rest of the time. If you're prepared to embrace a new way of eating then this is for you. Many of us have found that we now crave less crap and actively seek out more nutritionally dense food since starting IF.

HTH

WhitingLikeTheFish · 12/04/2013 20:51

I'm not ready to 4:3 yet but am keeping it as something to try when it gets nearer holiday time - August. If I try it too soon I worry I might find it too tough and wobble. Fast day no 10 today. Always manage well without breakfast and up till lunch then like lots as soon as I eat I feel famished. Manage to get through to tea time but oh it's a long old evening.
If I count from 10pm last night through till 10am tomorrow that's a 48hour period on 500 cals (478) that's not the same as folk who do the overnight fasting is it. Or am I supposed to allow myself something to eat at 10pm of my fast day? Confused

BetsyVanBell · 12/04/2013 20:53

SED Fab result! I've been doing this about 3 months as well and it really does just get easier :)

ps I didn't eat the chocolate. Going to make myself a crappy orange Options mixed with barley cup instead - 30ish cals and I'm not even on a fast day! I don't normally condone aspartame laced drinks but it helps when I'm fighting (post-holiday/Easter based) sugar cravings - seems to satisfy without prolonging the sugar addiction.

WhitingLikeTheFish · 12/04/2013 20:59

Anyone else watching The Masters - good to have something to while away the fasting hours.
8lbs lost after 9 fasts, hoping to drop a little more by tomorrow morning. Nice to know my weight loss is v typical.
DH returns from business trip tomorrow - did 2 fast days then missed a week - then 1 fast and gave up on his 4th attempt. I'm overweight and need to do this, he's obese and has diabetes and high cholesterol in the family. He's gonna take some convincing - anyone else had difficulties in this area?

BetsyVanBell · 12/04/2013 20:59

WLF That's a very decent fast - I usually have last meal around 6.30pm then nothing till lunch next day when I split calories between lunch (1pm) and evening meal (6pm), then have a normal breakfast next day. If it's not a work day then I can last till 4 or 5pm (sometimes). Does that help? It's been written up better on the tips and links thread (link in OP)! There's no rules as to when you eat the 500 cals, that's up to you and what suits you best. Lots of people like to eat them as late as possible to eat 1 bigger meal and go to bed with a full stomach.

PoshVoice · 12/04/2013 21:00

Weekly weigh in this morning, 67.3 kg so a loss of 0.4, BMI is now 25.5 aft being 28.7 before I started this wol (01/01/13)

Weight loss does seem to be slowing so hopefully I'll below 25 by the end of may.

Target of 23.5 before the stone roses gig in Glasgow in mid June is still on!!

Meeting my sister on Tuesday so will move my fast days to Monday and Wednesday this week, love the way this 5:2 thing is so flexible!!

Good luck to all today's fasters.

PoshVoice · 12/04/2013 21:03

Damn meant 76.3 not 67.3.. All other stats are ok though

(Memo to self : Use Preview god dammit!)

Southeastdweller · 12/04/2013 21:06

Thanks betsy.

It was greeneggs and then me who were raving about raw broccoli and houmous. I was Hmm at first but really enjoy it, with a sprinkling of dried chilli seeds. Another bonus is that it takes me relatively ages to eat.

BetsyVanBell · 12/04/2013 21:11

SED When I ate the raw broc and houmous and combo I'd been fasting for 20 or so hours so it was like nectar of the gods! Thanks for the tip Grin

Great results so far PV!

Cuddledup · 12/04/2013 21:21

Betsy thanks v much for your advice. I'll consider about giving the 5:2 a go.

WhitingLikeTheFish · 12/04/2013 21:24

BVB thanks you're doing even longer than me. I like that last cuppa before bed the night before a fast and occasionally a yog or fruit as long as I the cals are within the MFP daily goal.

sweetkitty · 12/04/2013 22:01

Marceline - I'm healthy BMI and wanted to lose 5lbs, I've lost 4lbs so far in 3 weeks and I've not stuck to 500 cals on fast days.

I had a mini fast today, no breakfast, 19 hours fast, sandwich for lunch then big dinner.

ELR · 12/04/2013 22:02

betsy try raw cauliflower with houmous nic that is food of the gods!

ELR · 12/04/2013 22:02

Supposed to say now not nic!

Breadandwine · 13/04/2013 00:40

Hi folks

Just wanted to tell you all that my daughter has today had her 20 week scan - and the baby is absolutely fine. So now we can relax and start planning for the birth! Smile Smile

Cuddledup since this is a Way of Life (WOL) and not a diet, it is for everyone. There are many health benefits to be gained by fasting, unconnected (as far as we know) to our weight.

As for 'normal weight' no-one really knows what that is. When I began, I thought, at 10.10 give or take, I had 2 or 3 pounds to lose. 6 months later I was at 9.2 - so I lost a stone and a half, without even trying. Now I'm maintaining that weight and I feel as good as I have ever done in my life!

So I'd join Betsy in saying, give it a go!

marceline · 13/04/2013 01:41

Thanks sweetkitty, that sounds really good. I'm going to stick with it for a few weeks and see what happens.

storminabuttercup · 13/04/2013 07:24

Good morning fellow IF'ers

After the really weird 7lb gain this week I was determined to have a brilliant fast day, I managed 24 hours then had only my 500 cals.

It's not the fasts I'm struggling with though its keeping to my TDDE, for example today I will have a takeaway as we have friends coming, so a non creamy curry and 3 chappati takes me to around 1200 calories. I'm on
A 12 hour shift at work and have two small granary rolls with cheese and carrot so I estimate that as 500 cals which doesn't seem like a lot of food and I've not got many calories left, certainly not enough for a decent breakfast. Hmm

monster54 · 13/04/2013 07:26

bvb what do you know about aspartame?!?

I've recently gone cold turkey after a very heavily laden diet...

Headaches, nausea, digestion problems...urrrrgggghhhh! I can't connect this to anything other than 5:2 or aspartame??

Anyone any help/experience??

BsshBossh · 13/04/2013 07:57

Breadandwine that's wonderful news :)

Minimammoth · 13/04/2013 08:23

Fast sort of failed yesterday after holding goo all day ended up with pub fish n chips. So scales up 2lbs this morning

Minimammoth · 13/04/2013 08:23
