The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Just a little 0.5lb for me....which is a little disappointing with my extra sneaky in....but hey this is also my time of cycle to be sticking....

In NSV...saw some friends last night I hadn't seen in a couple of months and all commented on how much weight I'd lost!!!

monster54 · 12/04/2013 07:38

Hoooray french that's amazing! I'm aiming for that illusive 10!!! I don't know what I'll do if I ever get to see it!!

Prawntoast · 12/04/2013 07:46

well done french! I am aiming to get into the 9's, though at the rate I'm losing it might be about September before I see that! Lost 200gs, this week, still keep telling myself that's nearly half a pound in old money. I think I may try and cut down on the wine a bit, I will give the "drink the wine out of a champagne flute" a go and see if that cuts down consumption, or maybe I'll just drink champagne Grin.

storminabuttercup · 12/04/2013 07:52

Life has kept me too busy to keep up with this.

Well done to all the losers

I've been weighed this morning and have bizarrely put on 7lb. I'm feeling really disheartened. I mean 7lb? Hmm Today is a fast day so I guess that's the motivation I need to make sure I stick to it. Last week I was ill and didn't fast but I did an amazing 26 hour fast.

I think I now need to be much stricter on feast days.

Still feel Hmm though

BetsyVanBell · 12/04/2013 08:10

Whoop FF! Flowers Fabulous news :)

Well fast day ended not excellently yesterday - there may have been a helping or two of nuts and raisins to take me well over the 500 cals (not sure if I've ever actually managed to stick to 500 though) but really not moving all day doesn't leave me much leeway for feed days! 1 of my 2 extra lbs has gone now at least, but it'll most likely go back on today, and possibly more over the weekend.

Maybe I just shouldn't worry about it and wait till we're all back in our normal routine. Given that I was expecting to be several pounds up post-holiday I'm in a better place than I should be.

Rambling post!

BsshBossh · 12/04/2013 08:10

Morning! Official weigh in today and have stayed the same for the 3rd week running. I think my body wants to get used to this weight for a while. So as I'm only a few lbs away from goal I'm just going to let myself get used to being this new shape and size; try and enjoy it whilst still continuing to fast twice a week etc.

Going to start weight training today to mix in with my usual cardio. Looking forward to that.

frenchfancy that's fantastic news!

swallowedAfly · 12/04/2013 08:13

morning - congratulations french Smile

feeling a little disheartened here too. 11.1.8 again today. no i didn't end up fasting yesterday but it was my third fast anyway and i didn't eat till 7pm and then ate no more than tdee.

so yesterdays seemingly random 4.4lbs up is still there. ho hum.

thanks for reassurance itsaboat. can only hope back to work helps.

BetsyVanBell · 12/04/2013 08:22

storm Maybe try for some non scale victories - is there anything lurking in your wardrobe that you optimistically purchased with a smaller body in mind that you could try on? The scales can definitely be misleading as they don't care about water retention etc.

Being ill certainly won't have helped. Are you feeling better now? Are you able to go out for a long walk or other low impact exercise today? I know that not getting my usual levels of exercise are disastrous for me in terms of weight loss, and it makes me feel lethargic too.

Good luck with your fast today :)

ELR · 12/04/2013 08:25

frenchfancy yippeeee! Well done bet you are pleased.

Well after my fast and a gain of 2lbs yesterday, I am back down to what I was last Friday. So this week I have only maintained and the previous week I only lost 1/4 of a pound. Like you bssh my body must be getting used to this new weight.
So in 16 fasts 8 weeks I have lost 8lbs, exactly the normal average!
I can't really complain as in between fasts whilst not over eating a great deal I have not really been watching what I eat and have had plenty of meals outs, treats, G&T's and wine! Also not really been exercising either.

storminabuttercup · 12/04/2013 08:35

Thank you betsy. I'm not completely better but I'm well enough to feel ready to fast. To be honest I'm a bit bloated so daren't try even my normal jeans! That could be a reason for the gain. Lots of water today and I think I will go for alot of veggies for tea to 'get things moving' iyswim?

Thank you for the encouragement

frenchfancy · 12/04/2013 08:37

Thanks everyone. I started 5:2 in September, so it hasn't been the quickest loss ever, but I haven't been deprived, I put on weight over xmas, but getting it off again was easy. The last few lbs have taken a while, but I am confident that I can keep it off now forever. There is no sense of - I've finished my diet so now I can eat. (but I might have some peanuts with my Friday night beer Grin).

Bramblesinafield · 12/04/2013 09:10

Congratulations ff, inspiring!

Last couple of days of holiday here then away on business - waistbands don't feel too bad but really must avoid the scales on return!

Dotty342kids · 12/04/2013 09:48

frenchfancy that really is brilliant though. I bet you look so different to six months ago! And also really good to hear that there's no sense of "phew, it's over, back to eating normally". I am nowhere near target yet but feel like this is a completely long term way of eating.
swallowedafly, don't be disheartened, it's just a "bounce" and you'll be seeing the 10's again soon I'm sure.
Today, after fasting yesterday, I was back hovering between 11st and 11st 1 so I'm not in the 10's yet either.
But I do feel (and my husband tells me that i feel it to him too!) much smaller round the tummy area. I'm an apple shape so always have a big tum but it is much flatter. I'm even in leggings and a tunic top today which is unheard of for me!
Might chuck in another fast tomorrow as seven days till the big 40!

headintheclouds · 12/04/2013 09:50

well done french what an amazing achievement.
Well after my little Easter blip of doing 6:1 ( put on 2lbs) it was back to work and normal 5:2 for me this week. Have had a good week and was very happy to see the scales at10 st 7lbs this morning after 2nd fast.- so lost the Easter gain plus a little more.
So for me thats 11 weeks and 9 lbs off in total.im apple shaped and carry my weight on by abdomen,so Ive been measuring my waist and 4.5 inches off my waist so far( it was a thick one to start off with).
have a great weekend all..

marceline · 12/04/2013 10:04

I've just started the 5:2 diet last week, I found the research very interesting and would like to adopt it as a long term change. I'm just a little discouraged that I have not lost an ounce at the end of my first week. I'm a healthy BMI and only have about 6 lb to lose. I am not expecting the weight to just fall off but I was hoping for at least a pound. Hmm Please tell me it's worth sticking with it.

postmanpatscat · 12/04/2013 10:14

marceline stick with it. My BMI was 23 something to start with and I aim to lose 17lbs, I've lost 14lbs in 8 weeks. I log all my food and I workout 3-4 times/week.

SaltyandSweet · 12/04/2013 10:24

On my third fast of the week, a consecutive one today. I've not weighed myself, waiting for tomorrow in the hopes that I'll finally see a shift in numbers after being stuck at 77.8kgs (12.2 stone) for 2.5weeks. I don't know why I've been stuck for so long! I'm 5'9 and started this WOE at 84 kgs (13.2 stone) about 8 weeks ago. I lost the stone very fast but then everything seems to have come to a screeching halt Sad Hope it starts up again though I'm trying to concentrate on the health benefits in the meantime!

sausages51 · 12/04/2013 11:21

Kiwi the end of your post made me laugh out loud about the paracetamol and getting over yourself. Priceless. :-)

bugsyburge · 12/04/2013 11:54

fast day here today....aiming to get to 7pm before I eat.... just need to get through work & a spin class now!! I'm hoping this mystery 2lbs doesn't make its way onto my scales tonight!!!!

aroomofherown · 12/04/2013 13:05

Fast day here today - have been out to dinner/drinks the last two days and been clocking everything up on MFP: ouch! I have averaged 2500 each the last two days Blush

Haven't weighed myself but I might drag myself off to the gym for Session 4 this week. Am up to running 3km now (haven't run since London marathon in 2011 due to injury so this is a pleasing development). I went shopping this morning for an outfit for an interview next week because none of my 'posh' clothes fit me anymore and I'm size 18! Gah, what has happened to me?

Congrats ff that's really inspiring, and postmanpatscat I'd be dead chuffed to have lost 14lbs in 8 weeks, congrats!

Mrsrobertduvall · 12/04/2013 15:41

I am beginning next week...have just bought the book, booked a holiday for August and want to lose the 10 lbs which have crept on round the middle.
Oh the joy of menopause. Also joining local gym having given up one further away at Christmas. Although I'm doing Jillian Michael 3-4 times a week, I need more cardio.
Dh is joining in too.

ELR · 12/04/2013 16:40

Good luck & welcome mrsd
10lbs by August is achievable you may find that your DH does better than you! For some reason our DH that have done it alongside us have lost more.

mamamoomin2 · 12/04/2013 16:42

Well done ff! Awesome stuff :)

On my third fast this week and they've all gone well.....target here I come! One day.... :)

greenfig · 12/04/2013 17:48

Waves banner well done FF !!
Just what we all need to keep up the motivation Smile
akaruka I'm just like you busily planning the next days meals!
Post fast day today & been madly busy. Only had 300 cals max all day & not at all hungry but fish pie to look forward to later & hopefully a glass of something hangover free... fingers xed!

Mrsrobertduvall · 12/04/2013 19:50

Wellmdh has more to lose....Grin
