The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I try to prepare our tea whilst the kids sit and eat theirs. My flaw is slightly overestimating what they actually need so there is always "spare". Trying very hard to crack that habit!

monster54 · 11/04/2013 19:05

So after all my moaning yesterday...I've had nothing all day and having a spur of the moment extra fast!!

How does that work? I was so miserable yesterday and so close to giving up. I wasn't at all hungry when I woke up and just powered on through the rest of the day!!!! Having a nice healthy dins around 600cals!

Yay me!

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 19:20

WEll done monster!

monster54 · 11/04/2013 19:46

Thanks dotty although sneaky weigh in I think I might be in the 2lb brigade!! Arrrrhhhhh!!!

Toofattooold · 11/04/2013 20:20

Ha ha! Dotty your post about conveniently cooking too much for the children and then having to eat the leftovers is exactly what I do! It's a habit I desperately need to kick!

BsshBossh · 11/04/2013 20:27

kiwi I don't scoff off DD's plate on fast days - it simply goes straight into the food composting caddy and then to the council Grin. But I love nibbling on her leftovers on non-fast days - she eats at 5pm so I count her leftovers as my snack (that is, I account for it as part of my TDEE). So far it's been fine in terms of weight loss

BsshBossh · 11/04/2013 20:30

Yey monster you're becoming a fasting pro!

akarucker · 11/04/2013 20:42

Yay, I made it to 20 hours today! Love achieving these mini goals. Really hope the Friday morning scales are kind to me in the morning. Sitting here planning my massive breakfast - in reality I won't fancy it, but I like to fantasize about the food I'm allowed the day after a fast. Sometimes I talk about it so much, my dh gets so excited at the prospect of (say) a massive fry up in the morning, and then gets all upset that I've got him excited over nothing, because I wake up and fancy grape nuts instead! Haha, don't blame me...I'm the one who had soup for dinner, whilst the family tucked into giant bowls of pasta!!

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 20:49

bloody hell - today ended up not being a fast after it all went disastrously wrong very late on. i made it to nearly 7pm on no food and still managed to mess it up.

ellenbrody · 11/04/2013 20:56

b&w thanks for the blog link, interesting reading.

Managed 16 hours today, then a sort of mini fast of normal lunch & dinner etc 1200 cals.
I thought I'd try this and one proper 500 fast, and see how that goes for maintaining.

BsshBossh · 11/04/2013 21:14

23 hours and about to break my fast. Yeehhaaaaar!

PoshVoice · 11/04/2013 21:42

Enjoy bsshbossh!

I always find the meal you break your fast with always seems to taste amazing!

Second and last day of the week for me, again I didn't really notice it (can't remember the last time I felt hungry nowadays).

Really tempted to try a proper fast, not a less than 500 day after reading this thread.

Roll on tomorrow midday for a beer and a pork and stuffing burger!

sweetkitty · 11/04/2013 21:51

Hello fellow fasters well I wasn't fasting today, WiiFit weight maintained today, I had a good look through my weights as well, the heaviest I was on there was about this time last year 9st 5lbs, am 8st 7 just now. My heaviest weight ever was just before I got pregnant with DD1 10st 2lbs size 12-14. It looked awful on me, very small boned tiny arms and legs.

I can't keep up with this thread but loving all the fantastic weight loss stories.

Paintingrainbowskies · 11/04/2013 22:22

kiwi I either have a cup of stock as a drink while my little one eats or I chew sugar free gum! You don't want to put food in your mouth while you chew!

End of another successful fast, did 23 hours with just liquids then broke my fast with a delish dahl with roasted cod and a drizzle of yoghurt sauce - blooming lovely!

Just baked a loaf of whole meal bread and haven't touched any - willpower! Grin

I'm giving blood in the morning so I will definitely have some bread for breakfast and I'm looking forward to it.

WhitingLikeTheFish · 11/04/2013 22:39

Looking forward to fasting tomorrow. After Tuesday - fast no. 9 I finally lost a much needed lb. I've been waiting for that since week 2. So that makes 8lbs in 5 weeks. Slow but I can live with that.
I also like exercising on fast days. Don't feel any negative effects - just a little empty.
Will check on tomorrow for some words of wisdom - so glad I found you all. Thanks :)

plecofjustice · 11/04/2013 23:27

Well, I might have had a 2lb gain, but just been trying on some of my tormentor clothes, you know, the ones you never quite fit into, don't know why you bought and keep just to punish yourself when you can't get into them...

And they all fit! Ok, so I wouldn't necessarily go out in some of them, but the zips do up and I don't look like a complete heifer, so I must be on the right track somewhere!

ELR · 11/04/2013 23:43

Woohoo plec it's great when that happens I have a few things hanging around in my wardrobe for just that reason!
Just come back from the cinema. I took dd to see the host she had popcorn a slushie and a twirl and I'm pleased to say i didnt knick any of her food. I had a fizzy water and two of those mikado sticks 11 calories each!
Just had a lovely cup of tea and now off to bed. Fingers crossed and hoping for a loss in the morning.

Prawntoast · 11/04/2013 23:52

plec it's a good feeling. I bought some jeans from the Gap a few weeks ago, they would only go half way up my thighs when I first tried them on, I can do the zip up now, I can't bend over in them mind you, but one day I will be able to!

Itsaboatjack · 12/04/2013 01:51

saf, try not to sweat it. Next week you will be back in normal routine so it will all be much easier again.

I love those feelings when clothes fit again. I had a pair of skinny jeans from Gap that I bought in the sale January last year that I have never fit into. Last weekend I was looking through my wardrobe for something to wear for a night out and came across them. I eyed them up and thought they were still a way off fitting but thought I'd just try them on to see how far away they were and they fit - comfortably! I ended up wearing them out. It's like going on a shopping trip with all the new old clothes I am rediscovering and now fitting into.

It was an eating day for me today and I came close to having a bit of a binge in the evening but was able, with the help of reading these threads, to not give into it. Mini victory for me as evenings is my really weak time normally.

So it would normally be a fast day for me tomorrow but I am doing a half marathon on Sunday so I was thinking it might not be a good idea. I was thinking maybe I'll do a mini fast until dinner and then have a proper dinner with carbs and then carb load a bit more on Saturday. If anyone has any thoughts on that I'd be grateful to hear them.

peplum41 · 12/04/2013 05:20

Hi fellow 5:2ers, just reporting in from a night shift, fast commenced at 12:30 am. Ok so far. Excuse waffling, have only rubbish tv and a dripping tap for company!

ezza chuckled to self when read about your nutella savaging. Have you checked its cal content? Viscous beast.

kiwi couldn't handle other clashing fasters, how draining.

itsaboatjack although not a runner, I do walk at least 1.5 hours a day plus very hilly here. I've noticed that on a fast day and the day after before I've eaten its all I can do to plod. Whereas after a couple of feed days, I can really charge along. Aiming to start running when I hit the low elevens, currently low 12s, in the mean time working on toning core and legs. Hope you enjoy your half marathon.
As for all this 2lbs business, I've switched my scales over to kg , they can bounce all they like, its meaningless to me. I feel a bit fatter though in kilos.

frenchfancy · 12/04/2013 06:34

I've done it!Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

I've hit target Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

After several weeks of hovering just above 68kg this morning I am 67.0kg (10st7). I've lost 13kg overall (2 stones) and I feel (and look) great.

DH has also hit target so lots of Grin Grin Grin Grin round here.

akarucker · 12/04/2013 06:49
