The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I've been hovering between 10st11 and 10st12 ever since I got back from China over a month ago, which was doubly Sad given that the Chinese scales told fibs and led me to believe I was 10st8 Angry. Had glimpsed a low during the week of 10st10.4 but it went back up to 10st11.4 for my official weigh day weigh in. [sigh]

So I was really pleased when yesterday morning (admittedly after a fast day: official weigh in is after two non-fast days in a row) I glimpsed 10st9.6, an all time low (since starting this WoE anyway). I went for a run before breakfast so jumped back on the scales to see 10st9.2 which made me Grin but I didn't take it seriously as I'm always my lightest after a run. This morning though, after a non-fast day (which included a disproportionate amount of chocolate) the scales said 10st9.2 again. Hmm Grin I'm sure it'll bounce back up again but I'm hoping this is a sign that the weight is on the way down again.

Saf, your first 10 stone something post made me smile. Smile

BsshBossh · 11/04/2013 14:22

saf isn't it also your TOM week. That might account for the gain, in addition to the salt/water retention from the Chinese. Fast today but don't weigh today - wait until first thing tomorrow morning.

I am Confused at all the 2lbs up. Doesn't bode well for my own weigh in tomorrow Shock.

Oh well, on a fast day and feeling really good and positive. Will try not to think about tomorrow's weigh in!

Toofattooold · 11/04/2013 14:27

Thanks Greenfig - hoping to be able to change the first part of my name in a few months. Think I'm definitely stuck with the too old part though!

wohmum · 11/04/2013 14:31

postmanpat the fitbit works on changes in altitude whilst stepping, so you may well have gone up 17 floors, even if not actual flights of stairs.

I've had once since Jan and I love it- have lost around 20lb thru a combination of 5:2 and increased activity due to fitty. I have set my target steps to 11,000 per day and aim to make it every day- even if that has me pacing the living room during ad breaks on tv!

We've got a small group on the fitbit community forum if you want to find us.

jubbablub · 11/04/2013 14:34

First fast day is today! I can't believe how easy I am finding it. Have gone for the recipes in the book that involve no cooking as my OH isn't doing it so want something dead easy!

Whoever mentioned the hairy bikers book thank you, it's cheapo on the kindle at the moment and lots of good sub-300 options!

Does anyone else exercise when fasting, tempted to try this but want to make sure that I won't faint first.

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 14:50

Lols, just been sent ths hilarious recipe link - really is anyone going to fanny about making Lavender ice cream with a parsnip tuile baskets when they're trying to stay out of the tempting kitchen?! Or a massive cake!

I'll save the dinner party food for when I'm not fasting thanks...

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 14:53

jubblablub I prefer to exercise on my fast days - staves off hunger, makes me feel super-virtuous and is more effective at fat burning than exercise when recently fed.

Today, however, I've been mostly lazing around on the sofa... gotta mix it up right? Wink

Well done on your first fast - the fear of it is far worse than the reality!

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 14:57

jubbalub I too tend to prefer exercising on fast days. Mainly because I go to an exercise class at 9.30 after dropping kids off. By the time I exercise, cool down and shower afterwards that's a good 2-3 hrs of fasting time when I've been occupied and not thinking about food!
Occasionally I do a teatime class on a fast day which again, gets me through that last hr or two before eating.
Don't find it makes any difference to energy levels and I do quite a high intensity class.

BsshBossh · 11/04/2013 15:06

I'm another one who exercises in a fasted state with no problems. If I do two fast days in a row then I find it difficult but if I exercise following a non-fast day then I'm fine. I think exercising in a fasted state uses up glycogen stores more quickly so you can start burning fat stores more quickly.

ElizaCBennett · 11/04/2013 15:56

I too am up 2lb this morning after two good fast days this week, so frustrating! Hoping this is just a bounce, no reason why it shouldn't be really, but me and my fat have been together so long it probably doesn't want to leave me.

Maybe a Yoni Massage would help!!!

Missenglish · 11/04/2013 16:10

Hi All!

I lost three stone since august last year and I feel amazing! Lots of my friends and family have asked how I have done it so I have put together a blog ( formerfatgirlsdiary.blogspot.co.uk/ )

Anyway, my focus is on normal and achievable tips and tricks to help people lost weight and to inspire and motivate them. Do you have any ideas I could share on my blog?

Thanks,

FormerFatGirl

NurseEzzzaChapel · 11/04/2013 16:25

Fast day today, or at least it was supposed to be until the Nutella Prison Break Incident. Blush

I was doing really well until the nutella jar fell out of the cupboard, which I think was a diversion to allow two pieces of bread to make their escape from the freezer and hide in the toaster until the coast was clear. Just as the bread was coming out of the toaster to make a dash for its next hiding place (not a very good one: a plate) the nutella jar took off its cap, grabbed a knife, stabbed itself and then smeared itself all over the toast. This seemed to enrage the toast because then it just flew at me repeatedly. I?m not a violent person but I had to defend myself didn?t I? Well what could I do? I wasn?t armed. So, I had to just keep biting my attacker, until it finally stopped. Blush

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 16:42

It's a tragic tale ezzza Grin

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 17:15

Oh Ezzza, how traumatic. I hope you are not too scarred by this incident and that the offending Nutella is now back under lock and key Smile

frenchfancy · 11/04/2013 17:18

ezzza Grin

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 17:29

hate it when that happens ezzza!

so far just water and coffee. softplay was a good distraction not least my shock at them having the gall to ask me for £2.35 for a cup of instant nescafe - their coffee machine is broken and they were charging the same prices for instant Shock i couldn't contain my disbelief and got mine discounted marginally.

not sure how i'm feeling about the zero food idea. i'm ok for now i think but we shall see. might weigh myself again for motivation but i am now convinced there is some kind of weird lunar event going on effecting gravity and making all of our scales LIE outrageously.

bvb - good mixing it up strategy. sofa days are essential for keeping the body guessing i'm told.

Laska42 · 11/04/2013 17:44

Ezzza thats so funny, you should write sketches..

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 17:46

Was it someone on here eulogising about raw broccoli with humus? I was sceptical but just found myself chopping broc whilst eyeing up the tahini-chickpea goodness. Fast now broken and a much depleted humus tub better than nutella toast anyway

Other than that I've got a Sainsbo's Arrabiata meal soup and some mange tout coming up, while the hordes will be eating toad in the hole.

I've really barely moved today so chances of that 2lbs magically disappearing again are going to be slight. Might have to be a 4:3 week.

BsshBossh · 11/04/2013 17:56

I'm truly amazed at all the 2lb gains on the same day! I think I might not weigh tomorrow Blush. But if I do and it's 2lb+ then at least a) I'll be in great company and b) it won't be my fault - it'll be something in the air.

Ezzza that made me laugh so hard! Thanks for helping me lose a few more calories Grin

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 17:58

Just be warned bvb, hummus is alarmingly high in cals!
Just had a couple of spoonfuls of the kids baked beans with grated cheese on top. Not the ideal way to break a fast but damn, it tasted good!
Moroccan stuffed peppers with salad for tea tonight, scrummy. Frankly I' so hungry today (which is weird after last night's binging) that cardboard would taste good. Working till eight so just 2hrs to go....

greenfig · 11/04/2013 18:14

ezza everyone knows that jail break cals don't count. So long as you didn't plan & prep the food yourself, you're fine Wink

kiwidreamer · 11/04/2013 18:16

Has anyone successfully managed to stop eating off the kids plates / their left overs?? I'm soooooooooo bad at this and snagging a few mouthfuls off DD's plate has probably cost me so many calories just now that I can afford a salad with no meat / dressing / cheese for my dinner. Oh the lure of curly fries... other lesson is to NOT take the cherubs to the supermarket during the holidays... curly fries for goodness sake.

I'm feeling this week maybe a bit of a bust, I really feel bigger than last week, I'm trying to accommodate a friend who is doing this and my DH and they both want to fast on different days to each other and the school hols and its all feel a bit disorganised unlike my first week and I have a thumping headache today. Baaaah.

I can probably manage the rest of the night without food so I don't think the fast will be ruined, I'm certainly not feeling hungry now I've had my scoff. I had ham off the bone and a bunch of asparagus at 2pm which was about 180cals, and have picked at more of the ham and some curly fries from their plates.

If I don't go down in the scales this week then I'm going to have to start using MFP on non fast days which is fucking annoying and one of the main reasons I wanted to try this method as I hate calorie counting day in day out.

I need a paracetemol and to get over myself!

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 18:16

All counted in dotty! Ta for the warning though :)

muriwai · 11/04/2013 18:27

Ezzza your tale of the Nutella's audacious escape has drawn me out of the lurkers' closet! I laughed so hard I had tears rolling down my face and DH thought that school holiday stress had finally driven me around the bend - thank you. Grin

I have been following this WOE since the end of Jan and lurking since a bit after that. I've lost about 9lb since then which is a bit slow for my liking, but thanks to all the inspirational stories here I have stuck with it and can see myself continuing indefinitely.

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 18:29

kiwi The faff of adding in the calories from the pinched bits off the kids' plates might be incentive enough to stop. Try having a cup of tea while the kids eat then chucking their plates straight in the sink and running the tap. Soggy food is not tasty! I used to be a leftovers scoffer but have managed to get out of the habit :)
