The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Watching Nigela Express in bed. Prob not the best thing to do on a fast day morning!

Whitecat · 11/04/2013 09:49

2lb up for me today but it seems I'm in good company so will just have to shrug it off and keep going.

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 09:51

Just did a weigh in and I'm 2lbs up as well!

Minimammoth · 11/04/2013 10:06

Am holding steady despite the pie.

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 10:09

well then! it must be the moon or something effecting our scales! glad of the company in the freaky weight gain wagon. sorry if that's selfish Wink

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 10:09

oh I had such a bad day yesterday. I was in complete binge mentality - several packs of crisps / couple of choc bars / pieces of home made rocky road etc etc.
Am no way going to see a shift on the scales this week. Feel so cross with myself!
Fast today and tomorrow I'm back on MFP with a vengeance!

bugsyburge · 11/04/2013 10:12

morning ladies, I've had an odd couple of week with this WOL. last week I just couldn't get into the fasting mindframe but with the use of MFP I was only eating about 1200kcal per day... not ideal but atleast not stuffing my face everyday....

this week I have got back into the fasting & really enjoyed it.... got on the scales yday and ive lost 1.5lbs so im happy with that Grin .

free day for me today but really not that hungry- does anyone else sometimes struggle to eat their allotted calories on feed days? it's quite annoying because I worry that I'm starving myself!!!!Angry

DippyDoohDahDay · 11/04/2013 10:31

Hi, new to this, boo ordered. My friend told me about it. I have looked at a couple of threads, am I right in thinking the weight loss is moderate/ slow?
Am weighing up whether to do this or slimming world again....

DippyDoohDahDay · 11/04/2013 10:31

Book ordered...

ELR · 11/04/2013 10:32

swallowed not selfish just human nature! It just makes us feel we aren't alone in the ups and downs of this woe.
Just had a cup of coffee and worked out my meals and calories for the day. I've got some lentil and butternut squash soup and tuna, bean and sweet corn salad for late lunch then eggs in purgatory and asparagus for dinner. Two cups of tea with milk brings me in at 493 calories for the day.

bugsy never struggle to eat my cals wish I did!! I don't usually overeat though so that's a good thing.

dotty put it down to a blip, we are allowed them every now and again. You are back on track now with a fast.

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 10:36

see that's true, easy to get back on track. i am going to fast today and am planning to take ds to softplay in a bit for distraction and time use. i can take a book and drink black coffee and pass a few hours whilst he runs himself ragged (as if, the boy never tires). it's also a decent walk there and back so a bit of exercise too.

we shall not be beaten by weird scales upswings.

welcome dippy. seems to vary for people - some lose a lot in early weeks, some take a while to get going etc. i don't think the weight loss is slow overall personally but it is up and down and some weeks stalling to be followed by a sudden drop. definitely a long term woe rather than short term diet.

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 10:37

actually what i would really like to do today is not eat at all and do a full fast. still a bit scared of that though. anyone fancy doing it with me and holding hands?

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 10:47

swallowedafly if I didn't already have tonight's 500 cal dinner with DH planned and bought then I would!
Perhaps next week?

Treacleq · 11/04/2013 11:06

Thanks plecofjusticel'd love to get down to 12st!

Re the Health Benefits - I too have severe IBS (D) and it has been basically non-existent since I started fasting! My psoriasis has got quite bad but I have no idea if the two are related... I do feel full of energy on fast days as well which is always a bonus :)

I too am in the very heavy category at 15 st currently - keep it up - we will get there!

greenfig · 11/04/2013 11:08

I wonder if it's some delayed Easter reaction that we are experiencing Hmm
Thanks ELR for the glass trick. I know when I can't drink, that's the silly thing! It seems to be wine related & friends are having similar issues. I'm fine if I really want a drink & if I stop when I don't really want any more. This can be at 1 glass, sometimes 3. I just get ill if I don't listen to my body (or drink spirits Wink ) Was just nice to stay up, drink wine & chat with DH. Not so nice this morning though!!
Hope it's not the salted caramel episode ELR
saf I am around today working from home to hand hold but don't think I'm man enough to join you! Good luck!!
I am still feeling strong & positive & keen to get on.

Northstarmum · 11/04/2013 11:17

Hello everyone, and especially to fellow Thursday fasters. Hard here today, had a busy week, no opportunity to exercise and fasting on different days to usual. I'm on a plateau since before easter (although the good news is that I managed not to put any on) but still Easter Eggs round the house to eat. Having a dry April (apart from some birthday celebrations) and May to try and shift another few lbs before our holiday. I'm hoping that all the inside stuff is doing me good as I'm in it as much for the health benefits as the weight loss. Since Jan I have lost about a stone and until I get my new holiday wardrobe I don't think anyone is going to notice- looking forward to the Shock when I can invest in some new figure flattering goodies.

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 11:27

Saf - I don't think I can, I'm stuck at home with little activity planned and my tummy's already rumbling. I ate quite late last night too so I'm trying to hold out till 4pm which sounds painful enough to me at this point. Good luck though.

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 11/04/2013 11:33

Hello Smile

I have been doing IF. I thought I'd try 5:2 but have actually ended up doing every other day. So I fasted last Thurs, Sat, Monday, but then I couldn't do yesterday so and fasting today instead. I guess that's a 4:3 for this week. Think I have lost 2lbs but feel there is a horrendously long way to go. I guess it's been a good kick start though.

Hardest thing is not having a glass bottle of wine on fast days when the children have been driving me up the wall in the holidays.

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 11:44

Hello Yoni - well done on a fantastic first week! School holidays can be tricky - I'm certainly blaming them for over-consumption of wine and chocolate on non fast days this week...

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 11:49

Yes, I've found the home baking and constantly grazing children a bit of a killer this week too!
Can't wait for the little cherubs to go back to school Grin

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 11:53

oh school! it's like mecca. even though i know it means i'll be back at work i still can't wait Grin

well done yoni! great start.

Dotty342kids · 11/04/2013 12:15

(just waiting for more Yoni related names to pop up on this thread after the great Yoni thread of yesterday!)

YoniFoolsAndHorses · 11/04/2013 12:23

Aw, thank you for the welcome. Am reading back as fast as I can.

Luckily all the baking the little one wanted to do today was some awful packet mix Peppa Pig cupcakes. To resist those haven't taken much effort this morning. Strangely, even though the dog stole one that dropped on the floor, even she didn't eat it Grin.

I haven't bought a book as I learnt from the previous unread dukan and dukan diet books have found a lot of things online to read that have been very useful. What I haven't found though is any evidence that 4:3 or 3:4 works any better than 5:2 in the long run. In which case, I shall give my body a break this weekend and stick to Mondays and Thursdays.... But I keep going back and searching as I want it to make a real difference soon as well as sustainable long term (I would love to get to one day a week fast long term). Am I being silly? Not sure.

Soft play sounds a good plan for today...

plecofjustice · 11/04/2013 12:52

Another joining the 2lb up club this morning Blush

Still, I hadn't weighed since before Easter, and did 2x6:1 over the Easter weekend (and drank and ate an inordinate amount of bread and wheat stuff) so I don't think that's too bad really

(and it's TOTM)

The excuses keep coming lol!

postmanpatscat · 11/04/2013 13:20

saf if you can wait til tomorrow to do a no-holds-barred-zero-food fast I'll join you!
