The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Ohh nice to find this thread! Did my first fast on Monday, went ok. 2 days of normal eating ( I tend to eat low fat low carb anyhow, but weekends are relaxed with a fair bit of wine!) have been wanting to shift half a stone to 10 pounds for ages ( Im 9 stone 5, 5 foot 4 and 39 years old) like the look of the health benifits rolled in with the 5:2 plus it seems do able for a social life! Day 2 fast tomorrow. Does it make a big difference as to when you eat your 500 cals in most peoples experience? Have not read back through the whole thread as it's way too long! My job is fairly physical and I'm a bit worried about lack of energy tomorrow but need to have a evening meal so can't consume too much in the day. Any advice appreciaterd!

mamamoomin2 · 10/04/2013 20:29

Back on it dotty!

I just want the focus and ease I had at the start. I found fast days pretty ok! Now they are quite sorry...and no loss I find quite demotivating.

Onwards and downwards!

Toofattooold · 10/04/2013 20:42

Hi! I'm A newbie! Completed 3 fasts so far and haven't lost a pound! Hoping some weight loss will kick in soon. Did find my 3rd fast very easy so that's positive. Went out for lunch and dinner on Monday to celebrate my anniversary so that probably didn't help my calorie intake. I'm going to try and be good this week. I tend to eat all my calories in the evening! Looking to lose 9 pounds to fall beneath the 10st mark!

WhitingLikeTheFish · 10/04/2013 22:14

My second day of posting. Hello everyone. I got over my Malteezer mini melt down and had a good fast day yesterday. That was my 9th fast and it really does seem to be getting easier. I'm going to try and be patient about staying the same weight since my second week - Im sure it'll just suddenly go.

Feel rather heavy though listening to all you guys going to break into the 10st on 9st category. I'm 14 stone 10 and feel a right heffer!

Ate well today will do the same tomorrow and then fast friday - I'm praying the scales will be good to me on Saturday morning.

headintheclouds · 10/04/2013 22:23

greenfig yes Im another who's managed to lose nothing/ nada after a fast and its soul destroying when youve worked so hard to fast.
saf well done on your loss.17 lbs is amazing and its obvious from all your posts on here how much effort you put in..
laska42 thanks for your inspiring posts ..Im another huge fan of the aubergine curry on any day.I usually make a batch and have it on both my fast days ( its even better on my second fast day of the week when the flavours have developed.)
For any people new to this WOE I'll second that there is no right or wrong way of doing this as long as you keep to under 500 ish cals after your fast. I dont think it makes much difference whether you have split the cals into 2 meals or save it for 1 meal in the evening.
You have to do whatever works for you personally. I always go as long as possible ,usually break my fast at 3 pm ( about 20 hours fast) with low cal soup and have about 350 cals for my evening meal around 7 pm.
ive lost 8.5 lbs in 10 weeks which personally I think is a sloooooow loss...BUT its a loss and as long as it keeps coming off I try not to get too hung up about it.I get a bitEnvy of those who I perceive to have had far quicker losses than me in the same amount of time but we are all different arent we ....sorry long post!

headintheclouds · 10/04/2013 22:29

by the way good luck to all Thursday fasters .me included. Im spending a day with my child in hospital tomorrowDS is having a small op. Have to be in hospital at 0800 starved ( him not me Grin ) . Ill either find it easy because I wont have access to anything till later or blardy difficult because Ill be bored whilst he's in theatre and Ill need to raid the shop.

Laska42 · 10/04/2013 22:53

whiting chin up girl! .. I was 13st 10 when I started dieting on weight watchers and I lost 2 stone very very very slooooowly , stalled at 11st 10ish for about 2 years and thought that was it for me until I started this WOE last August).

By Christmas I was down to 10st 2 and i've bounced around t 10st - 10,1 ever since ( but was thrilled with that and pleased to maintain. )
So I have only really been fasting 6:1 now for a couple of months.

But I have started back on 4:3 (Sun, Tues. Thurs) this last week because I'd like to shift another half stone for my June holiday. 4:3 because it suits my lifestyle and so I can WineWine Friday and Sat (yes i know its bad..but hey ho)

I wouldnt want to go any lower than 9:7,(which still feels like an impossible dream, compared to what I was) because at 55 I think id look far to gaunt .

Paintingrainbowskies · 10/04/2013 22:54

WhitingLikeTheFish I'm another who has more to lose, I'm currently 14 stone 3, started this woe in Feb at 15 stone exactly. Have to say though I'm encouraged by all the smaller posters on this thread, I think I'm learning lots about how slim people eat!

Eating day here and gone AWOL, too many treats and snacks. If there is one thing this woe is teaching me is why I'm overweight in the first place, my snacking and portion control was/is out of control.

akarucker · 10/04/2013 23:03

painting whiting I'm another one...bigger than either of you! Started at a whopping 15st 10lbs. Eight weeks on I'm at 14st13lbs. Have stalled for a couple of weeks. Easter threw me off a bit (I can't undo years of bad habits in just a couple of months), but these posts are keeping me motivated and inspired. Fast day tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

WhitingLikeTheFish · 10/04/2013 23:16

akaruker painting and laska thanks girls good to know you're out there and all embracing this new WOL. I started at 15 3 but know I'd been heavier before that. Dog walking our new pup was already helping to ebb the tide. Like lots I'm using the MFP app and loving using it - especially the bar code reader. I am trying to stick around the calorie goal that it set for me. Early on I was often under - coz of long daily walks. Maybe I should have eaten more - don't know there seems to be 50% of folk dieting on their 5 days a week and it works for them and the other 50 eating as close to their calorie goal and a little over and it works better for them. I've no idea which camp I should be in so seem to do a little bit of both. More diet-y in the week and less so at the weekend. Very good on Fast days so hoping that overall I will win.

sweetkitty · 10/04/2013 23:41

Not very good fast day here today Hmm cracked at 1pm had low cal soup, then a bit of chocolate Easter egg before dinner of new potatoes and salad. Why it went wrong?

I don't think I had enough to eat yesterday I woke up famished.
Didn't drink enough
I was cold all day

But the WiiFit said I was down a pound and this was at 4.30pm so good amount of liquid on board.

I'm loving this WOE though even though I haven't got much to lose I think ill still fast for health benefits, it's taught me that I need to drink a lot more and not to stuff my face until I'm uncomfortably full.

Eating day tomorrow and ill do a mini fast on Friday to make up for today.

Breadandwine · 11/04/2013 01:16

Don't forget all the health benefits that accrue on this WOL even though the scales aren't moving.

Think of it as inadvertent maintaining. Grin

All the evidence is that you will lose weight, eventually.

A trip to the docs (for something else) has seen me diagnosed (last Friday) with coeliac disease! I'm waiting for the biopsy to confirm it, but I had high levels of gluten antibodies in my blood.

Ellen, if you are diagnosed as coeliac, in one sense you'll be better off than those who have gluten/wheat allergies, intolerances, etc, in that you'll entitled to prescription breads and flour. In the past I've run gluten-free breadmaking workshops, and we've made all the breads I would normally make, only using gluten-free flours - Juvela and Glutafin, in the main.

I have a post on my blog, which has a lot of info on this subject which you and others may find helpful:

nobreadisanisland.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/gluten-free-breads-and-baking.html

Plus I have GF cake and pancake recipes on the blog.

Best wishes for Friday, B&W

Toofattooold · 11/04/2013 07:07

Fast day today for me - my fourth. It's great to read so many posts about how you have all lost so much weight. I will use this as my inspiration to keep going despite not losing weight so far. I usually look for any excuse to give up! Good luck to all fasters today!

greenfig · 11/04/2013 07:54

toofattooold I LOVE your name, wish I'd thought of it Grin You'll get there, keep going!
I was doing really well (eat day yest) then dithered about evening meal timing as DS was at a sports thingy. Opted to eat when he & DH got back & ended up having a glass of wine while I waited for them. Had another when they got back, a late supper & then had a plate of cheese.
This led to overheating in the middle of the night & sleeping badly & a hangover this am & I have to fast Sad I had been so virtuous all day, eaten clean & healthy, which was what I fancied, now I feel pants, & I'm up another lb this am!! I conclude that I need to be more control freaky about eating times not leading me to the slippery slope!
Already had tea with milk, hope we all have a good fast day.

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 08:06

ha! today the scales say i'm 4.4lbs heavier than yesterday. which according to the cals rule would mean i ate about 13000 calories too many yesterday. hmm.

i did eat two big meals one of which was chinese so am probably full of salt and water. i expected an up but 4.4lbs is crazy. not sure if i'll fast today or not as i only just did tuesday. will not eat this morning and will decide in the early afternoon if it's a fast day or not.

Minimammoth · 11/04/2013 08:20

Oh no SAF. I had a pub pie yesterday, so am expecting repercussions. I am going to do a fast day, but have got a v. Busy long day and might get hungry for carbs.

Minimammoth · 11/04/2013 08:24

Breads swine I read that they are going to do away with the prescription gluten free stuff. Reasons being that it is now widely available. Apparently.

Minimammoth · 11/04/2013 08:27

Bread swine!,!, that sounds so rude, I apologise on behalf of my iPad Breadandwine

BetsyVanBell · 11/04/2013 08:36

Sounds like a massive amount of water retention saf - yikes!

Well I'm definitely fasting today after a big eating day yesterday - and remembered not to have milk in my tea without thinking! I had a plate of cheese and apple and a curly wurly late last night so my system's got plenty of dairy to be dealing with without me plonking milk in my system today. Went to bed feeling uncomfortably full.

For those new starters who have lots to lose - 19 months ago I was 13st 5 having spent most of my healthy adult life naturally at 11ish stone (but looked slim on it). Discovering I'd put on 2 stone without noticing was an eye opener so I made an effort eat healthily and record everything I ate to re-assess my eating (and exercising) habits. Through this I lost 2 stone but got stuck at 11stone something, which I didn't mind as I knew I was at my 'normal' level. But I had a Dexa scan which revealed I was over 40% fat, which shocked me and motivated me. However, my usual method of weight loss (calorie restriction essentially) seemed to be unsustainable and hard work, and then there was Christmas which piled 7lbs back on and therefore undoing all my hard work! So in Jan I started IF (5:2) and since then I've easily lost 12lbs - and finally got myself to my goal of being in 'normal' BMI range - and am a lower weight than I've ever been healthily. The scales are still moving downwards. I'm currently 10st 4ish and can see that 9 stone something is a possibility now so am vaguely aiming for it but don't mind how long it takes!

At this point I'm enjoying the weight loss but it isn't the primary motivator. There is a history of type 2 diabetes in the family and I see no reason why I should end up going down that route. Plus high cholesterol levels on the (slim) other side of my family. I had blood work done a year ago as part of a study (along with the Dexa) and am hoping to get some of the blood tests done again to see if there's any improvements. Not sure how I go about convincing a doc to do this! Any tips gratefully received!

postmanpatscat · 11/04/2013 08:40

Morning all and welcome new posters :)

My second fast of the week has been postponed til tomorrow - DP wants to go out for a curry tonight!

I have only bounced up 300g since completing my mammoth 36 hour no food fast on Monday, so I'm pleased about that.

saf 4 pounds?!! No way!!

Paintingrainbowskies · 11/04/2013 08:43

Morning, fast day here. Scales have moved up this week, hoping its hormonal or water and not actual increase.

As per usual my plan for today is nothing but water, coffee and a bouillon drink around lunchtime then a reasonable 500 calorie dinner, usually vegetable and lentil curry.

I do my fasts on a Tuesday and I sway between Thursday and Friday.

swallowedAfly · 11/04/2013 08:52

i know postman - not possible really is it? going to not eat for the morning and let my digestive system have a chance to work then weigh again and see what it says. think i will try and fast today though. enjoy your curry.

ELR · 11/04/2013 08:53

Well I'm up 2lbs this morning!! What's going on......?
Fasting today so hoping for a good way in tomorrow which is the one I count, but still disheartening.
greenfig try drinking wine in a champagne glass it takes longer to drink and feels more like a treat, we'll I think so anyway and I can have two glasses without feeling like I've had too much.

ELR · 11/04/2013 08:56

postman was it you that got the fitbit one? How are you finding it? I am waiting for the fitbit flex to come out but getting impatient so may buy a one or a zip. Sorry if it isn't you!

postmanpatscat · 11/04/2013 09:08

yes ELR it was me! It arrived on Saturday. I haven't worn it to sleep yet, just everywhere else. I'm still getting used to the way fitbit and MFP interact. I exceeded 20000 steps yesterday thanks to traipsing around town, Westfield and then the gym. It's a bit ambitious sometimes - no way have I already climbed 17 floors, more like 6 or 7!
