The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here. :)

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Thanks for the replies. I keep waiting to feel marvellous. Yes I've lost weight and yes I feel in control, I'm not sure what else I was expecting.

postmanpatscat · 10/04/2013 16:28

OOps, something else I forgot...killing time at Victoria station this morning waiting for the passport office to open, I read an article about 5:2 in Zest magazine in WHSmith (as you do!) It wasn't particularly positive, neither was it particularly scientific (e.g. only about one person's experience, she did it for four weeks and stuffed herself silly when not fasting for the first two weeks). It portrays IF as the latest diet bandwagon. They should have interviewed us lot and got a much better article instead!

FiFizz · 10/04/2013 16:41

Fast day for me today, but im also struggling with a terrible headache. I've had two crisp breads with cucumber and tomato with a little balsamic at lunch.Drinking lots of water to try and ease headache, really don't want it to turn into a migraine Sad. Planning to have a glorious soup and veg for supper.

plecofjustice · 10/04/2013 17:11

Fast day and craving raw garlic.

Am I weird, or is it just the ketoney taste in my mouth? - 30 cals consumed since last night....

swallowedAfly · 10/04/2013 17:27

garlic is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. go for it if you're craving it. when i'm ill i grate garlic into a cup, grate ginger on top and squeeze in lemon and add boiling water.

ELR · 10/04/2013 17:44

plec as long as you are sleeping alone tonight!!

Laska42 · 10/04/2013 18:03

I just posted this on the maintainers thread , but thought i would here also.., just in case anyone is looking for encouragement..

I have been WOE since last august . when I saw the Horizon programme and started the same week .

I've been off work today having a bit of a blitz on the house as i've been neglecting it lately ( not that its just my job ,mind ) Hmm. Have been through the wardrobe again , and I'm not really whining (OK I am a little) , but its a bit gutting to see all the spring and summer clothes I'm going to have to ebay .

I'm nearly 2 stone a lighter than this time last year (nearly 4 stone all told) and of course I'm thrilled , but as I'd been been stuck at that weight for a couple of years I had decided that was probably that, and Id never get any thinner than I was then.

So ,last spring I treated myself to a new summer wardrobe from nice places like Monsoon, Boden and White Stuff etc. Thinking it would all last me for some years.

But what with the rotten summer last year and this wonderful WOE I'm now going to have to get rid of nearly all of it and its almost (and in some cases ,totally) unworn ! .. especially the summer dresses.

I can probably get a couple altered I think ,but as for the rest its no good keeping them I'm never going to get that big again ..

(And now most of my my sz 10 jeans are also too big )
Also someone else mentioned that their shoes were too big? A few of of mine are too. Who'd have thought that I had fat feet? they didnt look fat but perhaps all the extra weight had spread then out

But Grrr Angry and GrinGrin

Shall I send Dr Mosley the bill do you think?

Anyone up for some nice 10s, 12s and 14s? if so, ill let you know when they are on ebay

Eating day.. I have fish cakes stuffed with cheese today.. YUM! might have a Wine also. This is such a fantastic WOE .

Miffytastic · 10/04/2013 18:26

Oooh yes please Laska do we get a 5:2 clique discount Wink?

Minimammoth · 10/04/2013 18:27

I have sustained my lower weight today which is reassuring, but I have succumbed to a Pub pie. Now feeling horribly bloated. Fast tomorrow.

frenchfancy · 10/04/2013 18:29

Yes do let us know Laska. I'm still buying some stuff from ebay as none of my old clothes fit. I am a bit wary of buying new in case I get the same problem as you. I'm firmly in size 12 tops, but my nice size 12 skirts I bought on ebay not long ago are getting a bit loose.

Laska42 · 10/04/2013 18:38

I wont put up the summer stuff quite yet, but have 3 pairs of virtually new Monsoon and Laura Ashley linen trousers (the LA ones are unworn) as well as a fab Boden linen dress which sold out (will be looking for it again in a sz 10 .. hopefully someone else will have had the same problem!! ) ..

Here's hoping it will be warm enough for linen this year eh?

Chipstick10 · 10/04/2013 18:48

I can remember every year for at least the last ten I have dreaded the good weather approaching and have positively embraced the cold weather because I know I can hide and wrap up. This year I am feeling very different
Ok I'm not quite there yet but my confidence is gaining.

Hasywell · 10/04/2013 18:50

Laska42 thank you for that delicious recipe for aubergine, chick pea and spinach curry - finally made a big pot and love it! Will definitely be a fast day favourite! I feel your pain re the clothes situation -buy favourite clothes are quickly becoming to big but I am a little reticent to buy too much that is smaller at moment. Although in your case you can celebrate the need for another shopping trip and that perfect excuse for even more clothes shopping! Grin

Laska42 · 10/04/2013 19:00

oh and the other great thing about this WOE is in all the many, many years I did weightwatchers. I never would have eaten fish cakes stuffed with cheese.

Fasting again tomorrow! it'll be eggs for breakfast as usual and I just made a pot of vegetable goulash soup and ill have some for an early dinner .

I still eat two meals on fasting days and have done all the way through except for a couple of times. it suits me best and i've still lost weight. I do have a 16hr widow of no food whatsoever though, just mint tea and water . I usually have real black coffee in the mornings as well.

There's no one 'right' way to do this WOE, except to only eat 500 cals (or 600 for a bloke) ..so its best to experiment for yourselves. DR M nearly always has 2 meals ..

Those of us who have been around a while think the 16hr non-eating window is optimum to give the health benefits you are looking for (but of course we are all experimenting here as the science is young. Some people do 24hrs.. I do try for that sometimes but have usually caved at about 20/22 Grin .

But If you are just starting out , though, just stick with your 500/600..over the 36hrs . i e. eat dinner ,go to bed, eat 500 cals the next day , go to bed, eat normal breakfast.

You can think about timings later on if you want to ..no need to complicate matters or make it more difficult than you need. it will work (well it has for most people , but a few have been unlucky) as it is and sometimes simple is just best Smile

Laska42 · 10/04/2013 19:03

Glad you liked it hasywell . We love it so much that we eat it even on non-fast days round here!

I do recommend the Mr Ls roasted carrot and red pepper soup also (and my borchst if you like beetroot ) . Both are on the recipe thread

Dotty342kids · 10/04/2013 19:12

Hi laska, great to hear your successes, and yes, do let us know when you put the clothes on ebay! I'm only just starting out on this journey so my clothes are now fitting comfortably, as opposed to uncomfortably! I'm a way off actually dropping a clothes size but definitely looking forward to it.
Mind you, if I keep eating home made rocky road cake on my eating days (as per today - oops!) I'm going to be waiting rather a long time.
Fasting tomorrow so that'll stop me, thank goodness!

Chipstick10 · 10/04/2013 19:21

Just filled my tum for the first time today. Lightly breaded fish with a massive plate of salad. Yum.

Minimammoth · 10/04/2013 19:23

Thanks for the encouragement Laska.

akarucker · 10/04/2013 19:28

laska that was great to read! Thank you.

Laska42 · 10/04/2013 19:32

Grin dotty though i've found my tastes have completely changed on this WOE. As well as my portion sizes on eating days which have become 'naturally smaller - I find I dont 'need to eat so much and do get fuller quicker (or am now able to recognise when I'm full, I think that's what eating such a small amount on fast days does, retrains your stomach). . it took a few weeks though to get to that

Actually I now ask my self if I think what I'm eating on eating days is is 'worth' spending the calories on,and if its not , I dont bother and now find im eating only what i really like and am not worried about going hungry if i cant get lunch or something. Id rather wait for something decent than have (say) a supermarket sandwich.

I've also taken on board B&Ws tip of waiting 20mins before I eat the second helping of anything, and quite often I dont actually have it (except that doesn't seem to be working for Wine though, HmmGrin)

However I do eat a bit of (V dark, as I like that best) chocolate sometimes now when I wouldn't allow myself to have any before.

Good luck with it, you'll soon be ebaying things yourself!

Laska42 · 10/04/2013 19:34

good luck all.. must go do some other stuff now..

mamamoomin2 · 10/04/2013 19:53

Well. I am going to get n focus back and get back on with losing weight. I've got a bit lazy and go over 500 on fasts days and not watching what I eat on other days.

Since starting in Jan, I was losing weight like no tomorrow! Averaging 3lb a week. Got to under 11st and gave been hovering between 10.7 and 11.1 for past 5 weeks. Grrr.

I also stopped using mfp, switched from 5:3 to 4:2 and stopped reading this thread! So I am going back to square one and tracking, 4:3 and mostly lurking here :)

Please, please let me get back on track. I was doing so well. Although I do appreciate it could just be a natural plateau and will start shifting again anyway. I hope!!

monster54 · 10/04/2013 19:59

I MADE IT!!!! YES!!!!

Soup late lunch and again for dinner...nice shower and early bed....was a real struggle today but posts and success stories people share just kept me going!

Hope to see a nice loss this week...will try not to get my hopes up as I'm due a plateu!!

ellenbrody · 10/04/2013 20:05

Well done monster!

Dotty342kids · 10/04/2013 20:11

mamamoomin2 I think it's easy to get complacent. I know my current plateau has coincided with me stopping using MFP so really need to get back on with that. Fast day tomorrow so that's covered but back to MFP after that!
