5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Fast going brilliantly, am finding it much easier now. I'm sort of doing 4.5:2.5 - having 2

BlackMaryJanes · 13/03/2013 15:56

Guys lets talk sabotage. Has anyone tried to sabotage your efforts? For example, one thing that genuinely gets my goat is people saying: "why are you on a diet? You dont need to loose any weight. you'll dissapear" etc etc. How do they expext me to respond to that? "Oh, well if YOU say I dont beed to loose weight then I wont bother. you obviously know more about my weight than I do!"

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 13/03/2013 16:10

BMJ I just get people saying 'you are going to get an eating disorder' or 'when you start eating properly you will pile it back on'.

I find that the results speak for themselves to be honest! Grin

BetsyVanBell · 13/03/2013 16:20

B&W I'd be interested in some pencil holding activities if you'd be kind enough to pass them along!

Impromptu fast today - not my usual routine as I did have breakfast but then ran out of time to have lunch so have just thought I may as well hold out til a light soup supper and that'll do the job! It's either that or I make a massive pig of myself right now, and I don't want to do that. Spurred on by trying on buying a bikini today, EEK Shock.

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 16:42

afternoon. just broke my fast (mini fast day) with a little pack of wasabi - filling and tasty for only 145cals - thought i'd mention it for those who like mini meals in the day still and also maybe useful to those who want treats/munchies on train journeys when they have long out of town work days.

today is an eat day but i've been to the supermarket on the way home from work and stocked up on fishy treats. i do intend to have pasta with reduced fat creme fraiche and smoked salmon for my 'eat' dinner but if i get munchy i can eat healthy low fat protein stuff i've bought. mind you i did buy a small packet of choc digestives at 80cals each and have my permission to have a few if i want them.

i think eat days probably need a bit of planning in the sense that if like today you can feel it's going to be a munchy one and you really feel like eating then buying stuff in for that that is damage limitation food (like the seafood i've gone for today) could be helpful.

the wasabi rolls are really sinking in though and filling me up so i will try and hold off for at least an hour before eating anything else so i don't just go into stuff my face and i'm on a roll so i'll stuff it some more mode - a mode i'm quite good at Wink

i am going to pour myself a glass of wine though. have to be up early and into train station early tomorrow so and am child free so a couple of glasses of wine early and a nice hot bath will hopefully soothe me into an early night.

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 16:43

have just realised i haven't inhaled a tub of ben and jerry's for weeks now - i think i have killed the craving and habit of ice cream! that is good news.

Sugarice · 13/03/2013 16:55

Hi all, may I join in.

I have to shift a stone, I had a hysterectomy back in November and I have accumulated a lot of weight around my middle which I need to get rid of, it's depressing me no end.

I really want to get into this, will buy MM's book tomorrow.

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 17:01

of course you can sugarice - welcome aboard. everyone seems to be finding this is great for losing weight around the middle. take some measurements before you get started so you can keep track.

hope you have healed and recovered well other than the weight gain Smile

jayceejay3 · 13/03/2013 17:10

Just throwing this out there, (I`m not terribly clued up on the science bit) Does it make a difference where your cals come from or not? on a feast day I mean. obviously its good to eat healthily but leaving that aside...

Sugarice · 13/03/2013 17:22

swallowedAfly yes recovered well thanks.

I had my ovaries out too, I'm concerned that my weight gain is linked and it may never shift, read lots of material online [never good I know] and it's common by all accounts, I've been a low carber for a long time and don't eat bread so am determined to do this and get this spare tyre to shift.

Talkinpeace · 13/03/2013 17:48

BlackMaryJanes
I am not on a diet. I am fasting for the long term health benefits.
That tends to shut people up.

Jaycee
Eat what you like - a fair few of my non fast calories come from wine, pizza and roast sunday lunch :-)

Dotty342kids · 13/03/2013 17:51

jaycee obviously from a health point of view (and from the point of view of getting "more" for your calories) then best to eat lots of nice healthy protein and fresh fruit and veg.
BUT the whole point of this woe is that it shouldn't feel like a permanent "diet" but a woe that accommodates real life with all its treats and little pleasures so...... enjoy your food, eat what your body will thrive on and don't feel bad about the more calorific, fun stuff!

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 18:07

sugarice - it's like hitting menopause instantly i guess which is also associated with weight gain around the middle. i actually watched a video on it recently - can't remember where - might have been linked to on these threads. was looking at why women are more prone to apple shape after menopause. i bet you can sort it! it hasn't been long and you've been through a huge hormonal shift so now things have settled down a bit and you've got a new plan of attack i bet you can shift it Smile

jaycee - eat what you want. i'm tucking into sushi and shellfish this evening because i know i felt like eating and eating and having lots of flavour - if i'd try to do that on fatty, salty, sugary, nutritionally empty food that would have meant a hell of a lot of calories and i really need to see some progress this week.

Minimammoth · 13/03/2013 18:09

I have done really well today. No breakfast, large cup of tea, coffee mid morning, soup, boiled egg and a few salad leaves, soup for tea about350 cals. Planning on piece of toast for supper, and tea .
Thanks talkin

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 18:12

i have had some sushi. then a gap. then a cup of mussels with vinegar on. i'm holding off on my treat myself to pasta dinner for a while longer so i go to bed with the carby full niceness Grin

greenfig · 13/03/2013 18:28

Ooh BVB tell us about the bikini! Can't wait for some sunshineSmile

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 18:29

you know i may even sack off the pasta for another day. reality is i'm going to eat some of those chocolate biscuits so maybe i'll just have some fruit and go straight to the bics. i actually feel quite full up. do you think it matters if you have quite a few low cal days in a row? i'm off out with a friend for a proper truck stop fry up on friday so that's a few days worth right there.

Daisy1407 · 13/03/2013 18:40

I've done about a 20hr fast so tonight well in about 3 mins I'm having 2 hit and spicy chicken breasts from BBQ range Asda at 102kcal each with a jacket potato at 210kcal with lots of salad then a hot choc to send me up to bed!
Food time! X

Miffytastic · 13/03/2013 18:44

venus you mentioned on pg8 of this thread about headaches - I'm no expert but I wonder if it was caused by sugar - as you said you had an ice lolly and half a pear , which is mostly fructose water and fibre. I find I can feel rough after eating my main fast day meal, more exhausted and a bit headachey. What works for me is lots of redbush tea, and low fat dairy /protein meals eg baby bel light or yogurt.
Hope that helps

BetsyVanBell · 13/03/2013 18:48

greenfig Just a cheapy from primark - blue & navy stripes, bit 1950s style! I'm going somewhere with a pool over easter and figure a bikini will be easier to dry in a hotel bathroom than full on swimming cossie! Also if people must see me half nekkid then I'd rather the focus was on the slightly toned upper half than the awful flabby legs Blush. My Jillian regime to attempt to make them less dreadful has gone by the wayside with having a cold for too long.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 13/03/2013 18:55

Haven't eaten today as have got a meal out this evening. I decided to think like a thin person & save myself. Not that hard really as today was meant to be a fast day anyway. :o

I take a multivitamin on fast days - may be worth considering for people whose nails have gone a bit flaky.

Inlovewithchocolate · 13/03/2013 19:09

Wow fasting is quite easy if you put your mind to it. I've been doing this for a couple of weeks now and am finding it doable. It fits right into your lifestyle. This site is fantastic, the support is amazing.
I have a stone to lose

jayceejay3 · 13/03/2013 19:38

Thanks! having some wine right now! you girls have really embraced it, Ive still got guilt pangs, old habits die hard I guess? p.s, cant suss how to use smileys???

Strawberrysouffle · 13/03/2013 20:01

Please can you help me. I am feeling so demotivated!

I have been doing 5:2 since last September. For the first 4 months I steadily lost 12 pounds but for the past 2 months I have lost nothing Sad

I assume this is a plateau and I have tried to be patient but I dont feel like I am doing anything different. Also I am not losing inches as my clothes have felt the same for the past 2 months.

Has anyone experienced this? Will the weightloss start again or do I have to do something different? I do a spin class twice a week and walk every day. I have a bmi of about 26 so not underweight. I eat enough on eating days but not too much. On fast days I have about 300 calories at 4pm then a big bowl of soup at about 8.30. I drink hot water through the day.

Any help or ideas would be really appreciated.

parrotsandcarsnips · 13/03/2013 20:08

Hi peplum41 it is good to hear how you manage your fast on night shift.
breadandwine thanks for tips on insomnia but it is my first night off which i struggle with despite usually only having 3-4 hours that day.

For those of normal BMI, I have lost weight and I dont want to lose anymore(health beneifts were main goal, but also giving husband moral support as he is losing weight)
I plan to continue with fasting but will not restrict calorie intake, a nice problem to have,I guess. Any tips appreciated
