5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi, I have just done my second fast day, so I'm still learning what is right for me. Today, I didn't eat anything until 12.30, which was fine, then I didnt have anything until 5.00. I was then starving at 8.00. I have just had a second portion of vegetable chilli, so Im hoping it didnt push me too over. What do people find is the best way of dividing the calories? 3 small meals or 2 meals? I'm quite proud of myself that I managed to resist the temptation to have a biscuit! I did find that on my non fast day (yesterday) I ate a LOT of cake! I'm hoping this settles down and it just becomes a way of life, rather than just a binge fest when I'm not fasting! I have lost a couple of lb's already though, so it seems to be working!

LexingtonBear · 13/03/2013 20:37

Watching Masterchef on a fast day is just self-inflicted torture! But wanted to say thanks to everyone for all your inspiration - have been lurking for a while and am cautiously optimistic about this WOE. Have lost over a stone since Jan and just feel generally much healthier and - importantly - much more mindful of what I'm eating. Finding fasting increasingly enjoyable - and a big shout out to Linda McCartney lentil cottage pie as my staple evening fast meal!

Talkinpeace · 13/03/2013 20:40

Strawberry
Have you checked your TDEE and eating day calories?
Just that if you have now "balanced" your new calorie needs with what you are eating, you'll not lose any more.
I now REALLY struggle to lose more (v low BMI) but will make the effort before my Easter beach holiday
but with TDEE of 1500 have little leeway!
especially once Wine is taken into account!

I'd suggest logging your non fast food onto MFP and seeing where you are relative to TDEE
and
increase your exercise levels

I know 5:2 is not meant to include calorie counting : once you are slim it does not, but while you are retraining your brain it can be useful

PoshVoice · 13/03/2013 20:43

Hi everyone,

Well done to everyone fasting today. A feast day today and boy have I been eating!

Someone at work brought in homemade Dundee cake for their birthday yesterday, took all my willpower to resist but I did grab a slice and put it in the work fridge for today.

Lasted a whole 20 minutes at work today before eating it, since then I have had my stir fry for lunch (very healthy, seven veg (let's just gloss over the sirloin steak in at as we'll!)). Then i had a twix. Got home from work and I've had two packets of crisps (why? I almost never eat crisps) and I'm on my second grey goose and diet Pepsi whilst watching the match. I've also got a rack of lamb to eat this evening.

::faceplam::

Im gonna Chalk this day down to experience, I think breaking my habit of having no breakfast has lead to me being hungry all day.

Back on the wagon tomorrow with my last fast day of the week.

Daisy1407 · 13/03/2013 20:53

Gosh I have a headache tonight! Having really dry hands too....really odd! And dry lips! Oh we'll nearly bedtime - food tomorrow YEY

wildwater · 13/03/2013 20:57

The perfect break-fast: freeze half a banana (cut into chunks) overnight. In the morning (or whenever) put the frozen banana in blender with half a cup of skim milk. Whizz until thick and creamy. Amazing consistency, great taste, under 100 calories.

plecofjustice · 13/03/2013 20:58

Strawberry

I'm like you, started back in September. Something I do, every so often (about every couple of months), is do a 6:1 - admittedly, usually because I can't fit a second fast in a packed week, rather than consciously. However, I find it does help to kick start everything again, I might put on a pound, or even stay the same, but the next week back on 5:2, I'm losing more.

It also reminds me I'm not a slave to the diet - keeps it in the perspective of WOE, I guess. After all, if I'm in it for the long haul, I have to enable myself to have the flexibility to stop myself from saying "sod this, life's too short" as I have done with every other diet Blush

BetsyVanBell · 13/03/2013 21:00

Doing 2 fast days close together is hard (Monday & Wednesday). I'm usually hungriest 2 days after a fast so I'm trying this out today in an effort not to overeat. Nearly there though! Gone over my calories a bit as I had a largish but mostly healthy brunch before I decided on this being a fast day and was pretty darn hungry by the time I ate my veg soup this evening. Ended up eating a bit of the yorkshire pud from the kids' toad in the hole, and a handful of nuts & dried fruits about an hour later. I feel hungry now but I'm going to ride through it. I wouldn't normally have anything before lunchtime on a fast day and I'd forgotten how much harder it is if you do eat earlier, especially as I'd normally do most of my cals in the evening.

I might try and do a mini fast on Friday otherwise it's too many feed days before Monday's fast.

However, it did mean I didn't snack during the post work/school danger zone :) a habit I'm desperately trying to break.

I'm also trying to claw my way back down to my last lowest weight - last spotted 1st March and was only half a pound off it this morning. Would like to sit on that weight firmly for a bit rather than bounce back up again. I've managed to pick up my exercise levels a bit these last couple of days too.

Well done to any new fasters, you all seem to be finding it a little easier with a couple under your belt Grin.

frenchfancy · 13/03/2013 21:28

Strawberry I had a plateau at about the same level which thankfully has now moved. Things I did to move along include logging on MFP and upping my fitness. So for example instead of walking take up running. Having a week off or having a big blow out are also said to help move off plateaus.

Nettnett · 13/03/2013 21:41

Hello everyone!
I'm another long-time lurker emerging from the ether!
I have read (most) of the threads, usually on fast days, as inspiration to stay on track, and I must say, it worked! (thank-you TIP!)
I am doing 5:2 mainly for the health benefits, as my DM has just been diagnosed with dementia, however, the loss of 2kg has been most welcome!
So, my stats are:
58 years old
1.63 cm tall
56.2 kg (woo hoo!)
BMI 19.3
I've been on this WOL for 1 month now, have no trouble doing my exercise (30 minutes walk a day, and 3 Pilates classes a week) on fast days, and have worked up to a 23-24 hour fast, and a 16 hour fast (no breakfast) most other days. And of course, NO SNACKING!!
Thank-you again ladies, (not forgetting MOB and BreadandWine) for your fabulous inspiration!

Talkinpeace · 13/03/2013 21:49

Welcome Nettnett - somehow me must get ManonBoard back on these threads - he was even more opinionated than me :-)

WinnerK · 13/03/2013 21:51

Hi everyone

I posted in the previous thread but BetsyVanBell kindly redirected me here, did not realise how fast these threads move!

Quick recap - I'm 30 years old and have been doing 5:2 for almost four weeks now, I seem to have dropped a lot of weight quite quickly and want to make it more sustainable, I don't want to yoyo.

BlackMaryJanes - I'm 5ft 7". I weighed myself last week and had dropped to 9 stone but weighed myself today and I'm just under 9.5 stone now, maybe I am just weighing myself too often?!

My favourite time of the week is waking up after a fast day and going for a morning swim, my stomach has never felt so flat and I've never felt so light!

jayceejay3 · 13/03/2013 22:31

Strawberry, thats amazing weight loss, almost a stone! Reading other posts it seems to be a pattern to at some point stop losing inches and weight. maybe read the science bit again? because I`m fairly sure this is not uncommon. Maybe a kick-start fast over 36 hours would trigger?

headintheclouds · 13/03/2013 22:47

prawntoast I'm 5'3" and started at 11st2lbs.,which is a BMI of about 27.My initial weight loss goal is 10 st . I may reassess then. I'm an apple shape and carry everything on top and middle so Im a size 16 on top and 12/14 on bottom.
dotty well done on your loss, you'll get to 10 stone something soon Ive no doubt. Are you going anywhere nice for your 40th? Have a wonderful time! I went on a girly weekend for my 40th to Barcelona. Its my 50th this year and me and DH are going somewhere to quietly 'celebrate' ( didnt really want to let too many people know its my 50th, it sounds too old) Sorry if Ive just offended all the 50 plus's but thats how I feel.
Welcome to all the new posters and good luck tomorrow to all my fellow Thursday fasters

Breadandwine · 13/03/2013 23:02

About reaching a plateau, folks, and what to do about it:

There are several threads on the subject on the 52FastDiet forum

Haven't read them myself, but there might be something useful there!

peplum41 · 14/03/2013 00:34

Hi chaps, got a few minutes spare to check my fave thread.
bread&wine you really are cute with your veganism and pencil holding parties! The insomnia is a long term problem, but has got much worse since starting this woe, I feel really pepped! In some ways that's great, but I've had about 6 hours sleep in 4 days. Not sure this can be good for my health. And no, I'm not drinking loads of coffee.

mehefin no the company I work for do not provide health checks.
I was attracted to this woe by the diet pros, but its the health side that will keep me on it. I always felt uneasy about atkins, seemed so unnatural.

daddyorchips loved that advert, great name! You seemed well on your way to a 2nd fast day earlier.

peplum41 · 14/03/2013 00:49

Hello also to nettnett. You seem to be in good health. How long have you been doing pilates? It's my fave form of exercise, but I'm rubbish at disciplining myself to stick to it. I'm good at sticking to walking because I have a dog, and enjoy the fresh air, even when its too fresh.
Sorry to hear about your DM, really hope that 5:2 can make a difference for future generations.

Nettnett · 14/03/2013 03:28

Hi Peplum, I've been doing pilates for 10 years, started after my hip replacement 11 years ago, needed something a little more low impact than the body balance I was doing before.
It works well for me, keeps the arthritis at bay, and appears to be a regime I can maintain as the Ravages of Time (ROT!) sets in...
My friend on the neighbouring mat is 82 and still going strong, so with any luck...

storminabuttercup · 14/03/2013 03:46

Well, as a WOE 5:2 is definitely doing something to me, as I mentioned before I'm on an eating day, I haven't gone crazy, eggs and beans on toast at lunch then curry and cheesecake for tea with a few glasses of wine, I've woken up with a horrid too full sicky feeling, terrible heartburn and have actually been sick, I'm convinced its because of eating such rich food which I haven't done for the last few weeks. I still feel 'too full' and will be definitely avoiding eating that much again!
Before I could polish off a takeaway, dessert and then coffee and chocolates.
From now on ill be sticking to one lot of rich food, and definitely not with wine!

Breadandwine · 14/03/2013 04:38

Storm I hate to be the bearer of bad news - but what you describe doesn't sound like rich food to me. Hope I'm wrong and you're fighting fit in the morn! Smile

B&W I'd be interested in some pencil holding activities if you'd be kind enough to pass them along!

I'll gladly do that, Betsy. I'll PM you when I get them all together.

Basically, there are three games, 'Bump the finger', 'Yellow/blue games', and 'Yellow/blue names'. They take the child from learning to hold a pencil to writing their own name. Great fun!

I'll get onto it later today. It'll be good for me to do this since my daughter is 16 weeks pregnant with her first. SmileSmile Grin SmileSmile

In some ways that's great, but I've had about 6 hours sleep in 4 days. Not sure this can be good for my health. And no, I'm not drinking loads of coffee. LOL!! Cute, eh? I'll run that past my wife later on today! Smile

Ironic we should have been discussing insomnia earlier. Here it is at 4.17 and I've been awake from 3.00am. I've only had an hour's sleep - and, like yourself, I'm buzzing! This happens every 6 weeks or so since I've been on this WOL, generally after writing out recipes or similar too close to bed time. Not tonight, all I did was make some bread, which should have relaxed me!

I made some white bread rolls after coming in from work earlier, and, after fasting all day, I've just polished off two of them with some homemade ginger marmalade. I'm hoping that tiredness will hit me soon - but in the meantime it gives me a chance to chat to you guys!

I didn't need the rolls, since I'd had a load of chilli non carne for dinner, followed by an Alpro pudding with half a banana. I was absolutely stuffed!

But the rolls looked so lovely - and my marmalade is so tasty. Lucky I didn't eat 3 of them, I suppose. Grin

To compensate, I won't eat any breakfast in the morning. I've been maintaining since November, and while I don't want to lose any more weight, I certainly don't want to put any on. I gained an extra three belt holes whilst losing 10kg, and I've been teetering on the verge of cutting another one. I can tell exactly where I am with my weight by seeing how much extra belt I can pull through after the last hole. It varies between 1.5" and 0.5" - and I've no intention of going back a notch.

Fortunately, this WOL allows you to fine tune your weight, once you get down to your chosen weight. And I'm pretty sure all you guys reading this will get there!

Have a great day, everyone, fasters and feeders alike! Smile

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2013 06:29

well i'm a happy bunny. scales say 11.2.6 after an eat day and today is a fast day so hoping i'll see a record low tomorrow. 6 weeks and 12lbs for me now (if i don't bounce up again). think i'm on track for seeing under 10st next week.

strawberry - as others say you could check what you're eating over a week now - having lost weight your calorific needs have gone down so it's possible you're eating at a higher level than your needs. someone else said about having a 6:1 week or a bit of a blow out and that kick starting things again. as illogical as it sounds i think that's what happened with me last week. had a bit of an eating week due to work events and birthdays and what not and my weight appeared to bounce back up loads but this week with fasts and on eat days it is going down and back below what it was before the eat and going down well again. who knows. i did read that we need to mix things up a bit so our body doesn't get too cosey - so having a blow out, changing the time of day you eat, doing two fasts in a row or having a week off could be the shake up it needs to kick start back into fat burning on fasts.

fast day and it's a busy one. meeting my boss at train station, heading to london, finding where it is we're going and walking there, bit of a seminar and networking event then back on the train. then i have to do some bits in town and get back here in time for parents evening at 6. hoping all that will keep me busy, distracted and using energy.

good luck to everyone today who is fasting especially newcomers. it really does get easier and it really does work so stick at it Smile

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2013 06:32

for the insomniacs - i have sleep issues myself and one thing i do find helpful is switching off the lights and laying down and relaxing listening to a guided meditation. i'm not 'trying' to sleep, i'm trying to relax and switch off which takes the pressure off and lets my body relax and switch down without my mind winding it up again.

there are some good free podcast guided meditations here that i'd recommend. i try to mix it up so i don't listen to the same one twice in a row so my mind can't predict what's coming and get active itms.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 14/03/2013 07:17

Proof that fat scales are a waste of time:

Yesterday & last few weeks have been consistently at around 37-38% this morning 42%. I don't think I've increased fat % by that much in 24 hours....

Wishihadabs · 14/03/2013 07:41

This is my 4th week. Still no weight loss. Waist has gone from 27.5" to 25.5". Sleep disturbance is a real issue (can't remember the last time I slept through) not just on fast days. Also menstrual irregularity seems to be rearing its head. Not 100% convinced this is good for me (37 years old, BMI 22)

Daisy1407 · 14/03/2013 08:09

Food day... Porridge and honey for me!

Good luck fellow fasters x
