5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

daisy1047 yes I did completed my fast yesterday. Went just over 500... another one tomorrow.. goin to get the chicken and chorizo soup again that was bludy lovely. How r u getting on with ur fast today?

systemsaddict · 13/03/2013 09:51

Successfully fasted yesterday - ridiculously busy and stressful day in many respects (work and children). I ate less then planned in the day - just a small bowl of soup at lunchtime - and was freezing cold in the afternoon.

Kids were both extremely exhausted and very very difficult when I got home, and dealing with that and bedtimes meant I didn't eat my delicious Hmm Weightwatchers ready meal until after 9pm. By which point I was feeling really quite rubbish and ended up slumped with no energy for anything - but it is the first fast day I have felt like that (4th one overall).

I got up this morning and ate a load of rubbish! but feel better now - and I look thinner in the mirror. But just the fact that this is still do-able on a really difficult day is reassuring.

monster54 · 13/03/2013 09:53

dines where's the chicken and chorizo soup from/receipe sounds GOOD!!!

I'm going to keep going to lunch I think and have some warm soup!

And a low cal dins, I might go over my 500 slightly but surely that's better than not at all hey!!

dines · 13/03/2013 10:04

monster54 its front waitrose 284 cals for the whole tub 600ml so is very filling on a fast day with a bit of bread.

mehefin · 13/03/2013 10:26

peplum41 the massive reduction in side effects from working nights is the biggest short term benefit for me of 5:2. Weight loss will hopefully be medium term benefit and better health long term.

Do you get regular medical checks from your employer ? I don't but would be interesting if someone was.

It's good that sliced white bread seems to be losing it's attraction at 4 o'clock in the morning for us !
Breadandwine · 13/03/2013 10:31

Great post, swallowed - I've stuck it on the Tips thread so it doesn't get lost.

I am absolutely full of a terrible head cold. Feeling dizzy etc.

Off work today but its my fast day.....I WANT to fast but don't want to make myself worse. Do I not bother and have an eating day? Stick with my fast or do a mini fast?

monster whenever I've felt unwell on this WOL I've just changed my fast day(s). Spoil yourself today and fast again later. You're in this for the long term, don't forget! Smile

greenfig · 13/03/2013 10:42

Morning all! Went a bit over 500 cals yesterday but not yet hungry today so only had coffee. Walked the dog & now off to do a Jillian so should work out to be a mini fast naturally today. Then a monster clean is long overdue on the agenda. I am NEVER going to drink again, not that I've ever said THAT beforeHmm
I need your dream itsaboat toast & cheese are my downfall. & wineBlush I just can't drink any more, I'm rubbish at it, I get sooo ill!!! Poor old lady....
Am off to get some of this soup you all speak so highly of for tomorrows fast. Have a good day all.

mummyof2girlsx · 13/03/2013 10:43

Thanks Itsaboatjack good luck to you too with your second in a row!

Yum dines that soup does sound good, think a trip to waitrose may be in order Grin

monster54 a little over 500 will be fine, I have gone slightly over plenty of times and still lost weight

Breadandwine · 13/03/2013 10:48

mehefin and others. I've been watching your conversation about fasting and working shifts with interest.

I used to work nights and remember well how they made me feel. It's fantastic that fasting is helping with the 'jet-lag'. Smile

About insomnia (do you mean after the night shift?) - I found that if I tried to sleep as soon as I got home, I'd be awake by 11 and be unable to go back again. But if I delayed sleeping until about 10, or 10.15, I could sleep through until 4 or 5.

I used to go round to a local playgroup and teach pencil control to the kids for an hour. (Just remembered this - I've got a few games/ideas if anyone is interested.) Kids loved it and so did I! Smile

mehefin · 13/03/2013 11:03

Breadandwine it's usually an episode of Homes under the Hammer before bed for me - far less socially useful !

Daisy1407 · 13/03/2013 11:30

Morning all
Another day off work as not feeling 100% however I'm still in bed so haven't had anything to eat/drink yet! Black coffees coming up (ewww but gas to be done)
Well done dines - amazing!! Yeah that soup is BeAutiful isn't it! Sooooo filling too! Not sure what to have for tea tonight a trip to waitrose or M&S is on the cards x

Gods luck fasters x

plecofjustice · 13/03/2013 11:35

Fasting again for me and it's celery for lunch (350g - takes 45 mins to eat and only 25 cals!! Grin), a 95cal snack from my GRaze box when I get home from work, and vegetarian broccoli pizza for dinner! Nom

monster54 · 13/03/2013 12:40

I've had a 200cal soup and DH has made a homemade quiche for tonight so I'm going to have some of that guilt free. I'll end up a mini fast me thinks and then fast fully Friday.

I'm stocking up on that soup for sure! Sounds delish!!!!

Itsaboatjack · 13/03/2013 12:53

Feeling hungry today. I've been at a briefing all morning then about 40mins back on tube, so didn't want to drink as much as normal as few chances for a toilet break. Back at base now though so having a green tea and pint of water. Not feeling tempted by anything in particular though so I should be able to just ride through the hunger wave.

greenfig cheese and wine are always a temptation :)

IDismyname · 13/03/2013 13:01

This is fast day number 4 for me, and the first one that I've been mainly at home for.

GAWD - Its hard!! I thought they were supposed to get easier, but I need to plan at staying away for as much of the day as poss.

Its great to just come on here and read other comments esp those that say that the best effects come after 16 hrs or so of fasting. I'm on 17 hrs - a little way to go yet...!

BlackMaryJanes · 13/03/2013 13:02

Isn't it great when you wake up the morning after a fast - knowing you have yet another fast under your belt :)

However - the insomnia. Not good Hmm

greenfig · 13/03/2013 13:18

bread&wine Any top tips on how to motivate 11 yo boysGrin He can hold his pencil, just doesn't want to do much with itHmm & I'm trying to steer clear of alcohol, he drives me to it!!

plecofjustice · 13/03/2013 13:29

Is there something he's really interested in that you could use as a springboard - football, computers, dinosaurs, nature, anything like that? Is he still primary, or gone to secondary? If primary, would his teachers agree with him being able to research and write about something of his own choice?

greenfig · 13/03/2013 13:42

Thanks plecofjustice Just gone to secondary. Clever boy but lazylacks focus. Unfortunately its v hard to find a lever with him. doesn't mind coming bottom but is pleased if he does well, have put lots of incentives in place, but he's just not that bothered! V sweet though, got to keep it in perspective & lay off the wineGrin I'm sure the frustration is burning up those cals!

VenusRising · 13/03/2013 13:56

Hi everyone.
I've been fasting 5:2 for a few weeks, and don't think I've lost anything as I tend to overcompensate on my feed days.

Should I start to fast 4:3 instead?
I don find the fasting hard at all, but tend to scoff chocolate etc on the next day.

Yesterday for eg I went till 4 without eating, and then had a half a pear, and an ice lolly(fruitjuice- 90 cals) and then had a roast pork and pear dinner, about 120g pork and a roast pear, with about 20g of potato.
Boy did I have a headache though, had about three cups of coffee in the morning- anyone else getting headaches? And yes, to the flakey, dry nails. :(

Dotty342kids · 13/03/2013 14:04

Venusrising, you might find it useful tracking your eating day calories on something like My Fitness Pal? I certainly did to start with and when you realise the amount of calories in every little bit of chocolate versus the decent sized meal you can have for the same amount of calories, it does tend to focus you a bit! I'm a complete chocoholic and it helps me to do this. Or, work out your meal calories in advance and let yourself have whatever remaining calories there are, in chocolate form!
But you must, must, must stay well hydrated on fast days. Not only will drinking water / herbal teas take your mind off feeling hungry but it's crucial to replace the water that you'd normally get through your food.

greenfig · 13/03/2013 14:09

I googled the flaky nails & found it was nutritionally due to sugar overload which wouldn't make sense with 5:2?? I was putting mine down to cold weather, maybe there's some other nutritional reason. Sorry to hear you're not having much luck. Lots of water for the headaches, could also be contributing to lack of losses. Scoffing choc's not going to help thoughGrin
Can you try to stay within your TDEE for a couple of weeks to see if it helps? Lots of people have found the need to binge on feed days wears off quite quickly. Don't lose heartSmile

Daisy1407 · 13/03/2013 14:26

I've only had 2 coffees and a pint of water -I need to up my drinks! Harder when off wrk!

daddyorchipsdaddyorchips · 13/03/2013 14:45

Well, my first fast day, yesterday, went pretty well! At some points, late afternoon, I did feel very hungry but I kept on with the water, had my dinner (lentil, chilli and chickpea soup - yum) and felt full. Went to be, had a GREAT night's sleep and woke up this morning feeling no more hungry than normal.

I skipped breakfast today (a food day), because I just didn't feel like it. I had a cuppa and a biscuit about 11 and then as lunchtime came around I still didn't feel that hungry. I left it a while and have now had some soup as I won't have dinner 'til late this evening.

All in all, not as bad as expected. Next fast day tomorrow and quite looking forward to it.

Anja1Cam · 13/03/2013 14:54

Re the flaky nails I also wanted to add it takes about 3 month for a nail to grow 1cm so any flakiness you are seeing now was caused during it's formation in the nail bed, so any problems you see coming out now have more to do with your nutrition in the past?
