5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

headinclouds, if it makes you feel any better I stayed the same after yesterday's fast and only lost 100g following the previous fast! Mine seems to drop sharply (eg more than a pound!) a couple of days later, randomly Hmm

Headintheclouds - for what it's worth, that's the reason that I made a deliberate decision not to weigh myself for 3 months after starting this WOE/weight loss regime.
My feelings were that if I'd stuck to the plan religiously and walked every day, a weight loss of only 1 or 2 pounds, while positive, would actually demotivate me.
All that effort for a couple of pounds when I have several stone to lose would feel like a real bummer.
So today, finding I've lost 22 pounds has given me a real boost and encouraged me to stick at it.
Some fluid retention around menstruation time is not unusual and may account for the lack of change in your weight at this time.

headintheclouds · 13/03/2013 00:33

amazing loss wingedharpy . I wish I had the self discipline to stay away from the scales for 3 months. You are quite right about the demotivater of seeing very little weight loss though. Ive weighed myself at least weeklyoften with half-closed eyes and my right big toe on the floor-- and accurately for all of my adult life. i may give it a longer stretch before weighing !

Hi all. Just doing a night shift, hence the time. Noticed mehefin and carrot&parsnip do too. I've noted your tips, what I'm trying is having my snack,eg a butty or soup when I get my jobs done about 1 am, then fasting til tea time the next day. This I do on my last shift so I can go to bed that night. Been doing this almost a month, and already eat far less on nights than before. Plus I don't get that sickly feeling at about 5am, which I used to solve by eating toast. Plus more alert! Only con is insomnia, whether working or not.

Ooh scuse double post. Got confused!

This thread got me through a strong chocolate craving before. Well over it now and looking forward to next fast day (and last night shift ). I think I've found a new addiction

whatsforyou · 13/03/2013 06:19

Itsaboat

Aww, there was me so chuffed with myself too!
To be honest I knew it wouldn't be that accurate, there things never are but it did give me a wee boost so I'll use it as a comparison tool probably too boost me on a bit!

frenchfancy · 13/03/2013 06:54

Leetleloo It sounds to me like you are doing just fine. The shakes din't do it for me but I understand that they are easy. Tip talks a lot of sense but she is pretty hard core.

mummyof2girlsx · 13/03/2013 06:59

Morning all, good luck to all Wednesday fasters. I am attempting my third fast in a row for the first time.....wish me luck! I normally fast mon wed and fri but I have a busy and indulgent long weekend planned starting tomorrow with dh's birthday and then our wedding anniversary at the weekend.

Just been looking on the recipe thread and lots of tasty recipes for fast days, thanks everyone Smile

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 07:06

morning Smile

managed a proper fast yesterday (after ending up only doing a mini on monday after biscuit cravings). had less than 500 in the end - a small glass of wine and a can of baked beans with a spoon of philly light and a little chilli oil (yum) stirred in.

this morning the scales say 11.3.6 so i'm back on track. that illusive 11.2.4 i saw not so long back is within reach. would love to be under 11 by the end of next week and i'm kind of due it after a stall week but we shall see.

today will be a 'mini-fast' hopefully. aiming to do my thing of 3 minis and 2 propers on weekdays this week. so another proper tomorrow. i'm in london much of the day tomorrow so will be busy with trains and seminars and stuff and won't get home till early evening so hopefully that will be an easy fast day. i have company on the train so should be easier to avoid buying munchies than when i'm on my own and bored.

to those wondering over 'proper ways to do it':

basically there is a principle that a 24hr fast is really good for the body but an awareness that that is difficult for some. even a day of drastically reduced calories is good for you re: 500 as in the 5:2.

the 'ideal' would be to have a full 24hrs of nothing then eat your 500 at the end of the day (so fasting from tea one night to tea the next then having 500cals so you get to go to bed satiated). it's one to work towards.

any extended fast for example 16hrs (from teatime to lunch) or 20hrs (maybe tea time to late afternoon) is good for you and allows better access to fat burning whilst also giving your digestive system a good rest amongst other things.

some of us were natural breakfast avoiders anyway so it was easy to extend that out to lunchtime or for those like me who regularly didn't eat till the afternoon it was not such a stretch to try to go through to teatime. it can be done very gradually - just extend it. if you're a breakfast eater try eating a little when you get to work instead of when you get up then stretch it out to 10, 11 etc till you're going through to lunch.

if you're just looking for weight loss and spreading your 500 over the day is working for you then stick with it - if later you want to start getting more health benefits or if your weight loss stalls you can try this way of extending gaps between eating.

this is flexible.

sorry for essay. incidentally the 24hr figure seems to be because from 12hrs up to 24hrs the benefits are all going up - growth hormone release, dropping levels of nasties, easy fat burn access, increased metabolism etc and the benefits seem to peak at 24hrs and taper off there after. so 24hrs is the 'best' effects zone - any hours over 12 and up to 24 are hours where good stuff is definitely happening.

Itsaboatjack · 13/03/2013 07:33

Just been dreaming about eating toast, I kept burning it though and finally when I did get a non burnt bit I started eating it and it turned to paper. Very strange.

Successful fast day yesterday, going for two in a row today. Good luck mummyof2girls with your three in a row today.

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 07:35

ooh your subconscious is banning bread itsaboat Grin good to have it on your side.

Dotty342kids · 13/03/2013 08:02

headintheclouds don't despair! I was stuck last week (time of the month for me) and in fact seemed to have put 1lb back on.
However weighing yesterday, I'd dropped to a new low of 11st 1lb which I was really pleased with. Have "bounced" back to 11st 2lb today but seeing as that was my new low last week, that's ok.
Well done for getting under 11st - I'll be so excited when that happens for me (hopefully by end March).
It's my 40th in April, am having big weekend away with all my friends and want to be feeling and looking good!

Itsaboatjack · 13/03/2013 08:12

I hope so saf, it would be about time. You could be right though, the thought of eating toast now has no appeal.

swallowedAfly · 13/03/2013 08:24

i honestly think it's a great sign itsaboat. it's your subconscious integrating a new attitude to food and eating. isn't there something about how it takes a certain amount of time for a new behaviour/pattern to become habitual? if something new is repeated for that amount of time then the brain adjusts and makes it the norm. i'm only partly being tongue in cheek saying your subconscious is getting on your side Smile

Minimammoth · 13/03/2013 08:37

Quick post to say I have lost 1 lb. hrah. Many ups and downs but I think ths is a 'settling' weight reading. Fingers crossed. Am trying talkin' s miss breakfast idea.

monster54 · 13/03/2013 08:52

Ok ladies, I need some advice. I am absolutely full of a terrible head cold. Feeling dizzy etc.

Off work today but its my fast day.....I WANT to fast but don't want to make myself worse. Do I not bother and have an eating day? Stick with my fast or do a mini fast?

mistlethrush · 13/03/2013 09:04

monster - does this absolutely have to be a fast day? I move my fast days around in the week to suit what I'm doing that week.

monster54 · 13/03/2013 09:15

Well no I could move it to tomorrow, might be better. I like to do mon, wed and mini fast Fri. I usually go to an exercise class on a Thurs and don't like fasting on same day but way things are going I don't think I'll be feeling up to it! Sat and Sun are out with meals planned :o/ urrrggghhh I'm such a terrible sick person!

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 13/03/2013 09:22

Monster - do you feel that eating will help? Maybe see how you go on water/hot drinks for the morning, reassess at lunch and you never know, might be easier! I know I find it easier to fast when feeling poorly as I don't fancy food!

So, second fast day this week, started yesterday at 5.30pm. It's going well today, except that my boiler is broken and the house is cold! Going to do some exercise now though I think - over an hour of yoga Grin

CorrieDale · 13/03/2013 09:23

Fasting today. But this chesty cold is really starting to get to me. I haven't been able to do any proper cardio exercise in about 3 weeks. And I can't even whine about it because I can see people thinking (even if they don't say it) 'it's the fasting!' Err, no, it's a virus... Had yesterday off with bed and daytime telly and feeling a bit better today. No Pilates this morning though - saving my energy for Taekwon do tonight!

Prawntoast · 13/03/2013 09:26

head, I've been through 2 monthly cycles on this woe so far and it hasn't stopped the weight loss. I haven't yet reached a plateau but fully expect to at some stage. Having read of others experience on this thread though has prepared me for it so mentally I think I will cope with the disappointed better. I also think that because I don't feel like I am on a diet it won't pee me off as much anyway as I don't find the fasting that difficult and for 5 days I'm not depriving myself, whereas on previous diets everyday has been a drag. I think everyone is different, some women do retain water in the run up to a period. Interestingly I would never advise weighing after exercise as your body retains fluid afterwards.

You don't say how tall you are so I don't know how overweight you are but a lb a week is a good loss, I've lost a stone and it's averaged out at between 1 and 1.5lbs per week, with a loss of nearly 4lbs in the first week but I started at 11.6 and I am 5'2" and have a small frame so I need to lose around 2.5 to 3st in total.

monster54 · 13/03/2013 09:26

Thanks SCET....yes I've not had anything but a couple of cups of coffee this morning...

Will reassess at lunch and maybe have some soup, then a smaller dinner than usual. Seems a shame to throw all the hardwork away. I know I'll be upset if I fall off the 5:2 wagon cos of this!!

mistlethrush · 13/03/2013 09:40

Monster - you don't need to fall off the waggon - you can simply move the day to a different one.

I aim to do Mon and Weds each week - then if I have a wobble on Monday, its Tues and Thurs - or if I manage Monday I've only got to fit in another between Weds and Friday....

Mentally I find it easier when I'm not having to supply snacks and food to DS all day long!
