Fasting / 5:2 diet

5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

x posted - thanks bvb. i 'think' i'll be alright with sipping wine - it's the glugging of wine on a late afternoon/early evening that would tend to make me go home and stuff myself.

whiskey is not a bad idea. i think a sippy drink as the 'last thing of the day' treat would probably work well for me with fasting. better that than reaching for biscuits or such.

Thanks betsy. I will probably be under on Thursday, so should equal out. I find even on eating days it pays to plan what I eat at tea so I know what calories I have for the day, say I know my main meal comes in at 800 cals I know I've got 1200 for other meals, I'm not a breakfast eater, so that helps.

As for wine on fast days I wouldn't because I know I'd want another glass, although on a bad day last week I was tempted to forgo the food and just have wine.

I do like a glass of two of wine on an evening but considering the calories and the obvious health issues I'm only having two wine nights a week.

On Sunday I'd dropped 7lb but it seems to have gone up by four pounds since. I think I'm weighing myself way too much. Going to try and stick to one weigh day a week.

Saf Foods affect my mood massively, I'm particularly sensitive to sugar and it has an accumulative effect so that it makes me very grumpy/angry in the mornings if I've been overdoing it. Similarly an accumulation of stodgy carbs (plus salt, butter) will make me feel lethargic and depressed. This is why I love this WOE as it acts as a reset AND I completely avoid all those foods on fast days.

My energy levels are improved too (when not bloody ill with colds!) - I don't know if this is because of the fasting or because fasting makes me eat incredibly healthily. Healthy eating (ie lots of fresh fruit, veg, nuts, seeds, fish) makes me zingy and energetic.

Mummy of two 100g of dry pasta is about 350 calories so 40g dry will be about 140 calories

mumoftwo as ELR has pointed out - that sounds more like cooked weight than dried weight, even then it's a little over optimistic...some of the mpf figures are entered by users and sometimes they are a tad inaccurate.

Have just made laska's curry for tomorrow night, it smells amazing! I had my last calories at half seven tonight and hoping for a 24hr true fast before I break it. Feeling really positive because after a fast day yesterday I didn't put anything on after my huge mother's day pig out!

Does anyone else use map my run? Not that I run but my main exercise is walking with the buggy. I used it today and it said I burnt off 450cal, I'm thinking given I was pushing a buggy laden with shopping at the time it could even be more! I had no idea I could burn off so much walking but it has really motivated me to make more of an effort!

I am marking my place, but have to say I am failing on the fast days. I am managing low cals, but not proper fast. Guess this is just how I have to do it. Not much change in weight though.

Report
Talkinpeace · 12/03/2013 21:28

how do you mean "failing"?
start your count at the end of supper the night before
drink lots of tea and coffee and water
and see if you can skip breakfast and lunch and then have a WHOLE tub of fresh soup for supper and see if you can make it to breakfast
each of those stages is a step in the right direction

Minimammoth · 12/03/2013 21:32

Thanks for the ideas talkin I am always hungry for breakfast, but I will give it a go.

Talkinpeace · 12/03/2013 21:33

OK, breakfast : 2 scrambled eggs on a thin slice of ham.
THen nothing all day and then the soup.
THat will be 200 in the morning, 300 in the evening with 3 x 8 hour gaps
which will start to do you good.

Hi everyone, been doing 3:4 and this is my 2nd week. It's going well but just reading through the thread I've been wondering if I am doing it right? Am I supposed to not eat anything at all for 24 hours? I read people talking about true fast, nothing passing lips till after certain time etc. I have been eating normally, say dinner about 8, going to bed and then when I wake up spreading my 500 cals through out the fast day and then going to bed and waking up to eat normally again.

Talkinpeace, that sounds like 2 days of fasting? I am confused Blush. So I need have no supper night before a fast day, then nothing till dinner time and then again nothing till next day lunch. On the 3:4 my fast days would all merge together. I am not having solids at all as using up my cambridge diet shakes on fast days. So today was fast day: yesterday I ate my dinner at 7pm, then had nothing until my shake at 12pm, had another shake (136 cals) at 5pm and had another at 8.30. Few cups of tea through out day and my water. Do you think it sounds ok?

I'm pretty strict on fasts cos I eat and drink too much at weekens
AND I always skip breakfast so skipping lunch (which I have now done twice a week for 8 months) is just a teeny step.
That and when I'm working (so not at the gym) my TDEE is only 1500 ...

your system sounds fine if its working for you : if you can, try to lengthen one of the gaps between solid food to between 16 and 24 hours - that is when the health benefits start to really kick in.

I have been fasting since jan9th. Not continuously, obviouslySmile. On Mondays I eat nothing until Bout 4.oo when I have a cars water biscuit at approximate 14 calories. Then I have a homemade pizza, topped with peppers and mushrooms. I eat under 500 calories on this day. On wedI do the same thing and in the evening I have a peice of fish cooked in the oven and a massive plate of salad. Again I eat under 500 calories. I drink plenty of water and have the odd slice of apple or pineapple here and there. I have not weighed myself. I don't know what weight I started at and what I am now, but I do know I have lost. I can see it and I can feel it.

whatsforyou, I've not used that site particularly but have used my fitness pal and Nike plus as well as other running apps. Imo, as well as varying vastly from each other, I think they all over estimate. I actually got myself a Polar heart monitor today, and whilst I've not done a run yet I did wear it for the school run this afternoon. I walked 40mins at 3mph. Mfp gave me 165 cals, the heart rate monitor said 115 cals, so mfp gave me nearly 50% more than I had actually used. I did a run last weekend that mfp gave me 1007 cals for, I'm going to do the same run this weekend and am quite interested to see what the difference will be.

Back from a fast 30 minute walk on the beach before heading into a busy day.

This WOE is so amazing. I feel entirely free of the 'diet' mentality, and delighted with the side-effects (weight-loss) of 5:2.

Before starting 5:2 just before Christmas, most of even my stretchy pants (trousers) were in fact way too tight. (I was wearing sml or med in those but stretched to the limit - not a good feel or look.) For non-stretch, I was struggling to fit into a standard size 14 - sometimes a 16.

Now - having ditched the sugar & junk that was creeping up on me - I am an easy size 10. I have just bought two pairs of new jeans (on sale together). High-rise, slim-leg, one black & one dark blue. Had almost forgotten how good a pair of well-cut non-stretch pants can feel ///emo/te/1.gif

In this new mode, I am slowly introducing new and better habits - esp. exercising, which has begun to take on new pleasure. I actually look forward to my walks and stretching, and feel disappointed when for some reason I can't fit it in my day.

This is all very new to me, but is not throwing me off balance the way previous weight loss has.

Hope you are all having the best day you possibly can

dotty Im doing okay, thanks for asking. I didnt lose last week at all- I fasted yesterday and weighed in today and have stayed the same, but my ' official' weigh in that I count is after my second fast of the week( so Friday morning weigh in for me is the one I record.)
Im 10st 10 which is 6 lbs off after 6 weeks.Im really hoping for 7 lbs total on Fridays WI!Possiblly Too much info but it is my time of month which may be why Ive stuck this week. Does anyone else get no weight loss when its their period? Ive absolutely stuck to this WOE 100% and not gone over TDEE on the 5 normal days. Im a bit impatient/ intolerant of slow weight loss and envious of those people who've reported impressive big lossesEnvy
