5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Just checking in. Fasting today. So far: two huge glasses of water in front of the laptop while reading all the new posts. Great to get such a wide perspective on 5:2.

Huge possible changes in my life just ahead. Am having very weird time doing my best to remain positive (that change will come) versus accepting possible failure (that it won't).

Meanwhile I am just so pleased that my body has given up so much of its fat! It's like I finally decided I was sick of it. (Sick from it?)

Talkinpeace · 20/03/2013 19:53

Am losing willpower at the moment - have no specific weight to lose, but want the health benefits, but am working stupid hours for the next few months.
If the sun would come out it would help.

monster54 · 20/03/2013 20:09

Hmmmm tip I can imagine that's a real tough one! I can't wait to get there but I can see your dilemma!

Is there a certain feeling you get from fasting that you could focus on achieving as opposed to weight loss?

BsshBossh · 20/03/2013 20:09

TiP as you're a gym bunny why don't you shift focus and follow Leangains 16:8, weight training, looking at your macronutrients for a bit (perhaps still throwing in a 24 hr fast here and ther too). It's an interesting regime that's mentally challenging/interesting too. May appeal to you?

Talkinpeace · 20/03/2013 20:31

Grin Cheers my dears.
Its the work hours that are knocking me out at the moment - kids to school then me to work, home by 6, am still writing reports, ready to do it all again somewhere else tomorrow. And so on four days a week till the end of June!
I get my Fridays at the gym though Wink

Monster
Weight loss is not really an issue (BMI is under 21), and you are right, I love the clarity that hits 16 hours into a fast. Will focus on that, even if I do not stick to 500 calories at supper.

Bssh
Mentally challenging is the antithesis of what I need at the moment : I really fancied a swim but got home so late I knew the pool would be full of the tattooed muscle men so chickened out.

Maybe the sun will shine tomorrow.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/03/2013 20:44

TIP the lack of sun is draining after a while.

I admit, I'm keeping up with fasts but not weighing myself (am sure I've, at the very least, not put any back on. Might even be losing small amounts still) because I've had several weeks of things happening, moving house, mum visiting (still here, lots of meals out and her cooking) etc. Before this WOE I'd just have had to deal with the stess of the 'guilt' of eating the wrong foods. It's such a nice feeling to not feel guilty for enjoying certain foods.

Next week I'll be back in proper eating mode, mum will be gone :( so no more homemade chicken pie etc.

BVB
thank you for your message re my skin, sorry took so long to reply. Busy work week
I have lost 8lbs in total since around mid January - prob more like 10 but I am still bouncing around a bit. Happy but still have a bit to go. If I manage another 4lbs I will be chuffed. Am ok about AFD but had one crying into cauliflower moment when I was feeling sorry for myself. Am feeling good other than the spots though

HotPanda · 20/03/2013 21:19

i've just had an eating day, and eaten 1430 calories. Still a bit less than the TDEE but I'm full. Feeling good though as worked hard at the gym.

I'm going to go for another fast day tomorrow, that will make the 3rd one since starting on Sunday. Is that too many?

BetsyVanBell · 20/03/2013 21:22

maza Oops, have no idea what I said - was it spots or dry skin that's the problem? Was having a think about that this morning as I'm prone to breakouts on my nose and something that's put paid to that is using Lush's Angels On Bare Skin scrub - I can see there's times when my nose is trying to have a flare up but a good daily scrub of that stuff (twice daily sometimes) has stopped the zits in their track.

For dry (non face) skin I scrub with a dry loofah pad or scrubby mit, shower, then moisturise. Seems to do the trick for me! As I think I said, I think it's because I'm paying more attention to my skin since I've been taking more care of myself in general that it is in better condition, rather than because of the fasting - a side effect of sorts I suppose!

Yup, I get zits and dry flaky skin, ain't I the lucky one?!

Oh TiP Surely some bloody sunshine would do us all some good, so utterly sick of winter.

wildwater · 20/03/2013 21:47

...wish I could send all you 'winter' people a taste of late summer NZ sunshine.

Just got back from a fast walk along the beach. Mopped the kitchen floor, then on to hanging out the washing - something I love esp. on gloriously fine days!

Today we (me and my beloved) will eat ramen soup (from the Telegraph site) around 3.30, possibly a frozen banana smoothie (under 100 cal) before that. That's it for the day.

Looking forward to weighing again after Sunday fast. Hopefully my guts will have processed everything that was 'backing up' and I will have lost another pound or so. But if not that's OK. It does take time to get used to being thinner when you have been overweight for a long time. Slow is just fine.

Cheers & sunshine to you all.

sweetkitty · 20/03/2013 21:48

My first day has been a disaster Hmm caved in at 3pm and had a bowl of cereal, I was cold, shaking, light headed, feeling utterly awful. Then had a jacket potato for dinner. To cap it all off I then got the trots. Had stomach pains and bad erm wind then just pooed my insides out.

I will try again on Friday.

Is anyone else a veggie, am looking for daily meal plans for 500 cals on a veggie diet.

HmmHmmHmmHmmHmm

Talkinpeace · 20/03/2013 22:07

sweetkitty
cereal and potatoes are not good fast day foods.
scrambled eggs are really good, or tubs of vegetable soup (a whole one is under 300 calories)

Northstarmum · 20/03/2013 22:16

sweetkitty I've been doing this for a few months but have never made it to 3pm without eating. I have soup for lunch on fast days, usually about 1pm then an early dinner of eg an omelette or stir fry veg with some chicken. I don't often manage to get right down to below 500 cal but I'm working towards it. Carbs are yummy but best for eating days!

HotPanda · 20/03/2013 22:31

Oh and I haven't been for a poo since Sunday. I assume this is bad?

maza66 · 20/03/2013 22:37

Thank you BVB I will try the Lush stuff. looooove their products! am sure its also weather related. I live in the west coast of scotland but work in the east so get the worst of the weather combined with city grime! but it is definitely worse. I have more spots than I did as a teenager and am way past the age for this now. Not funny. I am also wondering if stepping up my gym attendance is impacting on this as I am generally more sweaty too. Next fast has started, onto my third pint of hot water and lemon which I am now addicted to.

Talkinpeace · 20/03/2013 22:40

hotpanda
not good at all
LOTS of fluid, fruit, veg and maybe fybogel needed till you are back to at least once every 24 hours
what colour is your wee? how dehydrated are you
more fluid and more veg needed

sweetkitty · 20/03/2013 22:44

I know cereal and potatoes are bad Blush I had an apple and grapes at lunch plus tea and water.

Was really shaking and lightheaded during school run, will try soup for lunch then beans for dinner on Friday.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 20/03/2013 23:22

sweetkitty we don't mean they're 'bad' foods as such (well, I wouldn't say it, they're just foods to have in moderation) but that they're bad to have on a fast day, in particular.

Many of us, even staunch carb lovers, find that eating carb-heavy foods on fast days just sparks our hunger and makes us want more food.

Also, many of us, despite being omnivores, go veggies on our fast days. Grin There's a link to the recipes thread in the OP, lots of options there. My easy out is the Our Best Vegetable soup by Covent Garden (can have the whole carton for 240ish calories). Hard boiled eggs in the fridge are a good idea.

You can do it! Remember lots of hot drinks.

Sidebar

I been dieting since last June and stick with it ( not 5.2 ) but shifted over to this for last few lbs and to maintain mixing with LC but I'm away 2nd week of Easter holidays and for first time since June I'm going to take time of and if I put few lb in then sod it know I can loose it (lost over 10 stone )

It's a holiday and we all need time out go and enjoy

TheHumancatapult · 21/03/2013 06:18

Question doing this sorry tmi but I found after fast days eating normally then means several trips to bathroom is this normal ?

postmanpatscat · 21/03/2013 06:33

sweet kitty another veggie here... my fast days are usually New York skinny butternut soup, ryvita with soft cheese, stirfry veg with quorn pieces or quorn fillets with loads of veg. had a ryvita and stirfry day yesterday and had to have a yogurt to get me up closer to 500.

swallowedAfly · 21/03/2013 06:33

i don't think a baked potato is too bad - you can have a small baked potato and a mound of veg and be quite full. i used baked potatoes as a staple for weight loss in the past when i was calorie counting. i found potato was a carb that didn't spark cravings and did fill you up well and i recall reading a lot about the good qualities of the potato.

if you like cottage cheese you can have a small baked potato with cottage cheese and veg for quite few cals but a good full plateful of an evening.

cereal though - avoid like the plague on fast days.

if you eat eggs they're great too. if you ever get shaky and can't do it like that again i'd recommend quickly scrambling an egg and eating that. 80-90cals and you have a good solid protein inside you that should tide you over and eggs don't seem to trigger hunger in me but just satiate it.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 21/03/2013 06:36

Sweet kitty, I still eat three meals a day on fast days. So today I've had two oat cakes for breakfast, will have small box of m and s sushi for lunch and a massive salad for dinner. Should have enough cals for an apple during the day too. I figure as long as I stay under 500 cals it's fast enough for me.

swallowedAfly · 21/03/2013 06:36

i had my eat day yesterday and the scales have bounced up still further of course today.

have work all day then onto an evening event today - not sure how to handle it or if it's worth trying to make it a fast day or not. may be best putting off fast day proper till tomorrow and just having a long fast today - not eating before 6 when this event starts but then not fussing too much about calories. will see how it pans out i think.

HotPanda · 21/03/2013 07:01

Talkinpeace. Small success this morning, I ate a mountain of grapes yesterday to see if that did anything.
I drink loads each day, 2-3 litres of water and have veg at dinner every night usually. I have noticed my wee has been giving off a sweet smell, is this a sign of dehydration?
