5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well!!!! need to share, after 4 weeks of not moving on the scales or inches I have finally lost 3lb YEY!!!! I decided to do consecutive days to see if that would kick start something, and found it no more difficult than fasting on days apart. Infact I was less hungry on the second day than the first. So this is my plan for the next four weeks to see how it goes to fast two days running eek!. My thinking is that if I fail the second day I can still fast later in the week and still get two days in. But what a relief I was starting to think I was never gonna budge.

Sidebar it does get easier as you do more weeks the first two were by far the worst but the bonas of not thinking about food for the rest of the week is brill, I'm eating what I want when I'm hungry not planning lunch as soon as I've finished breakfast. It does feel like a relief from the constant diet slog x

frenchfancy · 20/03/2013 11:38

Go for it sidebar but think of it as a long term change in the way you eat and the way you look at food.

The problem IMO with quick fixes is what happens after. They don't solve the issue so the weight reappears.

The average loss seems to be about 1 lb/week so this time next year you could be 52lbs lighter. Imagine that!

Dotty342kids · 20/03/2013 11:40

sidebar planning is crucial! I menu plan for the whole week on a Sat, shop on the Sun and then am good to go.
You don't have to cook something amazing and weird on fast days if you don't want to, there are plenty of ready meals / soups etc out there which come in well under 500 cals, as do simple things like omelettes / beans on toast.
For me, cooking is part of what keeps me sane on a fast day as once I can see food being prepared then I feel better and look forward to eating it but whatever works for you, do!
And well done droopytulip, how brilliant!

Sidebar · 20/03/2013 11:42

Interesting you say that about consecutive days. Monday and Tuesday are by far the days that would work best for me fasting wise. If I'm going to be non-consecutive then it would have to be Mon and Wed or Thurs, often swapping week by week, as I have regular nights out on Wed and Thurs once a month.

One more thing, and this may be making excuses, but I'm going away for the second week of easter hols, and frankly don't fancy fasting then as we'll be eating out a lot and it will be difficult to control, and i'll be on holiday, dammit. So if I started next week I could have two weeks before going away, then one week off, then back on the following week. Is that a silly idea?

droopytulip · 20/03/2013 11:46

I did Monday and Tuesday and found no problem. The way to look at holiday is if you can lose a few pounds in a few weeks before you go the weight you may gain on holiday will take you back to where you are now. If you don't start now and you put on weight, you have more to do. Give it a try before you go, look at it as practice

BetsyVanBell · 20/03/2013 11:50

Sidebar Just go for it - have a couple of weeks doing what ever days you like then take the week off at Easter, I'm going on hols too and have no plans to fast while away Grin. It's a way of life not a diet plans - you make it fit your schedule. Good luck!

Sidebar · 20/03/2013 11:52

Thanks droopytulip and all - you have convinced me! And I'm inspired by all your positive experiences, both weight wise and just feeling healthier.

I am very much an 'all or nothing' type of person in my approach to life anyway - have learnt finally to stop fighting that about myself and just to accept it. I have big bursts of work (I'm self-employed) followed by lulls. So I think this way of eating will suit me. And frenchfancy - I'm going to copy out your statement and put it somewhere I can keep looking at it as motivatin!

I will start properly next Monday.

monster54 · 20/03/2013 11:58

Yey droopytulip it was EXACTLY the same for me.....seems static for the first 3 weeks and then bam!!!A big drop!

Glad its happened for you too I know how disappointing it can feel putting in the fasts and not getting anywhere!

Sammy3 · 20/03/2013 11:58

I'm on my 2nd fast day & it's going better than the first so skipping breakfast wasn't as bad as I'd expected (I'm a cereal junkie). Thanks for your advice GreenEggsAndNichts, Prawntoast & basildonbond. I am feeling the waves of hunger now but I've only got to make it to 1pm. I'm in the office so will probably stretch it out till 1:30 or 2 since I'm keeping busy. It's tougher when I work from home since I work from the kitchen table. Sipping water really does help you get through the hunger pangs.

sweetkitty · 20/03/2013 12:43

Hello can I join?

First ever fast day, fasted for 18 hours, just had an apple and some grapes for lunch. Feeling awful, no energy and light headed but I suppose this will pass. Only want to lose half a stone but looking for the other health benefits, I am a real sugar junkie. I have already cut out sugar in my tea this year and all fizzy drinks but chocolate is my weakness.

I also love baking, why are cakes do fattening?

Sammy3 · 20/03/2013 12:49

I've decided cakes are fattening because they taste sooo good.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 20/03/2013 12:52

Sidebar, I have 3 stone 3 lbs to lose altogether and I'm about half way now. That may not seem like much in 28 weeks, which is how long I've been doing this, but my weight loss always starts off at around a pound a week and slows down to about half a pound whatever weight loss plan I follow (at which point I usually give up and start slowly putting it all back on again) but I'm still going strong with the fasting (I do 4:3) and have no intention of giving up, even though I seem to have hit a bit of a slow patch at the moment.

I've hit a couple of slow patches before since starting and just kept on going and the weight started to come off again. This is unprecedented for me because a slow patch or a plateau on any other 'diet' would led me to give up. Because this WoE is about health benefits too, not just weight loss, it feels worth carrying on even when the weight's not coming off. Plus, because this WoE doesn't feel like a diet I'm confident I'll be able to carry on with it not just until all the weight comes off, but also use it to maintain my weight and not get fat again.

I'd say go for it. You might find, like many of us, that you'd wished you'd known about it years ago!

I weigh myself once a fortnight on the morning of the first fast day of the week so that I get a picture of a complete fortnight shown to me on the scales.

Sammy3 · 20/03/2013 12:53

sweetkitty, I'm trying to cut out sugar in my tea but it's very hard for me. I switched to green tea about 6 months ago but I like that with sugar which is sacrilege to some people. I'm down to a teaspoon & a half from my normal 2 but I'd like to cut it out completely so that I can drink tea on my fast days. So far, I've avoided it completely since I don't want to waste the precious allowance on sugar.

Sammy3 · 20/03/2013 12:56

Thank you, NurseEzzzaChapel. That's very encouraging for me too.

sweetkitty · 20/03/2013 13:10

Sammy - I've gone from 2 to 1 to no sugar in tea. I still crave it though, I Have a very sweet tooth. Don't like green tea though.

Can I have fresh orange juice diluted with sparkling water? I was thinking of this as a healthier alternative to soft drinks?

akarucker · 20/03/2013 13:50

sidebar I also have 4 stone to lose, and I am also an all or nothing type person. Obviously, my choice has been 'all' for far too long. I've been on a million diets; often lose a bit but then feel deprived and give up. The beauty of this WOE so far, I have found, is that I can indulge my 'all or nothing' mentality. Meaning, on my fast days, I feel like I'm having nothing, but know that when I wake up, I can have it ALL!
Because I'm finding it hard to shake that mentality, I'm finding that ADF works best for me. By doing alternate days I find it very maneagable, and have no fear that I can eat too much on my eat days, because it's one on, one off!

Not going to lie, those first couple of fasts were hard. Very hard! But, I promise that they get easier. I am so greedy I can't tell you, yet five weeks in I'm managing the fast days with little difficulty, and finally I'm finding I'm not eating as much on the eat days (still too much to change to 5:2, but I am seeing a difference, and my plan is to get to 5:2 soon).

I find that it helps to plan my fast day meals, otherwise it's too difficult on the day to start figuring it out. Drink lots and lots, keep busy, and know that when you wake up in the morning you can have a massive breakfast if you want it (you'll find you probably won't, but it's nice to get through the day thinking you can).

I've only been doing this for five weeks, so I'm no expert yet, I just thought I'd chime in because the amount of weight I have to lose is similar to yours. (I'm down 8lbs so far and I have NOT given up my wine, chocolate, and goodies).

IndianaMoans · 20/03/2013 13:56

Second fast day for me, finding it so much easier. Ive planned exactly what I'm eating today and have managed to drop down to 1 sugar in my tea/coffee saving a few calories to put towards dinner. Things taste much better when you are actually hungry! I've incorporated more low calorie protein today so I think that's why I feel better. Total calories today will be 499.

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 20/03/2013 14:42

0 cals so far, since 9.30pm last night. Which has been especially good going considering I made lunch for small - which included pizza and chocolate - and I have had a friend over for tea and a gossip (usually ends up being a food fest!)

Enchiladas are going to taste AMAZING!

BlackMaryJanes · 20/03/2013 15:30

More crap about 5:2 from The States. Apparently on this WOE you fast 2 days and the other 5 days require (and I quote) "no willpower" Hmm

artemis17 · 20/03/2013 16:44

Again thanks saf i shall go on a baked bean hunt lol.
droopy pleased you got a shift after feeling nothing was happening... i had a similar "whoop whoop" moment yesterday! :)

Sidebar · 20/03/2013 17:04

Thanks Nurse and akarucker, really helpful, encouraging posts. I'm going to to try next Monday. Or MOANday, as it will probably become.

Last week I finally ended my WW online membership, which I've had for about a year but only used on probably no more than 20 days. It felt a big relief to finally stop kidding myself and admit that I was never going to follow it, as monitoring all the time just doesn't work for me.

I would obviously prefer 5:2 to give faster weightloss than 1lb per week, but agian I have to stop kidding myself and know that it's not like I'd lose more or another plan because, unlike this one, I don't think I'd stick to it.

vieenrose · 20/03/2013 17:58

Hello everyone
I have been lurking for a while now and just wanted to report my results. I started this WOL on Jan 11 and have now lost 14 pounds. I also started exercising about three times a week. I don't weigh myself because I'm afraid of becoming discouraged by the inevitable variations. I get weighed at the gym every six weeks or so.
I really like this diet because I can see myself doing it for a very long period of time, maybe even for ever. I reckon I still have a stone and a half to lose. I've been on diets in the past but ended up falling off the wagon and putting everything back on (and some). Some fasts are tougher than others of course but I like being able to eat whatever I like most days, and have a drink or three.

BetsyVanBell · 20/03/2013 18:54

Fast day today - just feasted on Laska's aubergine curry with some salmon roasted in spices & lime, ooohhh yum yum yum. And some strawberries for afters [Happyface]

Felt really energised after my exercise session this morning too. A great day despite the freezing drizzle.

I love this WOL :)

monster54 · 20/03/2013 19:24

FAST DAY done!!

Woooop! Finished the day with lemon chicken risotto...

Feel a little bloated from TOM...going to get snuggled in bed nice and early tonight!

monster54 · 20/03/2013 19:26

Well done vieenrose that's an awesome loss!
