5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

artemis - they are HP beans - spent ages on my knees in the shop comparing beans one day and they came out best. looked at low cal ones the other day and they are about the same or just a few cals less and more expensive. i'm also dubious about 'low fat' or low cal food - usually means extra sugar or had all the goodness taken out imo.

frenchfancy · 20/03/2013 06:27

Hotpanda the important thing with yiur TDEE is your average. So it is ok to have a day at 1400 if like me you tend to eat much more than your TDEE.

swallowedAfly · 20/03/2013 06:43

decent fast yesterday and i'm 11.2.4 - bit disappointed. my lowest last week was 11.1.4 and today is my get to eat decently day. hmpf.

Itsaboatjack · 20/03/2013 07:27

Morning all. So two good fasts done, including 27hrs no food yesterday. Rewarded today with 11.7.2 on the scales, that's 4.8lbs lost last week. I know a lot of that is water but I'm really happy with that. Will have to try and make sure now I don't do anything in the week to ruin it.

Eating day today and I'm going to a cook off for our new menu. Lots of nice healthy summer dishes on it so I'm looking forward to that.

Don't despair saf you'll get down into the 10s soon enough, your doing all the right things.

catsrus · 20/03/2013 07:41

Just shrug it off SaF - a blip! I had a good day on monday, well within my TDEE, a good fast yesterday and was 3lb heavier this morning Hmm. I weigh every morning so I know it's just a random fluctuation - I'm guessing water retention due to more salt than usual in my diet on Monday (lots of Soy sauce and edamame with salt)

We know this WOE works - as evidenced by the clean pair of size 12 jeans I put on this morning - now clearly too large and requiring a belt to stay up Grin.

I will have an eating day today (at a conference for a few days ) so it's going to be not very healthy food - ive had a 5am start and am holding off eating until the sandwich lunch - might as well try to get some hEalth benefits from the day. Ironically the conference is right by some very good, healthy, eating places - but we'll be expected to network and eat lunch as provided Sad. You never know the sandwiches might be delicious Shock

swallowedAfly · 20/03/2013 07:56

hope you find a kindred spirit catsrus -makes all the difference on conferences.

as does a mission to nick lots of posh biscuits for ds throughout the day Blush

i'm trying to not let the sticky scales bother me but it is really putting me off the lunch i'm meant to be going for with a friend today. thing is though i had low cal day monday after a long fast, full fast day yesterday and there does need to be some 'eat' days in there in theory but i'm a bit scared of having one.

really, really want to keep losing weight. i can see what a difference the 12lbs or so i've lost has made but i can also still see what a difference the next stone will make. must.not.be.petulant. think a bit peed off also because i did loads of extra walking yesterday so hoped it would be a good one.

BetsyVanBell · 20/03/2013 08:05

saf ... Yet you know that a proper eating day might be just what your body needs to let go of those couple of lbs don't you? Have the lunch, enjoy it - a nice meal with a friend is good for the soul and as you don't normally eat in the day could be the shake up your body needs to get back to burning off the fat. Fast tomorrow. x

Dotty342kids · 20/03/2013 08:10

Aw swallowedafly don't be disheartened. I know, that you know, how much good this is doing for you and as you said to me only the other day, the scales will go up and down and you mustn't panic at sign of an "up". Keep focussed and all your hard work from earlier this week will pay off soon!
itsaboatjack that's fantastic! Ooh you'll be down to the 10's before you know it.
Weighed in today after fast day yesterday and seem to be back to 11st 1. Would have liked to briefly glimpse 11st itself as that's the same as last week but it's still good.
All trousers that were uncomfortably tight at the start of Feb are now comfy, even jeans straight out of the wash! So, I'm really pleased about that and looking forward to when they all get a bit loose........ though then I'll have to go shopping and I have no money but I'll worry about that nearer the time Grin

Fanjounchained · 20/03/2013 08:11

Well I joined thread no 3 or 4 I think way back....faffed about for a bit and then just went completely mad with my eating. Summer is a matter of weeks away ( I hope !) so time to get my finger oot ma bum and pick myself up.

Starting afresh today. Current weight 10st 8.2lbs. I WILL get to 9st 7lbs (this may involve removing some teeth is that cheating Grin) only kidding. I need to log on here regularly though. Just had hot water and lemon this morning. Need to plan my 500cals though.

BetsyVanBell · 20/03/2013 08:13

Ok, I've remembered to put on my exercise gear so it'll be a workout straight after walking the kids to school. Jillian and her Killer Buns are waiting. I've had a couple of weeks off doing structured exercise (just been cycling and walking) and the muscle tone just disappears so damn quickly. I should be grateful there's a bit less to jiggle these days I suppose Hmm

I might fast today too, quite enjoyed doing 2 and a bit fast days last week. I'll see how I get on - I normally do Thursday. My DH joins me for a Monday fast and has gone down to 6:1 (he's at his ideal weight already sigh) so now I'm freed up to choose how I do the rest of my week, which I prefer actually.

Minimammoth · 20/03/2013 08:52

My weigh in this morning says 10st 8.5oz. Yay. A bit to go before I am normal weight. There are ups and downs but the trend is downwards. I managed fast yesterday, am planning to do one Friday then away to weekend birthday celebration mostly eating junk
C'mon swallowedafly you have done so well, it won't be long before its sliding downwards again.

Sugarice · 20/03/2013 08:56

Another samphire lover here, I love it with cottage cheese on a fast day.

I've been doing this woe nearly a week now and I've not only dropped a pound but Ifeel better, I'm not reaching into the tin for two hobnobs or touching crisps.

I hope I can keep this up.

greenfig · 20/03/2013 09:47

I have not felt well this week, could that explain sudden weight gain? I have a sore throat & tight chest but it's my tummy that's bothering me most. I feel bloated, uncomfortable & sore. Perhaps it's from reintroducing carbs although it is only this week that the problem has started & I've been back on carbs since I started 5:2. Feeling a bit fed up about weight gain which is silly really as I feel quite good in my clothes. (even though I can't detect any loss on tape measure but not sure I was v accurate!)
Perhaps my fast tomorrow will sort things out a bit.
Another samphire from tezzas buyer here!
Waiting to hear what you think of killer buns BVBSmile

Ninunina · 20/03/2013 09:52

I'm doing a Wednesday & Friday fast day this week since we had a long weekend with lots of treats. I've gotten rid of all the rubbish in the house and am heading off to the health food shop to buy one bar of dark chocolate and some nuts. I'm determined to kick my sugar addiction, so will only allow myself 2 blocks per day on non fast days. If I'm desperate I'll allow myself some cocoa sweetened with xylitol. This had worked in the past so will hopefully work again. I'm also going to start tracking my non fast days since I haven't lost any weight for 2 weeks (totally my fault for over eating).
Spring has started here, so bikini weather is just round the corner. Not to mention that I'm a bridesmaid in July and the other girls are all size 8, so I don't want to look like a whale. If all this doesn't get me motivated, then nothing will.
Size 10 dress. ...I will fit into you (comfortably)....I promise!

BetsyVanBell · 20/03/2013 10:00

greenfig Well I'm sitting here in a pool of sweat having just done the Jillian, feels like a work out alright! I couldn't even quite manage all the exercises so I've got some work to do yet... The first level is pretty tricky but I found that with shred but improved really quickly. I'm really out of practice after all of 3 weeks break Shock. Ideally I'd combine it with shred to get more abs and upper body work too (NOT on the same session though!!) and throw in a session of yoga here and there too. I say ideally - it's not likely to actually happen Wink

There's loads of stomach bugs out there, it sounds like you're fighting something off :( which might be why you're feeling fed up too.

I'm really going to have to track down some samphire now, I'd forgotten all about the lovely stuff!

monster54 · 20/03/2013 10:16

ninunina.....I'm with you on the bridesmaid front I've got to stand next to size 6's uuuurrrgggghhhhh!!!! My dress is a 16 booooo although I was assured at the shop they do come up small. Not sure if she was telling me this to make me feel better!!

FAST DAY TODAY!!!! Wooooooo!

I do feel excited about these days coming up and challenging myself to see how far I can go although it's freezing today.

Has anyone found this WOE has helped regulate their TOM? My cycles were silly long since having my little one and now bang on 30 days.....

monster54 · 20/03/2013 10:30

Wouldn't it be nice if my dress has to be taken in loads....I think the bride might lynch me.....but hey ho!!!!

swallowedAfly · 20/03/2013 10:35

that's a happy side effect monster.

have decided i am going out for the lunch with friend and will have the fry up we planned. will also allow myself a drink tonight if i fancy it. not sure if tomorrow will manage to be a fast day as i have to attend an evening event and am staying late at work and going straight onto it. hopefully will be a low cal day at least and i can fast again friday.

talk of bridesmaid days are giving me horrible flashbacks to my sister's wedding where i swear she deliberately made me look a complete idiot - pink shot satin, big puffy sleeves and the most unflattering cut and length ever. i was a very cool 21yo and was mortified.

monster54 · 20/03/2013 10:44

Oh no swallowed thats not nice! I can't grumble it is a beautiful dress....it's just all the skinny minnies I have to stand next to that are freaking me out.

Sounds like a plan re: the lunch with friend. Sounds lovely. I would try and take a soup with you tomorrow on fast day and have that before the event and hopefully you can stick to your fast day!!

Good luck and enjoy your time with your friend!

Hi all,

I'm seriously considering doing this diet and joining you but I have a couple of questions first, if you don't mind answering!

I have over 4st to lose. Are there some of you who have similar and have had a good result on this diet? I see that both Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer have lost 20lbs, and I see people on here having lost a stone or two, but I have so much more to lose and I'm wondering if it will be effective.

Also, when do you do your weigh-in days, the day of a first, or the day of your second fast of the week (so have benefit from the first Wink) or one of your feast days?

Cheers.

ELR · 20/03/2013 11:15

Hi all not posted for a few days but did my usual fast on Monday and weighed in this morning and pleased to say am down to 10st7.75lb so overall in 30 days I've lost 6lbs so very pleased DH has lost 11lbs which is a bit annoying!! I am pleased for him though think he will need to go not maintenance soon as he only wants to loose another few pounds.

Swallowed.... Shame about the disappointing weigh in but think others are right maybe you need to go and enjoy your lunch which may give your body a little kickstart to getting the scales moving down again.

Greenfig..... Hope you are feeling better soon , I'm sure the weight gain will just be a blip now possible way you can just gain 4lbs out of nowhere!

Hope it's not too cold tomorrow it's a fast day and my gas is being turned off all day tomorrow so I will be freezing think I better go out!

Daisy1407 · 20/03/2013 11:16

Morning all
Im at work clock watching as i currently have half day today - Im cooking for my parents tongiht - been in my house nearly 2 years and havent had them over for tea yet - they always cook for me Wink

Dotty342kids · 20/03/2013 11:18

Hi sidebar and welcome to the thread! I'd say this should work well for you. I know there are people on here who have lost quite considerable amounts of weight and one of the joys of this woe is that it's quite sustainable over a long period of time / forever! There's no "I will diet and lose this weight by such and such a date" mentality as it's more about a long term change of eating habits. Many people, once they're down to their target weight, then go on to a maintenance woe which seems to consist of just one day fasting per week which keeps the health benefits of this without continuing to lose weight.
As for when to weigh in, that's a really personal choice. I choose to weigh most days as I'm quite happy to see the daily fluctuations, but that freaks other people out so they only weigh once per week.
As long as it's the same each week eg. after first fast day / second fast day / on a Sunday morning it doesn't really matter when it is.

Sidebar · 20/03/2013 11:25

Thanks Dotty and Daisy (sounds like a children's clothing boutique Wink)

I might start next Monday. I have to do something. I am officially obese and my weight is getting me down both physically and emotionally. Apart from The Weight I'm in a v good place in my life, and I'd like to just kick that issue into touch once and for all. I have tried WW and can't stick to it. I am worried I won't be able to stick to this but I naturally find it pretty easy to get to lunchtime without eating much, so I'm going to igve it a go. And at least it's only 2 days. I need to have some days when I'm not thinking about my calorie intake, which is why WW didn't work for me.

Daisy1407 · 20/03/2013 11:35

Sidebar - thanks the great thing with this diet as its only 2 days a week - you have a bad day you try again 2mo - YOU CAN DO THIS

Get focused ready to begin Monday - Get organised so you know what you plan to eat on Monday (i find this helps me)
