5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I bought some samphire (green skinny coastline veg) from tesco today. It is perfect fast day food and makes a change from other greens! I had it with scrambled eggs at lunch and some ready meal chicken curry Blush at dinner time. yum and very low calorie!samphire

BetsyVanBell · 19/03/2013 19:20

Giraffes What a find! I love samphire - only had it once collected wild by knowledgable friends on a coastal hol but I remember it's deliciousness with fondness. sigh

BlackMaryJanes · 19/03/2013 19:28

Itsaboatjack Darn :(

I recall mentioning a few times on this thread that when I fast I have stinky breath, and people have responded saying that it's the ketones Confused Yet no ketones being picked up on these sticks.

swallowedAfly · 19/03/2013 19:52

you may laugh at my baked beans but i've just had them with the usual addings and some chilli and cumin - yum and filling AND a bit of googling has shown me actually very good for you.

i seriously can't think of anything that would be so filling for 280 cals as a can of beans.

no doubt i'll be onto something new next month Grin

monster54 · 19/03/2013 19:53

itsaboatjack I have been tempted by this tactic to keep me going!!! Although shamefully I have a whole wardrobe full of stuff waiting for my butt to shrink small enough to get in it ;o)

GiraffesEatPineapples · 19/03/2013 19:55

BMJ are you low carbing. I think you have to be eating less than 20 g of carbs a day for that to happen and app it takes more than one day. I have briffa on loan from library so I can check for sure. It can vary from person to person aswell. I have started exploring lowering carbs a bit but I am not aiming to go so low that I experience ketosis. I think fasting can cause bad breath my dp made a comment once but I don't know for sure its to do with ketones - also I think if its ketones your wee might smell funny Confused

Betsy how lucky to have had it from the wild! [panic emoticon] what if Tesco never have it again - maybe I should bulk buy and feeze some! I got it in the reduced section which is my version of foraging.

Baked beans are ACE : when DH is really tired, a whole tin of baked beans on a slice of toast with strong salami and a dash of grated cheese = his supper

storminabuttercup · 19/03/2013 19:58

Giraffes, do you have one of those new fangled morrisons near by, mine has it in those ice things. I wanted to try it but its priced by weight and I'd be terrified it would cost a fortune. Shock

GiraffesEatPineapples · 19/03/2013 19:59

swallowed baked beans rule!

I have 3 pairs of (vanity sizing) size 12 skinny jeans from new look when they were on offer waiting for a bit more weight loss (ideally this saturday... no pressure)

BetsyVanBell · 19/03/2013 20:01

Saf Who's laughing? Baked beans are wonder food :)

GiraffesEatPineapples · 19/03/2013 20:02

Oh no I dont have a morrisons nearby but app an express one is opening [hopeful]. I dont understand, what is this ice thing you speak of? Give it a try it doesn't weigh hardly anything mine was reduced from £2 for a decent serving to give you an idea of cost.

Dotty342kids · 19/03/2013 20:05

ooh, quite like the baked beans idea. My DH makes "Indian beans on toast" which is basically some fried onion, chopped up chilli and garam masala, then add the beans and heat as usual. It's really tasty and I imagine if you just have the one piece of toast it's a good filling dinner.
Mmm, am making Moroccan chickpea soup for next fast day dinner but the beans option will definitely make an appearance next week!
Tonight we had a sort of lentil dahl which had chunky carrots, squash and potatoes in it, was lovely. I had it with one chapatti but tbh didn't really need it. Have frozen a portion (about 375 cals) and next time will just have it as it is, then I can use the other cals on a much needed mid afternoon banana!

tracedw · 19/03/2013 20:07

TIP exactly........
giraffes one of my favs, samphire..... we moved last summer from the Suffolk coast (lots of it there) to Ireland and i have yet to see it , must give the local Tesco's a visit now!

storminabuttercup · 19/03/2013 20:40

Giraffes, they are like big boxes with ice in and they put some veg etc in there then water vapour (that's not the right word) comes off and it looks all futuristic. I luffs my new morrisons

*disclaimer it's not just mine, I share it with quite a few people

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 19/03/2013 20:52

Gah! Just saw my ex today and looked an absolute mess. Wanted to see him when I had a swagger on and had dropped a stone lol. Typical!

Still, already done one fast - tomorrow am meant to be having enchiladas with the whole family but it is a fast day. So, going to see if I can get to 6pm on water alone so I have enough cals for 1!

I don't want to waste the fast day.

Feeling pretty good, get a sense of euphoria towards the end of a fast day and combined with the endorphins from working out I am on cloud 9 most of the time! Who needs booze? Lmao

Inlovewithchocolate · 19/03/2013 20:56

Well what can I say.. I'm struggling.. Going to fast again tomorrow. Losing the will to live here but determined to continue. Seem to have lost momentum.. Everyone on here seems to be so committed, where am I going wrong.

peplum41 · 19/03/2013 21:20

inlovewith chocolate please do elaborate, have you been struggling to fast today or to stick to your tdee?
Personally I feel able to commit because of the usual mantras: I can eat more tomorrow, can eat what i like tomorrow, etc.

Inlovewithchocolate · 19/03/2013 21:27

peplum I started out so well a couple of weeks ago. Really focused and committed. I fasted yesterday and did so well then I came home from work and ate lots of choc. Well over my 500 calories. Today I have gone over my intake which is about 1600. I've given myself a talk and am starting over tomorrow.

Dawndonna · 19/03/2013 21:29

I feel a pig! It's a normal day today, first fast yesterday. I don't think I've gone mad, hot cross bun for breakfast, ham roll for lunch and fish pie for tea. Fruit inbetween. It's below 1200 calories. Hope this is okay, I want to eat reasonably on non fast days, but don't want to go nuts.

artemis17 · 19/03/2013 21:33

SaF thanks, it felt good to have that tiny victory after all these weeks. As for beans, are they low salt/calorie ones as the own brand ones i have from a well known supermarket are 370 for the whole tin, so adding anything takes it up to almost my 500 allowance?.

peplum41 · 19/03/2013 21:37

I had a really euphoric fast on friday, but yesterday was horrific. I wasnt bothered about the lack of food so much, but struggled to maintain my usual laid back demeanour whilst attempting to herd two dithering elderly ladies along a windswept country path (thanks DH), and really lost it Im sorry to say. Then felt the rest of the day feeling remorse and shame, the two ladies were so nice about it aswell. I put it down to pmt, which was partly to blame.

In future will plan fast days when not under too much stress and due on.

peplum41 · 19/03/2013 21:45

inlovewithchocolateoh call it a mini-fast and chalk it down for experience! Was work crap or was the choc just too darn tempting? Are you remembering to factor in a treat on your TDEE days? Plus, its always good to have a drink of water, tea whatever then think give it 20 minutes and see how I feel.

Inlovewithchocolate · 19/03/2013 21:49

peplum choc was in fridge it just called me.. Thanks for your advise I'm ready for my fast tomorrow. On the plus side I have a date after being single for 3 years... Got to get into shape now

HotPanda · 19/03/2013 22:05

2nd fasting day today. It went ok, but due to being on a corporate training day I didn't fast as long as I would have liked. I managed 18 and a half hours, and then ate a sandwich for 300 calories.
Been playing sport straight from work, then come home and had the very (un)nutritious dinner of low fat supernoodles. Finishing on 630 calories which is slightly over but i'm not distraught about it.

Yesterday was a TDEE day. My TDEE is just over 2000, but I only ate 1407 according to MFP. Is that not enough? Should I try to eat more tomorrow?

s03bf122 · 19/03/2013 22:56

Hi Guys,

I have just found your thread and find all your stories really encouraging, like many I have struggled with my weight since school and am keen to shift that stubborn last 1.5 stones. I am getting married in 10 weeks and this seems like a really "doable" way of losing a bit of extra weight. I would love to hear more weight loss success stories to spur me on
