5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Welcome to the threads Sammy. I can only echo what basil has said. I'd suggest trying to push off breakfast as long as you can. If you really really must do breakfast, I'd suggest a boiled egg or something similar. Protein rather than carbs. (and I normally enjoy carbs, I just try to keep them to a minimum on fast days.)

indiana - you'll probably find it easier to go longer as time goes by. if you need to eat something for lunch how about a boiled egg and a handful of fresh prawns - about 120cals and protein fills and sustains. at night if you need to be full i've discovered HP baked beans are lower cal than you might think. recently i've been having a can of beans with shredded turkey ham and a dollop of low fat philly stirred in as late as i can wait.

the beans have the added benefit of avoiding constipation which some find they get after a fast.

InNeedOfAName · 19/03/2013 05:36

BillCompton - hi, another low carber here. Actually I'm following Briffa's eating plan so I'm eating nuts, berries and yoghurt and avoiding cheese and cream. Have lost 12kg and re-entered the healthy BMI zone :) but want to lose another 6 kg to get down to a mid range point. Hoping that fasting will generally be good for me and move the sluggish scales again!

HotPanda · 19/03/2013 06:43

I'm going for fast no2 today.
I had dinner at 7pm, then A mini egg about 9pm.
Should I start counting from 9pm?

HotPanda · 19/03/2013 06:44

That is A mini egg, as in just one. Not a bag.

InNeedOfAName · 19/03/2013 07:00

HotPanda :) Didn't know that was possible!

swallowedAfly · 19/03/2013 07:20

it's up to you hotpanda Grin there are no fast police spying on you. kudos on having just 'one' mini egg.

fast day here too.

must stick to the 500 today. need to see that 10something on the scales.

HotPanda · 19/03/2013 07:26

Ha, they weren't mine! It's easy to have one when you are being polite. If they were mine that would be a different story!

Dawndonna · 19/03/2013 07:30

Did my first day yesterday. Overdid the 500 because I 'budgeted' wrongly, but have lost 2lbs according to the scales this morning. However, I went to bed early because I felt really, really sick. Is this common for the first time?

ThinnerByDinner · 19/03/2013 07:43

Hi All,

On week six here.. weigh in every monday.. had a bad week the week before last and weighed in last Monday (11.3.13) +2lbs! Not happy, so did a 4:3 last week and weighed in yesterday -5lbs.. thats a total loss of 11lbs so far.

I find im really good in the week and on non fast days dont feel the need to stuff myself because I can, really suprising! However come Saturday evening/Sunday I dont stop myself having anything and really do indulge! But I suppose thats the best thing about this woe.. we can do this!

Good luck all fasters today..!!

swallowedAfly · 19/03/2013 07:57

wearing a top i haven't worn in ages. i still have a podge line that ruins things a bit but it is so much better. it also makes me determined that that podge line can go too. this summer i will be wearing to the hip fitted tops and skirts and trousers without feeling the need to drape cardigans, scarves etc over the top to hide behind.

this is working. please don't be discouraged by a bad week or a slow start. slowly or quickly, in fits and spurts, whatever - if it is going in the right direction overall then it is working.

BetsyVanBell · 19/03/2013 08:18

Post-fast day weigh in (after a good week of exercise and a sensible weekend of eating) - Yay bounced down again - a new low to aim for :)

10st5.6

whispers I'm starting to think maybe 9st something will be a possibility... eventually

As long is it goes from my legs though please, waist is small enough now thank you body! I'm starting to wish my trousers had that adjustable elastic with buttons like you get on kids' clothes.

Must get started on my Jillian killer buns & thighs regime.

Dotty342kids · 19/03/2013 08:19

Things not going so well with me at the moment. I fleetingly saw 11st 1 last week but that was a one off as have consistently showed as 11st 3 again since then. It's driving me slightly mad!
Yesterday would nomally have been a fast day but I was out last night so treated it as a mini fast eg. nothing all day but obviously ate over my 500 cals once I was out!
Today is my proper fast day, and so will Friday be as well. I've not been using MFP for the last couple of weeks and wonder if I've unknowingly been going over my TDEE on my eating days. Back to it after today!
But I do still feel like I'm slimming down, went down a belt notch yesterday. Might measure myself today for a bit of motivation (hopefully!).

Dotty342kids · 19/03/2013 08:20

That's great news BetsyvanBell, well done!!

BetsyVanBell · 19/03/2013 08:22

Dotty It's taken me 3 weeks of bouncing around to drop another pound, don't despair, it will shift. I definitely don't lose weight unless I'm exercising too though.

BetsyVanBell · 19/03/2013 08:22

Dotty cross-post! Thank you Grin

Minimammoth · 19/03/2013 08:30

Have had a bit of an overindulgent weekend, no cal counting and meal out with pudding. So it will be an intrepid weigh in today.
Tips on how to get through Easter needed. Am already succumbing to chocci treats. Can I just eat Easter egg on a fast day? Innocent emoticon.

swallowedAfly · 19/03/2013 08:30

great news bvb Smile

dotty - not disimilar at the minute. i saw 11.1.4 last week this week i'm seeing 11.3. like you i had a mini fast yesterday and intend to do a fast today. we can do it! do also bear in mind the obvious stuff - where in your cycle you are, how your bowels are feeling (tmi queen here so will share that i feel quite bunged up the last couple of days and that could well account for the scales).

BetsyVanBell · 19/03/2013 08:40

I am not going to buy myself loads of nice chocolate refusing all chocolate at Easter this year - don't know how I'll get on with that but I've just checked my food diary from last year and I made an usually despairing entry that day:

Clearly not going to be able to rest until all the chocolate is gone :( I have no willpower and hate myself for it - so stupid, I'm not even getting much joy out of it. Stupid addiction. And worse, I bought most of it! Hardly received any at all. Must do better next year.

Think I was trying to tell myself something Wink!

Minimammoth · 19/03/2013 08:41

Morning swallowed yep. As expected, on the seesaw, up 2lbs, it was inevitable, I shall attempt fast today ( although have already had light breakfast). Bvb, I would love to think in terms of 9st. But I am trying not to be disappointed. Go for it though.

monster54 · 19/03/2013 09:15

Ok I'm on this morning to confess and post a much more positive update. And a bit of a thank you to the ladies who took the time to guide me and encourage me last week. I indulged at the weekend and 'relaxed' I fasted successfully yesterday and thought I would hop on the scales this morning to see the residual damage....

Well I was pleasantly surpised....I'm in my fourth week and 4.5lbs down!! Last Thursday I was exactly at my starting point.....I don't know if it will stay down at this but at least there is some movement.

I now feel motivated to keep on going. I'm at my lowest since having my baby a year ago. Didn't think that was possible!

And I can't believe I stuffed my face all day Saturday!!!!

BetsyVanBell · 19/03/2013 09:15

minimammoth It wasn't very long ago that I was thinking 'could I make it to 10 stone something?' My main goal initially was to get to into the normal BMI range - I've now lost over 3 stone (45lbs! Not just on IF, only started that 9 weeks ago) in total, without feeling particularly deprived, so frankly I feel like anything's possible Grin.

As for short term increases and losses (ie bouncing) here's what happened to me lately

28th Feb 10st8.2
1st March 10st6.4
4th March 10st8
5th March 10st7
9th March 10st9
11th March 10st7.8
13th March 10st7.2
15th March 10st7
18th March 10st6.6
19th March 10st5.6

So 3 weeks, nearly 3lbs overall - you can see why it's so important to look at the overall downward trend rather than panicking over the increases. Today's weight won't be my actual weight for another week or so no doubt! And then I'm going on holiday so will no doubt go up a few pounds again. BUT I know I'll shift it again :)

Dotty342kids · 19/03/2013 09:44

Thanks for support everyone! swallowedafly no "sluggish" bowels or TOTM here so can't blame those but thanks for trying Grin
Off for game of tennis now!

ComeTalkToMe · 19/03/2013 10:50

swallowedAfly and BetsyVanBell thanks for sharing your cheering thoughts about looking at an overall downward trend. I struggled a bit with my fast yesterday and so was very disappointed when the scales showed 1lb up this morning Sad This is my third week of fasting, started off at 13stone Blush so thought it would come off quickly but I'm at 12st10lb now and that's after a fast day. Just need to remind myself I'm in the WOE for the long term.

monster54 I'm glad you managed to get a result from relaxing a bit - that's fab news!

On a more positive note for me, I managed a 4k run this morning in my training for my 10k, and that was after a fast so hopefully fat getting burned!

BlackMaryJanes · 19/03/2013 10:52

Betsy Is there a reason for the regular weighing?
