5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi!
I'm newish to this. I bought the book for my Kindle and am now on my 4th Fast day. So far I've lost about 6lb, which is particularly impressive as I caught my DDs nasty flu like virus pretty soon after starting. I do ignore cough medicine and cough sweets (I only buy the ones I don't like the taste of, so only use them to stop coughing before I throw up).

Today has been harder, I was going to go for a walk after school drop off but then it started to pour down. I have also been hungrier than my other fast days. However carrots have helped, along with herbal tea.

jenniejenjen · 18/03/2013 17:06

Hi Erik,

It was actually an eating day for me yesterday - I'd fasted on the Saturday - sorry I didn't make that clear!

Had a few ryvita with a cuppa soup up until 8pm yesterday, but I was drinking with a roast dinner, and it was two small glasses of red and a martini over the space of a few hours - I wasn't going mad!

Ah well...let it be a lesson...

GreenEggsAndNichts · 18/03/2013 17:27

Daisy just try to be aware of when you're weighing yourself. The last time you weighed in, was it just after a weekend of heavy eating? Because that's really the only way you can compare the weigh-ins. If the last one was after a fast day, for example, then this weigh-in will certainly be heavier.

So (if you aren't already doing this) try to be consistent about when you weigh in. If it's once a week, always do it after a fast day, or after an eating day. Or just weigh in regularly and take the average. But there will be great fluctuations between weights after fast and non-fast days

I got the book at the weekend. I'm a bit grumpy today, I think I went about it the wrong way. I had muesli for breakfast, 272 calories, so that was half of my calories gone. I did a homemade soup for lunch, and had an apple. Now I'm miserable because that's the lot. I shall only have muesli on an eating day now.

ElizaCBennett · 18/03/2013 19:04

Fast day for me today. When I got up I was very hungry which is unusual for me. Anyway it appears I have a bug! Felt rough all morning before I had to come home and back to bed. Still thinking about my stomach (!) I got up to make something but felt sick and lightheaded and now back in bed. So nothing for me today so will see how I get on this week.

Talkinpeace · 18/03/2013 19:09

Well I successfully fasted for 24 hours, but kinda blew the 500 calorie bit because I have a fridge full of leftover Chinese takeaway that needed triaging : but I was good and only had the bamboo, beansprouts, water chestnuts and steamed meats and no pork in jam and only a teeny bit of refried rice.
NOM NOM!

dines · 18/03/2013 19:28

Hello had a fast day today I can never manage to stick to 500 cals.. I think iv had around 500-600.. feel really down about that iv been doin this for about 3-4 weeks and not been able to stick to the 500. Scales have gone bk up, I weighed in on saturday and had lost 6lb altoegther and that was after my two feed days now its gone bk up and have only lose 3lb altogether. Gosh this is tough lol hate seeing it rising again.

swallowedAfly · 18/03/2013 19:30

today has turned out to be long fast plus low cal but not 500. more like 1000. oh well still had a good fast and still half of my tdee.

i will try again for 500 tomorrow.

leftover chinese is hard to resist TIP.

dines · 18/03/2013 19:49

Swallowedafly I love Chinese its my fave had it on saturday night

storminabuttercup · 18/03/2013 19:56

Swallowed I've done the same, I fasted for 21.5 hours then I've probably had 1000 calories, I've been freezing all day and needed something more. Tomorrow is my official fast day, determined to do better, think I messed up today as I knew it was only a 'mini fast' I'd planned on doing about 600 cals.

Half our TDDE is good though. That plus 2 fasts is 4000 cal less this week!!

IndianaMoans · 18/03/2013 20:00

Coming to the end of my first fast day and will have consumed 496 calories. I am so hungry and looking forward to my cup of tea that I have been putting off since 4pm! I am going to rethink my plan for next fast day as I found that fruit plus veg soup really didn't fill me up at all! Anyone care to share what they generally eat on a fasting day?

Daisy1407 · 18/03/2013 20:12

I do weigh on a Monday officially so unfortunately I have deffo put on 2lb - just had my fast day tea - waitrose chicken chorizo soup a hot choc and a ice lolly lol!!!!
Bed time soon and I'm hoping that Tomo that 2lb will be vanished!

I love Chinese too I'm craving it now! X

storminabuttercup · 18/03/2013 20:19

Indiana, I've been having something like fish or chicken with salad or veg. Fruit makes me hungry but the protein fills me up I think. I also try and eat late as possible so I can then have a cup of tea and go to bed.

IndianaMoans · 18/03/2013 20:30

I would never manage just one meal, so need to spread the 500 calories over the day. Could probably manage to just drink in the morning then split the calories between lunch and dinner. I might try porridge made with water at lunch on my next day. I'm chasing around after a toddler all day and don't drive so walk everywhere and I just get so hungry! Just need some ideas how to vary things a bit I guess.

Wishihadabs · 18/03/2013 20:30

I started off trying to have 3 small meals, just doesn't work for me. I now have coffee all morning (I take it black anyway) then a single 200-300 kcal meal around 2-3pm before school run time. Then tea through the evening. Works for me. For my meal I have a chunky veg soup or a NUME pot from worries of innocent veg pot.

Itsaboatjack · 18/03/2013 20:45

Indiana I don't tend to mix it up much on fast days - I used to have a homemade soup about 2/3pm. I've now worked up to 24hr fasts so I don't bother with that now. Dinner is usually salad, omelette and lean meat or prawns, then a coffee with milk (I drink it black during the day). If I'm not too busy at the weekend then I might make something from the recipe thread and freeze it in portions for fast days. I don't like to think about food too much on fast days, and dh is a good cook so always cooks for him and dc on those days.

greenfig · 18/03/2013 21:00

daisy I'll take your 2lbs I'm up 5lbs & no idea whySad

giraffemum · 18/03/2013 21:30

Indiana I have porridge made with water for breakfast and tea with skimmed milk. Black coffee, water, herbal teas etc sees me through til supper which might be grilled chicken, couscous and salad or veg soup with lentils/pearl barley. If I've got enough calories left I'll have some low fat Greek yoghurt and honey for pud. Also running around after toddler and doing walking school run but seem to be able to cope on this! Stick with it it will get easier

BillComptonstrousers · 18/03/2013 21:30

I have to split my meals as I wouldn't last all day, plus I need protein at lunch or I would not last till dinner!

So today I had;

B-green tea and Lemon
L-Thai shredded chicken salad (200)
D-herby chicken with leeks (275)
S-marmite drink (10)

BillComptonstrousers · 18/03/2013 21:31

I'm also low carbing alongside the 5:2

headintheclouds · 18/03/2013 21:46

indiana have been following WOE for 7 weeks.today is fasting day for me. I usually have black coffee/ herbal teas / water until about 4 pm ( about 20 hours since food for me) I always have either home made soup or half a pot of Glorious skinny soup which is 105 cals plus a small tangerine. I then have 350 cals for the evening.Tonight I had 200 cals of aubergine/ chick pea curry which Ive made in a large batch, absolutely gorgeous and left me stuffed .( recipe on recipe thread, thanks Laska) with a tiny bit of rice . I will have a coffee with milk which I will count as 50 cals. Thats me until tomorrow. Ive coped quite well over the last 7 weeks although I did think early on that this weight is slow to come off.Ive now lost 7 lbs and am very happy( my goal is another 20 lbs)
Ive never really felt massively hungry like some people experience. Havent managed 24 hrs without food so far , and have built up to 20 hours from 16. Im still enjoying cooking from the recipe thread french fancy has linked from beginning of each thread. Good luck

IndianaMoans · 18/03/2013 22:47

giraffemum I think I will aim for a similar fast day as you next. Sounds like we have similar activity levels. I could probably skip breakfast, as long as I have a cup of tea first thing and have porridge for lunch, with chicken and veg for evening meal. headintheclouds I will check out that recipe on the recipe thread, thanks.

Sammy3 · 18/03/2013 23:13

I've just started 5:2 & am on my first fast day. I saw the telly programme & wanted to try it but then forgot all about it until I saw a book in Waterstones last week. I need to lose about 2 1/2 stone. I've tried low calorie, low carb & the gym in the past but none worked really. I tend to lose a pound or 2 & then my body decides that's it & hangs on to the rest. The low carb diet was actually the best since I lost more on that but started fantasising about bread so had to stop. This WOE sounded like it would suit me though, as long as I can keep very busy on fast days to start with.

I had my usual Weetabix this morning & 3 Cupasoups since then. I was planning to do a 16 hour gap on fast days but thought I'd ease into it by spreading the calories out a bit on my first day. Though this current wave is passing, I'm feeling very hungry now so I think having my meal at lunch on fast days would be better. I think I'll miss my cereal though since I always eat breakfast (only cereal though, can't handle a fry up in the morning). I'll be fasting on Mondays & Wednesdays so I'm hoping I don't get tempted to go crazy on Tuesdays.

basildonbond · 18/03/2013 23:21

Hi Sammy

I have been surprised by how unhungry I've felt on the days following a fast day - no desire to eat crap at all!

I've found the easiest way to deal with a fast day is to skip breakfast and lunch and then eat a huge bowl of veg soup/stew in the evening. Once you start eating it seems to make you hungrier a little while later

If you're feeling a wave of hunger, have a cup of tea (pukka herbal are yummy) or glass of water and it will go away

I've been doing this for 7 weeks now so by no means a veteran but it is astonishingly easy to stick to. Whenever you feel tempted by something you can just think "I can have that tomorrow" which is amazingly cheering Grin

Prawntoast · 18/03/2013 23:32

I decided to stop eating lunch on my fast days and just have my calories in my evening meal. I have found it much easier than I was expecting. I felt more hungry after a lunch than I do when I just go straight through. Always fast on a work day so I'm busy.
