5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

i let the boy decide and he wants sausage, mash and veg so home cooking it is. he has saved me from a fatty, salty takeaway binge damn him

whatsforyou · 15/03/2013 18:18

On my third fast day this week as would like to oomph my weight loss a bit after being stuck on a plateau for so long.
I'm struggling a bit though, not with hunger but it's my tom and I'm really crampy and just want chocolate!
Resisting though, I just keep telling myself it won't make me feel better but a loss on the scales will.

swallowedAfly · 15/03/2013 18:29

well done whatsforyou.

very quiet on here tonight - does that mean everyone is off scoffing chocolate? Wink

had our sausages, mash and veg. going to have an apple next of all things. have a few of those chocolate digestives left for later if i feel the urge for a munch. i think realistically i must be way under tdee at this point again. as contrary as it sounds i'm going to try and make sure i eat my tdee tomorrow - don't think being too under too long can be helpful - my body won't be getting any real switches between eat and fast days.

Talkinpeace · 15/03/2013 18:44

am having a drink tonight - but strange work day tomorrow so have to be restrained.
ish :-)
whatsforyou
have you upped your exercise as well - working out while fasting is very effective ....

BetsyVanBell · 15/03/2013 18:46

I've had my mini fast day - 24 hours of very few calories then a lovely big indulgent din dins with plenty of carbs Grin.

I didn't snack after school [YAY] - I might pop in a mini fast every week if I can fit one in.

I haven't got any chocolate saf, though there is a packet of smarties in the cupboard if I get really desperate. I hope I don't cos they taste of almost nothing compared to the nice stuff Wink

wildwater · 15/03/2013 19:04

Hi everybody. Maybe I'm mad, but I have never actually counted the calories...either on feed or fast days! I keep it simple: eat a normal 'clean' diet 5 days, and one or two very small meals (based on recipes from the Telegraph site) the other two. Doing this - plus exercising - I have dropped from 12 stone 3 lbs to 9 stone 12 lbs since just before Christmas. Now wearing size 10 jeans ( it was a squeeze to get into size 16 when I began.) Good luck to you all...

Talkinpeace · 15/03/2013 19:15

Wildwater
I do not calorie count either - fast days I know roughly what I'm having.
Other days very roughly.
BUT
I use the "muffin top" test : if my jeans feel tight then I need to be more careful

whatsforyou · 15/03/2013 19:17

Have been doing a Pilates DVD in the mornings talkinpeace had planned to go some good long walks this week but have been feeling so rubbish and it has been so cold and miserable I only managed one!
Hoping to get out on my bike this weekend as dh is around as long as we don't get more snow, I'm not that keen Grin

swallowedAfly · 15/03/2013 19:44

not a calorie counter either - guesstimate on fast days. so tonight i had sausages mash and veg and i know that can't be much - thinking 6-700 at most and suddenly thought that's not enough actually.

have rectified that by making cookies with ds and we've had a couple each. surprisingly for me i feel full up. might squeeze another couple in before sleeping but....?

definitely getting a more normal appetite.

wildwater - hope i have same success at you. keeping it simple (if your simple is realistic) may actually help as i think sometimes knowing you 'can' have x calories and counting inclines people to eating every last one iyswim. when i've tried counting it made me obsessed and constantly thinking about food and what i could have.

BetsyVanBell · 15/03/2013 19:51

I only count calories very occasionally just to check that my guestimates are not wildly innaccurate.

When, out of curiosity and boredom, I did spend a few days properly calorie counting it just made me eat more, as I apparently had lots left to eat, rather than listening to my body (much like saf said). It's not like all calories are equal anyway...

BsshBossh · 15/03/2013 19:53

wildwater I no longer calorie count either, but that's only because I calorie counted for a year before starting 5:2 so have now learned well, still learning actually what normal, healthy portions are for my size. My next goal is to "eat clean" much more often.

Itsaboatjack · 15/03/2013 20:17

Someone please give me some strength. Fast day today, went well but now I am struggling. I so want to just go into the kitchen and eat something.

swallowedAfly · 15/03/2013 20:24

how about something to sip and heading to bed itsa?

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 15/03/2013 20:30

Great success, wildwater - inspirational :)

Itsaboatjack · 15/03/2013 20:49

Wish I could go to bed. Working until close (bar), trying to stay away from the peanuts! I'm trying to focus on what the scales may say tomorrow. The rate I'm drinking water, I'm too busy going for a wee every 5 mins to find time to eat anyway Grin

Thanks or the words of encouragement.

I'll keep thinking of wildwater's story too, that's very encouraging - well done.

Southeastdweller · 15/03/2013 21:11

Think of the summer fast approaching - t-shirts, bikinis, shorts!

storminabuttercup · 15/03/2013 21:30

Anyone around to kick me up the arse? I've had the worst day ever and I'm supposed to be fasting. I was so hungry I went over for my meal to 600 cals so I've stuffed up (I did fast for 24 hours though)

I'm now sitting here fed up and wanting to eat something. Anything!

BetsyVanBell · 15/03/2013 21:34

Storm 600 cals isn't stuffing up, it's fine. Don't worry about it. Have a hot drink or a hot bath!

storminabuttercup · 15/03/2013 21:35

Do you think betsy?

I'm going to go to bed, sooner I do the sooner it's breakfast time :-) x

Itsaboatjack · 15/03/2013 21:36

You and me both storm. We can do it though, we have before right, we know its not impossible.

I like southeasts suggestion. Must keep thinking of my summer hols and want to feel confident in bikini. :)

BsshBossh · 15/03/2013 21:38

600 cals is not a stuff up storm!

storminabuttercup · 15/03/2013 21:39

I think what did it today was getting on some of those propper scales at the gym that work out what you should weigh, and I'm 5st over weight, I imagined being happy with 3st loss, but maybe not.

I do go on holiday in sept though, if I can do 2lb week ill lose the 3st!

We CAN DO IT! you're right!

postmanpatscat · 15/03/2013 21:47

Ouch, storm ! Yes, we can do it!

BetsyVanBell · 15/03/2013 22:11

storm Nearly bedtime! Focus on smaller targets if you can - pick a number and aim for that first, then re-assess. If it helps I've managed to lose 3 stone in 18months and I'm sure if I'd been 5:2ing earlier in the process I'd have lost it a lot quicker! That 3 stone was incomprehensible 18 months ago and I wasn't aiming for my current weight at all. Just went down in stages with plenty of plateaus, some increases too but ultimately down overall. It can be done and you can do it if you want to :)

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 15/03/2013 22:24

Keep going, Storm. 600 cals is really good. I have a similar amount to lose - I try and set interim goals, to break it down into manageable sections. So, don't think about the whole thing, just think about the next half-stone - that's a month or so. You can do that.
