5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Ive been a little sceptical about this 5:2 diet since starting 3 weeks ago. Ive been on mfp for almost a year very slowly losing (now) 20 lbs from 157lbs on a 5ft4 frame

Week 1: managed 500 cals on 2 days but crazy eating on other 5 - lost 2.2 lbs.
Week 2: had flu and skipped fasting, ate loads and unhealthily - maintained.
Week 3: 700 cals on 2 days, other days pretty ok - lost 2.4 lbs.

The first two weeks I did think this wasn't a good WOE for me as I dont like my eating going too nuts on the eat days. By nuts I mean entire family size bars of chocolate hoovered up in seconds. This week I feel more balanced and def up for giving it another 2 weeks to see if this is something sustainable for me. The fasting is also getting less scary the more I do it - I sleep better now and worry less that I cant do it.

To anyone wavering this is worth a trial for a month or 2.

artemis17 · 15/03/2013 09:51

ok i will consider myself given an online shake by you all Wink I also think that having never owned a set of scales, nipping into Boots every friday makes it seem a bit more of an issue than just a "private viewing" so maybe i should buy a set of my own?. Anyway i will continue to 5-2, bound to be easier in the warmer weather.....

greenfig · 15/03/2013 10:59

Morning all & well done on some fantastic friday results! Big shout out to postmanpat & have a happy time when dh comes homeSmile
I'm also a dark choc fan or sometimes a mug of strong cocoa made with skimmed milk & a drop of agave does the trick.
artemis & inlovewithchoc I'm also on the last few lbs & this week I am only 1/4lb down although I did have a choc related slip up on my fast yesterdayBlush so only have myself to blame! I lost really well my first week but that was newly gained holiday weight. It has since slowed a bit.
I previously lost 1 1/2 stone & have maintained well bouncing around within 7lbs for over a year now. However, I had to be quite disciplined with regard to carbs & alcohol or I would immediately see a disheartening result on the scales. It can be pretty miserable, feels antisocial, & can make budgeting & eating as a family tricky.
Having seen the horizon programme I feel 5:2 is a much more healthy approach physically & mentally for me.
I find it can be difficult with the last few lbs as I feel sooo much better than I did pre weight loss that it's easy to get complacent.
The positives that are keeping me motivated are:
the reduced appetite on post fast days,
the energised feeling,
the fact that nothing is off limits on 5 days of the week which makes me think about what I really want to eat.
Maybe incorporate some core exercises? I am doing safs yoga, some Jillian Michaels & some pop pilates from youtube as well as walking. We can support each otherSmile

swallowedAfly · 15/03/2013 11:04

i've just done the yoga. glad to see that a couple of days off hasn't sent me back to square one - managed to do it straight through and keep up the effort throughout. blumming grateful when i get to the end though Grin

Dotty342kids · 15/03/2013 11:22

headintheclouds that's brilliant! Well done! I'm ever so slightly jealous!!
Don't know what's happening with me this week, my scales have bounced all over the place between 11st 1 and 11st 3 and this morning registered both weights within five minutes of each other. I'm not sure they're working entirely accurately!
Anyone recommend any decent scales?

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 15/03/2013 11:30

Dotty I got a set of Salter body fat/water ones off Amazon for £9.99 Grin they are pretty good.

Am doing 5:2 this week as am freezing due to broken boiler (again) and needed some tea and biscuits to get me through. Had a very successful 2 fasts this week and an 8lb loss so far along with 10 inches. My belly fat is now more like loose skin, so I am trying to do as much 'core' related workouts as I can to try and firm that area up.

BetsyVanBell · 15/03/2013 11:32

I'm doing a mini fast today - so no breakfast, small soup lunch, avoid snacks during my danger zone (4 to 5pm) but have a normal dinner (ie I want some carbs later!). So should work out that over a 24 hour period I'll have

artemis17 · 15/03/2013 11:34

Hey Greenfig thanks for the info, im thinking as i dont have scales i dont see point .25 or whatever of a gram, pound etc going so am looking at "whole" numbers iyswim.
I do exercise quite a bit, zumba x2 a week and over an hours body combat which is very intense and hurts lol as well as doing a lot of walking. I feel better having heard a few others slow losers so will keep on keeping on! :)

frenchfancy · 15/03/2013 12:39

Firsttimer Don't forget that the only thing making you (or stopping you from) eating family sized bars of chocolate is you. It is not the diet. This WOE gives you control it doesn't take it away from you. You are stronger than that. You can resist the urge to eat it all. (if you can't then don't buy it in the first place)

Firsttimer7259 · 15/03/2013 12:53

frenchfancy am well aware that to eat or not remains my choice, but what I meant was that in the first week I found my self control totally out of whack. It seems to have settled now and if it stays that way Im happy with this approach. If I find I cant manage to eat reasonably healthily on eat days when I do 5:2 then its an approach Im not sure would be particularly good for me and I would rethink staying on 5:2. To my mind the hardest part of weight loss/control is mental and if 5:2 creates a mentality in me where I eat giant chocolate bars a lot then thats not really how I want to eat regardless of weight lost.

Minimammoth · 15/03/2013 13:15

Having another go at fast day today, lower weight has held, so fingers crossed. I am trying to make my goal weight in steps. Lose 7lbs first then re group.

headintheclouds · 15/03/2013 13:36

Dotty dont be slightly jealous of me ! you are doing really well and inspiring and supporting people ,I love reading your posts. But I know what you mean - i feel a little Envy at swallowed who' s dropped 11lbs in the same time as me. But its not a race / competition is it... Im glad for everyone who's doing so well, and looking forward to the next 7 weeks and 7 lbs off hopefully!

headintheclouds · 15/03/2013 13:38

forgot to say dotty ive just got a cheap set of salter digital scales that Ive had for several years, they are fine.

Talkinpeace · 15/03/2013 13:55

Point to ponder : Flat tummies etc
There is no reason at all that older women (I'm nearly 48) cannot be toned and trim. They just have to work at it.
If you are losing weight then you NEED to up your exercise so that the body that appears from under the quilt is toned.
Pilates, Yoga and LOTS of Swiss ball work
will make your tummy muscles taut, and as they have less visceral fat behind them and subcutaneous fat in fromt of them, that will translate into a flatter tummy.
NB
All normal people have either a rounded tummy or a rounded bum.
Only scrawny youngsters have neither.

tracedw · 15/03/2013 14:19

Hi all, i had a good weigh in this morning, today 9st 6.6 ...hurrah, down from 9.8 on Monday, so very pleased .
My weight plateaued a few weeks ago , 9st 9 for 3 weeks,so i decided to up calories on non-fast days and it seems to have worked, my TDEE is only 1480 and i was regularly not going over 1100-1200.
So 7.5lbs in 8 weeks Grin and a BMI of 24.3 now (and 2 inches off my waist, back fat ,be gone!)

Dotty342kids · 15/03/2013 14:26

Aw, thanks for the support headintheclouds, that does really help.
Great news tracedw too, you must be so chuffed!

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 15/03/2013 14:55

Hi all - I am a Mumsnet newbie, attracted by these 5:2 threads, which I found while reading up on 5:2. Been calorie-counting since mid-Jan, switched to 5:2 about 3 weeks ago. Working v well for me so far, lost 12lb - but still got a LONG way to go. Aiming for 12 and a half stone by the time my cousin gets married in mid-June - am currently 13'8.

I like 5:2 because it makes a lot of sense to me - I've tried Weightwatchers in the past but hated it because I always like to be able to 'cheat' a little - I love food and cooking! 5:2 fits in so well with my normal life.

I've just got back from a long weekend in France, with lots of nice food and wine - was 3lb up yesterday but after a fast, am 1lb down - 4lb change in a day! Amazing. So, back on track.

My goals at the mo are:
Short term: start building exercise into my routine (have bought a yoga DVD!);
Medium term: get down to 12-something stone (hopefully by mid-May);
Long term: 12 and a half. And then I can start to think about aiming for a healthy BMI !!!

swallowedAfly · 15/03/2013 15:11

err 12.6lbs actually Grin

until tomorrow when the scales say something totally different Wink

FastFeeder · 15/03/2013 15:13

From the 'Cashing in on 5:2' file, I came across this residential spa programme today. A snip at only £1,295 for a week (£1,495 in high season)!

starlady · 15/03/2013 15:31

waves back after a long while. Good to see the stalwarts, and of course lots of newbies. I've been continuing the 5:2-ing, but darn it, weight is stuck or either moving up! I know it's because I'm eating too much,on my eating days, so not looking for advice - or sympathy. I know what I have to do! Just wanted to grouch! At least the benefits of feeling great after a fast day are still there! Mixing it up a bit today. Ate large brekkie - peach and yoghurt, then an egg sarnie Blush today. I'll have 500 cals at 7pm, then not eat till 7pm sat. That's the plan anyway ...

Itsaboatjack · 15/03/2013 15:33

Fast day today and I'm really struggling to tolerate how cold I feel. I've had to break my fast earlier than planned and get a latte on the way to school just hoping my body will think now its getting some calories it can divert some energy into warming me up.

swallowedAfly · 15/03/2013 15:37

i'm on an eat day (though haven't eaten yet) and have been good all week. am wondering whether to do a home cooked meal and be 'good' or to order a takeaway. umming and ahhing.

ha at the residential spa programme - what a bargain Wink

systemsaddict · 15/03/2013 15:53

Itsaboatjack the cold on fast days is what I struggle with the most too - didn't expect it as I don't usually feel the cold but my teeth have been chattering and hot drinks haven't been warming me up.

Talkinpeace · 15/03/2013 15:57

Fastfeeder
that takes the biscuit for cashing in. Love it.

Ninunina · 15/03/2013 16:24

You all have a really good point regarding dark chocolate. When I was living in the UK I only bought Lindt dark chocolate with chilli or green & blacks. I used to manage to keep it down to 2 blocks a day. I don't live in the Uk anymore, and can't find G&B and rarely find the lindt, so I've been buying the deliciously moreish praline stuff. I will do myself a favour and stock up on G&B off Amazon in order to save my waistline Grin
Thanks all. .. very good advice!
