5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 11/03/2013 15:33

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Would much prefer chips with my steakGrin Thank goodness it's a fast day for me! I would have to eat something daisy or will that make you more hungry? Also I can never wait for DH to get home to eat on a fast day, I eat with the babes.

greenfig · 14/03/2013 15:33

Sorry that was to dotty daisy as you were, enjoy your steakWink

Daisy1407 · 14/03/2013 15:55

rocketleaf · 14/03/2013 16:12

Hello all,

I resumed fasting yesterday after a bit pf a disheartened break, which wasnt the easiest as I had a pregnant freind over and ALL she talked about was food! I have been "good" today too as I am eating out this evening plus I am logging everything on MFP to make sure i eat up to my TDEE. But the problem with a Wednesday fast is that i don't know when to do the 2nd one. I could do tomorrow but Friday night without wine makes me :( And we are out for a meal with friends on Saturday so it would have to be Sunday which also seems a bit wrong but would probably be easier. Does anyone else fast on the weekend or am i just setting myself up to fail?

monster i am so sorry you are struggling, I too am trying to lose the baby weight after well over a year and its frustrating to be sure. It does sound like you are not eating enough on off days. If its any consolation I didn't lose much in the first 5 weeks although i have recently discovered DD has been fiddling with the scales and I am a few pounds lighter than I thought I was which has cheered me up a bit!

rocketleaf · 14/03/2013 16:13

Also how on earth to you track you calories when you are eating out? Or shall i just write it off as a splurge?

BsshBossh · 14/03/2013 16:25

rocket I do close approximations/guestimations of food I eat out. I never fast on weekends as we do a lot of social eating then and too many temptations with DD and DH around. But you might be fine! If I were you I'd forgo wine on Friday and make that a fast day then you can relax all weekend and drink wine.

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2013 16:33

postman well spotted - yes 10st would be one hell of a loss Grin i meant under 11st.

greenfig Grin at keeping your golden flame lit. tell you what i have noticed over the years is even if i just start being conscious of those muscles and engaging them whilst going about my normal business - walking, sitting, whatever it starts to make a difference quite quickly. confession - i haven't done the yoga for two days now.

am back from london and have a bit of time at home before zooming off to parents evening. supposed to be a fast day but i'm feeling hungry. i think this week i have ended up quite low cal on eat days so i'm thinking if i feel the need to go over 500 today i will and not worry about it too much. have had mini fasts even on eat days and at least one eat day ended up being under 100cals. yesterdays probably didn't reach my tdee either. will see how i go.

managed to resist fresh bacon bagels and the like that were laid out for us when we arrived at the seminar and to not go for the free lunch afterwards. black coffee all the way. have a day off tomorrow and am very glad. will get back on the yoga from tomorrow.

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2013 16:53

god and i mean one day was under 1000 not 100cals - that would be low cal for an eating day. good job i'm more accurate at work than online Blush

Talkinpeace · 14/03/2013 16:58

So far on this fast day I have been to three supermarkets, done a Bodybalance class, had half a swim and helped DH put blinds up.
Looking forward to soup for supper.
He's done the fast but will have a full supper as he has a killer day at work tomorrow. And he did his whole swim this morning.

Anybody stuck weight wise - try to up your activity levels - ESPECIALLY on fast days.
Run up the stairs, stand up while posting on here, do the ironing etc etc

dines · 14/03/2013 17:26

Hi everyone having a brilliant fast day today was bit tough around 11-12 but kept about Havnt eating since 7.30 last night and I don't even feel hungry.. so almost a 24 hour fast. I could go the hole day without eating as I don't feel hungry.. has anyone done that before or is that bad? I've had suger in coffee and milk but no food..

dines · 14/03/2013 17:29

I'm looking forward to I slice of red velvet cake tomorrow I c it last week at a cafe that I normally go to on a Friday morning and have Been dreaming about it ever since lol I measured myself again today and have lost another half an inch off my stomach and waist..so in three weeks I've lost 2 and a half inches in total

BsshBossh · 14/03/2013 17:55

Well I've made it to 6pm without food and it feels easy again now so am able to wait until my dinner at 8.30. Won't be 24 hours, more like 22, but I'll take it Grin. My struggle period today was between 2 and 5. But I'm so glad I stuck it out as a) it's weigh in Friday tomorrow and b) I can now look forward to three days of normal eating. Hurrah!

BsshBossh · 14/03/2013 17:59

That's fantastic inch loss dines. It's amazing isn't it? I've lost more inches more quickly, especially on my tummy and back, on this WOE than my dieting all of last year! That's the body fat burning advantages of this WOE I think.

BlackMaryJanes · 14/03/2013 18:05

Eeeeee BsshBossh are you pigging out on non-fast days?

Dotty342kids · 14/03/2013 18:11

Thanks for the support ladies, much appreciated!
Bssbossh I think the headache is mainly due to the legacy of a very stressful work day on Monday and then a very late night on Tuesday (took DS to see Olly Murs in concert for his 10th birthday!).
However, I have had a plain cracker and a couple of mouthfuls of the kids baked beans and here I am, it's 6.15 and tea is on the horizon Grin. Thank goodness for that!
rocketleaf I fasted one weekend, on the Sunday as I just couldn't fit another one in that week and it wasn't too bad. DH fasted too, which helped but still had to do the kids breakfast / lunches. Thing that kept me going was knowing I was going to have a lovely roast chicken for my tea. I only have breast meat, without skin anyway, only had a couple of small roasties and had heaps and heaps of all my favourite veg. Might work for you too?

Itsaboatjack · 14/03/2013 19:02

Evening all. Good to see everyone is doing well on their fast days.

I've managed to get a handle on the fast days from quite early on even getting up to 20-24hrs with no food at all. But I have been struggling the last few weeks though with feed days, after the initial enthusiasm and 'being good' attitude at the start of this woe, I was starting to over eat quite a lot on eating days.

Someone mentioned further back in the thread about planning, I was planning well on fast days which helped make them easier, but I wasn't really planning on feed days so too many of them were starting to get out of control. So I've been refocusing a bit on feed days, not controlling everything as after all this woe is supposed to be about getting out of the dieting mentality; but just thinking a bit about what I am doing during the day and thinking about a few options for healthy choices. So today's eating day has gone well, I made a shepherds pie for dinner which we had with cabbage, so nice and nutritious and filling, not low in calories but well within my TDEE, even with the glass of wine.

greenfig · 14/03/2013 19:04

Oh poop. I did a straight 18 hrs & then had all my cals by 6pm & felt fine then scoffed a piece of rocky road that the babes made for red nose day. Angry
Was hoping for a new low tomorrow tooSad

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2013 19:08

well fast day and i've had wine, baked beans with chilli oil, shredded turkey ham and a dollop of philly light for my dinner. oh and i had a little pack of sushi when i got in. i'm over 500 - about 600 and might yet have a choc digestive.

only done one under 500 day this week but have had long 'fasts' every day and very low to low cals everyday. tomorrow i'm meant to be going for a full english so that'll mix things up a bit.

must, must, must do yoga tomorrow - can someone please remind me and nag me? willing to offer any reminder, nagging, whatever services needed in kind Smile

swallowedAfly · 14/03/2013 19:10

greenfig it might yet be fine! just don't take it as a 'well i've fucked it now so i might as well keep scoffing' trigger.

greenfig · 14/03/2013 19:29

Thanks saf Perhaps if I go & do yoga the scales fairies will be kind. GO & DO SOME YOURSELF!! Consider yourself naggedGrin

BsshBossh · 14/03/2013 19:29

BMJ, pigging out as per usual Grin. Although my appetite and portion sizes must have gone down a fair bit as whenever I say "I'm stuffed!" DH looks at me and exclaims "But you didn't actually eat loads!" Pigging out in March 2013 is much less than the pigging out I used to do this time last year.

BsshBossh · 14/03/2013 19:31

Forgot to add BMJ I still do 16:8 on non-fast days (though not weekends!) so that curtails any overeating, I've found. I like limits.

wildwater · 14/03/2013 20:10

TIP - I so agree! Upping the exercise on fast days seems to do nothing but good. And it doesn't make me any hungrier.

NurseEzzzaChapel · 14/03/2013 20:19

Been having trouble staying motivated on fast days since coming back to the UK. The first week back was ok, which I think was down to excitement at being back, but then I found Saturday just gone was quite tough and on Tuesday I ended up abandoning the fast pretty early in the day. I think it's because I've been living in a nice, almost entirely stress-free, academic bubble so I found it easy to eat next to nothing on fast days then.

Now I'm back in the real world the fast days seem to be harder and the non-fast days seem to include eating a bit too much at the moment. I hope the non-fast days will settle down again once I get into a routine again. In the meantime, I think I will have to plan my fast days a bit better. Yesterday I planned today's fast: 12 noon a whole tin of chunky chicken and veg soup and 6pm scampi, tartare sauce and veggies which totalled just under 500 kcal for the day. I felt much better about the fasting today, especially compared with Tuesday, so I think I'll be doing some proper food for lunch and dinner on a fast day for now.
