The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

Ezzza I'm sure it'll all settle down, just need to get into some new routines I expect. Must be a bit of a culture shock in many ways! Just remember, you completely surpassed your own expectations in China so your starting point back here in the UK is vastly better than you thought it would be (if I've been reading your report right anyway...). Let yourself settle into it and it'll be fine. Proper food is a very good thing. Grin

Reporting in. Have finally turned the old house over to the letting agency after a very long bout of packing/tidying/carpet cleaning. Carpet cleaning alone has left me exhausted, but I have the machine for another day so am going to do as much as I can in the new house before returning it. I imagine I've burned a load of calories but have been too busy to even think about it. :)

My mum's visiting from the US as well so am busy with that. No doubt we'll be having more meals out than usual because of this, but I'm just sticking with my fast days and hoping for the best. I fasted Monday and today as usual.

Carpet cleaning is tiring but strangely satisfying!

Ezzza don't be too hard on yourself. Your hhave done so well up to now, imagine when you started this you never thought you would lose weight, and you've lost loads AND started running.

Why not have a couple of weeks of maintenance - go 5:2 or 6:1 then get back into the swing.

Yay!! I have managed to do a fast!! Nothing for 22 hours. Just had some carrot and cucumber sticks with hummus, and have an innocent veg pot in the fridge. Hasn't been easy but have kept myself busy and its nearly over! Hoping this is the new start I need! Thanks for the encouraging messages - it really helped! Smile

Hi everyone only just checking in now as ipad was out of charge and been busy all day! Really easy fast today didn't eat until around 2pm and prob could have gone longer but was in town with my friend who is so fasting and she was really struggling! Had a salad nicoise from Pret only 170 cals.

Greenfig.... Dinner tonight was oven baked cod in a tomato and caper sauce, sautéed garlic and peppers then add capers and kalamata olives (tablespoon of each) add a tin of chopped tomatoes season and warm through then put in oven proof dish and place a 130g cod loin on top squeeze of lemon and oven bake for 15 mins severed 207 calories then served with 2 tbsp cous cous 65 calories, washed down with san pellegrino and lime juice in a champagne flute!

Had my weigh in yesterday and had gained a pound so not impressed but got weighed today on my old scales and I was two pounds less than on my new scales so that was pleasing so 2 pounds of the 3 pounds I gained suddenly was down to new scales not over eating!!

Just added my calories up on MFP and have gone over by about 40 today first time on a fast day! It's DH fault he is having a bake off at work and so I helped him to make a cake. He took my advice and we made a chocolate, hazelnut and pear cake, I couldn't resist licking be spoon! It's out of the oven now and smells divine.

Second fast day is done! Was easier than the first, I think.

A tin of Baxters chicken broth (128cals) for lunch and a nicoise for dinner (came in just under 300 and very filling). Throw in a couple of cups of tea and water and still under 500. Very pleased.

Oh and yesterday, non-fat day, came in around 1100cals without really trying. And that included a tunnocks tea cake...

Hi all!
First time poster here - joined for this thread, I read about this diet and watched the MM documentary and I think it's brilliant, I've fasted for religious purposes before but never thought about doing it for weight loss. The idea of only doing two 'repair/fast' days and eating relatively healthy for the other 5 is great, so sustainable!
I've picked Tuesdays and Fridays as my fast days ( 400 cals) and the rest of the week I'll be eating 1500 calories.

I'm 19 years old, 5'7 and 12 stone Sad Blush so ashamed I've let myself get this fat. I'm hoping to lose 2 stone, going to be combining the 5:2 diet with Callanetics 5x weekly. Good luck to everyone! You have all inspired me to start this wonderful w.o.e

Welcome shan. You could probably eat another 400 cals on your non-fast days. Especially as you will be exercising regularly. You don't want to feel deprived on your food days or let your body get used to too few cals. You should aim for your TDEE which looks like it is closer to 2200 cals for you. The fast days will provide the defecit you need to lose weight.

Welcome shan...definitely up your fast calories, I'm 9st7 and I still eat 500 even though my tdee is just under 1700. It must be working since I've lost 8lbs in three weeks on 5:2 :)

Thank you both for the advice. I'm really excited about this and I don't want to go too far too quick and burn out, so fast days will be 500 calories and normal days will be 2000. This sounds much more reasonable

PP's cat!! 8lbs in 3 weeks!! That is fantastic, well done you! Were you exercising at all in those 3 weeks or was it just through 5:2 alone?

Very sensible shan (you could actually go to your TDEE of 2200 on non-fast days. Check your TDEE on the calculator in the OP). I've lost 9 lbs in 6 weeks eating 500 cals twice a week and TDEE (for me around 2000-2200 cals) the rest of the time. I exercise but don't eat back those cals as they are included in my TDEE. Good luck to you! My fast day is over today and I am looking forward to three days of good, normal, delicious eating :)

I'm such a chocoholic! I'm so addicted to chocolate that I'm even finding ways of having it on my fast days. Sometimes I prefer to go without a meal to have my chocolate, surely that's not healthy! Can someone tell me off?

phew shan i'm glad you listened to others - that sounded a pretty deprived plan you were starting with Smile don't be ashamed. i started out at 12st and i too am 5'7. 6weeks in and this morning i'm 11.1.4. you'll soon start to see a difference.

be prepared to see ups and downs if you weigh regularly and to look for the downward trend rather than react to every number you see on the scales. also take your measurements now so you can watch those too for further feedback - some people find even weeks where they haven't seen the scales go down their waist has and that keeps them going.

yesterday i kept really noticing that my face is looking nice Blush i don't spend my whole life gazing in mirrors honest. think a bit of weight has gone off of my face and my cheek bones and jaw line are emphasised again rather than looking puffy.

i am really, really pleased to see 11.1.4 today - new record low for me and being 10 something seems so close and achievable now.

have had very good news about an overseas trip with work - we'll be filming the trip and using it in a diversity dvd i'm producing so there's a bit more motivation for me. i don't fancy looking like a bloated hamster in a film that will be being used for years to come at work and beyond. i know how vain that sounds but - well shoot me, i'm vain Grin

i really really don't want to bounce back up. supposed to be going out for a fry up with a friend today but i really don't fancy the calories or the clogging up my digestive system.

ninu - i was in a similar boat with both chocolate and super decadent ice cream. how long have you been doing this woe for? i am genuinely surprised to find i couldn't tell you the last time i had ice cream or a chocolate pig out. for my treats this week i've had a few chocolate digestives that i've really enjoyed but have done nowhere near as much damage as the alternative.

swallowed I've been doing this WOE for just over a month. Last week didn't go too well though. This week has been far better, but I'm craving chocolate like mad. My bmi is good, but I'd still like to lose 4kg to reach my ideal weight. I don't eat a huge amount at mealtimes anymore, but I can't kick the sweet habit. My concern is that we're soon going to start ttc #2 and I'll put on all the weight I lost since I won't be able to fast. I'd better work on kicking the chocolate habit now.

Rather than trying to cut out chocolate altogether why not try and adjust you tastebuds to the darker richer chocolate. Since doing 5:2 I have discovered a love for lindt dark chocolate with sea salt and caramel. It is delish. I like it so much that any other chocolate now tastes meh, or even unpleasant. As it is richer two small squares really stops any cravings.

i think it's cold turkey really with sugar addictions ninu. with chocolate and sugar you can get really addicted to the high you get from it. i gave up drinking for 7months and managed to replace the pleasure of sipping a couple of glasses of wine of an evening with inhaling my body weight in chocolate and/or ice cream and getting that serotonin high that follows. it's where most of my weight gain came from.

go to no chocolate on your fast days and trying to buy a limited 'this is what i can have tonight' portion on your non fast days and believe you can kick the habit. i don't buy the whole 'nibble on carrot sticks instead' Grin but you can replace i think - my eating a few chocolate digestives when i get the want to eat sweet stuff urge (not every day) is far less damaging than nailing an entire pot of ben and jerry's phish food or a 200g slab of chocolate.

ninu what kind of chocolate? Assuming its standard sweet shop stuff try moving towards the purer, darker, types. You might want to do it gradually and adjust your taste buds slowly - but the odd square of 70% dark chocolate is actually not a bad thing, health wise. You can also make some great savoury sauces using pure cocoa powder (not drinking chocolate).

You migh find its not the chocolate you re addicted to but the sugar/fat combo it generally represents - that too should be something that gets easier to manage. as SaF says, most people who've been doing this a while find that our binge/treat triggers and mechanisms have had their settings changed. You too might find that overdosing on chocolate becomes eating 3 chocolate digestives and then not wanting any more Grin though I think any form of digestive is pretty hard to resist
