5:2 Diet Thread! Number 15! Our quinceañera!

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

Michael Mosley has recently unveiled a new website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

hi once...,don't forget to report in later-maybe that thought will keep you on the straight n narrow. Plus remember to keep hydrated. Im fasting today too, looking forward to my stirfry and a mango for laters. mmm. Oh yes, its just todaySmiletomorrow is friday and I feel some wine is in order if Im good today

monster54 · 14/03/2013 10:23

Thanks BetsyVanBell...all of which I accept.

But surely the maths is the same? I should be loosing at least something? I can't see the logic that eating more is going to help reduce the weight?

Hmmmmm thing is I enjoy the meal replacements. Just for lunch, it is easy and fits in with my busy day.

I don't really know where to go from here really....

mistlethrush · 14/03/2013 10:30

Monster - the thing is your body adjusts down - so the difference between a fast day and a normal day will be less so you won't lose as much (or something like that) - its a real change after counting calories for years and failing miserably.

But weight loss started very slowly with me - and is still slow but clearly on a downward slope, and I'm losing inches off waist and thighs Grin.

You really would be much better off with something like a pot of ready soup rather than a 'meal replacement' as they tend to be much less processed etc - I do struggle with weight loss so my normal days are lowish-GI but not rigid on that and do include treats etc (although most people would be able to lose weight on my 'normal with treats' days - its just how my body works!!!)

Dotty342kids · 14/03/2013 10:34

monster I'd echo what's being said about eating up to your TDEE on your "eating days". For starters you can then relax and the whole thing feels like less of a chore. But, from what I can gather from the sciency bits of MM's book, one of the key aspects of what makes this work is flicking the switch between the fasting / eating states. Because your calorie intake is pretty low, even on your eating days, this flicking of the switch is much less obvious and may therefore not be triggering your body into using up the fat stores / losing weight.

monster54 · 14/03/2013 10:35

I know I would accept a slow loss...but to have put on...I'm just bemused!

This is the frustrating thing, I'm trying to find something that 'works' for me and my body...but nothing seems to. Tried desperately the last 6 months to shift some of the weight and I'm exactly where I started 6 months ago....urrrgghhhh!!

Just going to find a pillow have a good scream and sob and reassess tomorrow :o(

BetsyVanBell · 14/03/2013 10:46

monster there needs to be a contrast between your eating a fast days. It's good news, you're going to get to eat more and relax a bit, stop being on a diet! Go through some recipe books or whatever and get some good ideas for nice things to eat, maybe eat that thing you've been craving but weren't allowed on your previous, endless diets. It sounds like you need to re-learn how to eat normally. You've proven to yourself that don't work, this WOE will (when you stop treating it like a diet) :), ok I admit that's not very scientific but what have you got to lose?! (except lbs Grin)

BetsyVanBell · 14/03/2013 10:47

ahem... "that diets don't work" I mean.

systemsaddict · 14/03/2013 10:50

Second fast day of the week today - not done one with only a day's gap in between before. Hungry but putting off my porridge as long as I can!

monster54 · 14/03/2013 10:53

Will give it a whirl....still feel v sick so my appetite is not amazing anyway :o/ but will try my best to up my cals nearer to my TDEE....can you reset MFP to reflect 1800??

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 14/03/2013 11:01

Monster - look at changing the settings to maintenance and that should give around your TDEE on mfp Grin

monster54 · 14/03/2013 11:09

Thanks guys!

Going to give things another week...see what happens!

greenfig · 14/03/2013 11:20

NurseEzzzaChapel · 14/03/2013 12:06

"Fast day for me, got up this morning and TMI alert - the world fell out of my bottom. Had the same issue on Sunday. Definitely no constipation here Blush" postmanpatscat, you're not alone. When I first started, I found the day after a fast was all quite normal, but the day after that I had the same issue you've come across, and so did a friend who started at the same time as me. It settles down, don't worry!

BlackMaryJanes · 14/03/2013 12:34

Yeah, why do us ladies poo more at that time of the month? Confused

NurseEzzzaChapel · 14/03/2013 12:46

BMJ, I can't say that I've noticed any difference around TOTM. I was talking about the effects of fasting in that area in response to postmanpatscat's post.

BlackMaryJanes · 14/03/2013 12:56

Google 'poo loads during period'.

It's quite common.

Dotty342kids · 14/03/2013 13:48

I'm really struggling today. Normally fast days are fine up to about 3.00ish when I have something like a banana.
Today I've been ravenous from the offset and it's now so bad that I'm actually feeling really sick (and I'm on day two of a headache which I just can't shift despite painkillers and drinking lots of water).
Still got to pick the kids up from school and then bake scones (bloody Comic RElief cake sales!) and then get through to teatime for me and DH - at about 7.00.
HELP!

ComeTalkToMe · 14/03/2013 13:49

Hi all,

On fast day 4 here and it's a lot easier than fast day three for some reason. I usually always eat at lunch time but I'm not hungry so just having a herbal tea, hope this means I can do 24 hours before my 500cal.

monster you sound really low about it all and I recognise that feeling from sooooo many diets. Hope you feel better soon and find a way of making this work for you.

I find this thread really helpful in staying motivated, think I might try some of the yoga you guys have been talking about too Smile

Anja1Cam · 14/03/2013 14:48

Dotty342kids I feel your pain re: the baking, I had the same problem yesterday! I never even licked the spoon, but made sure I baked after my main meal (dinner). I did have to have a 40-cal hot choc afterwards though! All that kept me going was that I would be allowed a piece today Grin after all I actually organised the sale (it was a great success and we raised over £120 now!)

Good luck YOU CAN DO IT!

Daisy1407 · 14/03/2013 14:54

Craving a glass of wine or a G&T tonight #needed
im also having chippy tonight I THINK - However ive been told its national Steak and Bl#wjob day #DreamOnFella's LOL

TheCatInTheHairnet · 14/03/2013 14:57

The 5:2 has arrived in NY!! I was in the gym earlier and some women were talking about it in the changing room. They were saying how it sounded impossible. I don't normally butt into conversations, but I did this time and said it was fantastic and told them how much weight I'd lost.

I should have told them about this thread lol!

ComeTalkToMe · 14/03/2013 15:08

Daisy1407 My DH told me about that day too... I told him I'm fasting...

TheCatInTheHairnet · 14/03/2013 15:10

Cometalk it was the 4th fast day it really kicked in for me. After that I felt a lot less hungry all the time, not just fast days.

My taste in food is totally different. I used to love Chinese takeout. We had the first one in ages on Monday and I was very Bleeeuurgh about it.

BsshBossh · 14/03/2013 15:14

Dotty342kids I'm finding it hard today too. I think it's the freezing cold weather, or perhaps just the mountain of chocolate I ate yesterday (coming down from a TOM-induced sugar & carb rush). But I want to stick at it and not eat until dinner time. Let's stick at it together!!! (Although your headache is worrying me... In your experience does food make your headaches subside?)

Sugarice · 14/03/2013 15:15

Hi all

Bought the MM book today from ASDA, great read so far and I'm full of enthusiasm on day1Grin.

Had some crackers, smoked salmon and hummus at about 11.00 this morning and am just having a hunger pang and ignoring it!

Prepped some food for ds's and dh for later and consumed black coffee with no sweeteners, hard work but doable. Hoping to last til tomorrow morning now and looking forward to poached eggs on a piece of toast.
