Contraception at 42 & overweight

I’ve got my 6 week post baby check next week and need to sort some contraception.

I'm wondering what I will be realistically offered? Trying to lose weight but breastfeeding so it’s slow going & I have a lot to lose. We had previously just tracked my cycle as we knew we’d try to conceive and if happened before we officially started trying that would be fine but definitely don’t want another baby and I believe I may have been peri as previously clockwork cycle had started to be irregular.

I have taken the pill & used the contraceptive implant before and never had issues with either but my OB consultant said I’m too old for those now?

no sign of my period yet but again I know that’s not reliable either

Mirena or copper coil?

Mirena or copper coil?

I’m such a baby, friends have said having it fitted is awful.

They offered to do it during the c-section and I chickened out 😂

I haven’t had children and it was ok. Sore for as long as it took to say FUCK and it was done
I have had 3 copper coils and now a mirena

I'm 44 this year and back on the pill.

Mini pill

Unorganisedchaos2 · 23/06/2026 12:07

@Matildahoney@TallulahBetty

Do you mind me asking if you’re overweight, the consultant definitely says I was too old for the pill but I’m wondering if really I’m too heavy?

Vasectomy for your DP surely?

pkt3chgirl · 23/06/2026 12:33

Had my baby at 44 and went on the pill. They made me come off at 50 though.

Your consultant doesn't know what they're talking about. You can use the progesterone only pill, implant, and injection up to age 55.

You can have a progesterone only pill and implant at any BMI. Only the combined pill is contraindicated at BMI >35 and I wouldn't recommend the depo injection at a higher BMI as it can cause weight gain.

(Disclaimer -following a proper assessment obviously - I'm a nurse practitioner)

I'm 14 stone. Had to get my head back in it to lose weight after 2 missed miscarriages at 12 weeks in less than 6 months!

Thank you for this, this is exactly what the doctor said and was happy to prescribe the mini pill so I'll see how I get on.

I think she was just pressuring me to get sterilized 🙄

Thank you for all the replies.

GP was lovely and happy to prescribe the mini pill or do an implant so I've decided on the pill for now.

The consultant made me feel awful for falling pregnant and my age and weight and it was brought up at every appointment and made very clear I must never have another baby so I was feeling defensive, but much better now for having a chat with the GP 😊

Or condoms?

Anyway congratulations on your new baby 😊

Yep, this is exactly what I’d do. You did the hard work, grew the baby and had the c section it’s absolutely his turn.
