Mirena coil at 44?

I am contemplating what contraception to go for following the birth of my 2nd child at 44. Although I only have IVF pregnancies I don’t want to risk a natural pregnancy at that age (I’m sure some reading this will think I’m too old already for this baby). I am tossing up between the Mirena, the copper coil and just getting sterilised as I could do it at the same time as my C-section. The main advantage of Mirena seems to be the possibility to use it as part of HRT but are there any disadvantages? I had it once before at age 30 and it was fine but found other hormonal contraception has not agreed with me.

I’d get sterilised while you’re there, as you’re asking about contraception. If it was heavy periods I’d say the mirena.

I’m on my 3rd Mirena and for me they’ve really worked. I do bleed lightly for the first 6 weeks so that is something to bear in mind as a possibility and it didn’t stop my periods but did make them a lot lighter. Now I do use it as part of my HRT.

I’d say give it a try.
