Help - 7lb weight gain in two months with coil

Hi everyone,

I’m just looking for a bit of advice really / to see if anyone has experienced the same thing.

Since having kids and turning 30, I’ve always been around 11 stone, size 12, give or take. I’m not a huge dieter, but eat a balanced, normal diet. However, in the past two months I’ve put on around 7 or 8 pounds, without any noticeable diet changes. I feel bloated, tired and generally heavy all the time, and uncomfortable in my clothes.

I had a coil fitted 3 months ago, which I can’t help but feel is the culprit. However, everything I read says there’s no evidence that a coil can make you gain weight. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

I also take medication for an under-active thyroid - Can a coil interfere with this which could be a cause for the weight gain?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Copper coil or Mirena?

Droolylabradors · 31/07/2024 21:02

If the mirena I have had several episodes where the coil releases a big rush of progesterone alongside my own natural stuff. It's levonogestrel and my gynae consultant told me it was the culprit.

It wasn't weight gain as such, but water retention and bloating. One day it just disappeared again.

I found restricting calories for a couple of weeks helped - possibly because I cut out bread and wine etc for a couple of weeks.

@snowballsintheoven It’s the mirena. I’ve not been on any contraception for 5 years so guess I could just be adjusting to it?

@Droolylabradors thank you. I’ll try that and see how I get on. I did get some probiotics for bloating but they were torture!!

It'll be the hormones in the Mirena, known side effect is weight gain

I've the copper coil - no hormones = no weight gain
