DD (16) is a competitive gymnast who has heavy periods. She is keen to go on the pill to lighten these, and also to give us some flexibility about when she bleeds. She tried microgynon last year which made her gain weight and actually made her period heavier! She's been off it now for a few months but he is keen to try something else – any recommendations for a pill that does not cause weight gain / heavier periods. She has a docs appointment tomorrow. Thanks in advance. She's not using it for contraception at present, but thought I would ask in this section because there will be ladies here who have experience of hormonal contraception. Thanks in advance!

I came on to say Microgynon 30 which has always been fine for me, but I see it didn't work for your DD! Lots of women say the same. I have also used Cilest and Yasmin with no issues

Thank you - I know pills affect women differently but was just hoping to hear the experience of others. She's been using norithesterone to delay them sometimes but it makes them heavier and messes with her cycle afterward

Depo injection? I had no periods when I was on it and I was on it for years from about 18-26 I didn't gain any weight I stayed at 7 st the whole time. But that could just be genetics I'm only just 7st 7 now and I'm nearly 40 and have had 2 children. I also had no periods whilst I was on it which was a bonus as my periods were quite heavy too.

I use cerelle mini pill and it has been great, no periods and no weight gain.

Hi OP, depending on the amount of weight gain do you think it could have been water retention/ changes in fluid balance? If so it might be worth trying yasmin perhaps?
The other alternative is to try the mini pill- this stops bleeding altogether for some women, however it can cause irregular or more frequent bleeding in others but is worth a try as can be stopped if there are problems.
Personally I would think very carefully before considering depo as it stays in the body for at least 12 weeks so you are stuck with it if it causes more bleeding, which is a possibility.
