Coil waiting times

My Mirena coil expired in October of last year. I've been on the waiting list to get it removed & refitted by my GP ever since.... they still can't tell me when exactly they will be able to do it due to a long waiting list. Every clinic in my area is showing up as no appointments.
I'm probably going to have to cough up the money to have it done privately... but why?! A friend of mine (lives in a different area unfortunately) had hers done with only a 2 week wait?!

It seems very odd to me! I know a few with them, doctors had long waits but sexual health clinics were within a week or so.

When I got mine it was approximately a 4 week wait

Would it be an option for you to get it done privately? Waiting time was like 8 months at my local sexual health clinic so I got a Mirena fitted privately last year. Cost about £280 I think.

I've booked to have it done privately now, it was getting ridiculous like I said that there are absolutely 0 clinics near me with any availability.. and the GP is so frustrating as they won't even try to hazard a guess of how long the waiting list. They told me they had moved me to the top of the list - a month and a half ago!
I feel sad for any women who wouldn't be able to pay privately. I don't even have mine fitted for contraception, just for health reasons.

I'm waiting for mine to be removed because I'd like to conceive. It's stuck to needs surgery, I've been waiting nearly 8 months. Does anyone have experience of having this procedure privately?

Snozzlemaid · 24/09/2023 23:57

I was able to get mine fitted much quicker at family planning at local hospital.

My coil is nearly expired so I called on Friday and managed to get an appointment with nurse early December. However, that is just to remove it. I have to make another appointment with a GP to have new one put it. Madness with lack of appointments, tried to address it but evidently they schedule all removal appointments with the nurses, but insertion / 6 week check has to be with GP because internal is done at these. Is this a lack of NHS funding where the nurses who seem to be capable of removing a coil but cant do the examination prior to insertion? Anyone else have this or is it my providers being ackward.
