Severe period pain on copper coil?

selfishmummy · 22/01/2023 14:30

I've had the copper coil 7 months.
My hair is shedding massively which I put down to the effects of stopping the pill, I'm always really tired and I get every bug going since having it in.
I'm on day 3 of my period and I have NEVER had pain like this. I ended up at the out of hours doc I was in that much pain this morning and it still hasn't eased.

What's everyone's experience of the copper coil? Shall I give it up as a bad job?

Poor you! I gave it up for just this reason. The pain was horrendous, and stopped the moment it was removed. It's a common side-effect, unfortunately, so I don't think it's going to improve.

selfishmummy · 22/01/2023 14:59

@Bionesque I really wanted it to work as I love the non hormonal side to it but I just don't think I can go through another period to wait and see if it's painful like this, I can't keep making up excuses why I'm off work!
Will get it removed asap. Did you try anything instead? x

I had one for years and it caused me horrible pain but I put up with it as I didn't want to use hormones.

When I had it taken out, the doctor said it shouldn't have caused pain and might have been inserted wrongly. It's worth asking about.

Squamata · 22/01/2023 15:54

I think there are a few other coil options, the hormonal one is a lower dose than the pill. I used Mirena without pain.

Unfortunately I ended up being in the same boat as you. Hated hormones, but few viable alternatives. I resorted to condoms.

Are you me ? It awful I think I’m getting h mine took out

orangegato · 22/01/2023 21:11

It gets easier after a few! Mine is absolutely fine now, had two over 6-7 years and absolutely no problems now.

BraveMaeve · 22/01/2023 21:14

I had mine for about a year and the pain kept getting worse with heavier bleeding than I'd ever had before. It was awful. I got it swapped over with a mirena and the relief was instant.

selfishmummy · 22/01/2023 21:54

Managed to get a doctors appointment in the morning with the doctor I've seen about contraception since I was 17. I'm hoping she'll take it out for me! Think I might have the injection as a means to an end until I decide what to do. I'm done with babies so wanted a more permanent solution!

24 hours now I've been in absolute agony without any respite. Taken codeine like smarties 😢

How are you feeling today? Good luck with the doctor.

selfishmummy · 23/01/2023 11:57

@BraveMaeve I still feel really sore but a lot better thank you than yesterday. We decided I'm going to have this coil removed and try the mirena coil. She didn't seem a big fan of the idea of the injection. But she couldn't do it today so booked in for a couple of weeks. I really hope it works for me x

Fingers crossed for you, it was like night and day for me, so glad I made the change. I had my copper coil much longer than I wanted as this was a few years ago and my appointment kept getting cancelled due to covid!

Scaevola · 24/01/2023 14:25

I hope the switch works for you.

Did you get a good painkiller prescription to tide you over until it's done?

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 24/01/2023 15:09

I had one some years ago. I managed to put up with it for fifteen months. The period pain was so bad I used to throw up. I also bled like a stuck pig.

Spybot · 24/01/2023 23:56

I had one for 18 months. Ridiculously heavy bleeding. Mid cycle pain where I could feel it sticking in what I presume was the walls of my uterus. There were several times I was on the floor in pain as it made me feel faint. I went to get it out as I couldn't take any more and it wouldn't come out, the strings came off in the physicians hand. Ended up having it out under sedation. Never again. It just isn't a fit for a lot of women.

You'll feel so much better once it's out. Flowers

HamBone · 25/01/2023 00:01

My periods were dreadful on it as well and then it started coming out when I was doing Pilates! So I had to have it removed that day. I stupidly agreed to have another one as I thought it was a fluke…samebad periods and then the second one started coming out!

My doctor advised me not to bother trying another one as they clearly don’t suit me, they don’t work well for everyone. DH decided to get a vasectomy instead. A friend uses Mirena though and says it’s great.

Honey83 · 25/01/2023 00:27

I've had mine for a few years now. I honestly can't remember whether the pain was any different prior to, but def a heavier flow. My periods used to last about 3 days and now it's generally a full week. That is annoying. I think I've stuck with it because of the effort and discomfort it took to fit and I didn't want to have that again to take it out. Although it'll come to that soon.

Yes I had terrible pain and so did my Mum. I managed to keep mine in for 18 months ( I should have taken t out sooner) My mum for less than 24 hours. It doesn't agree with some people , you may need to get it taken out. All my best and feel better soon.xx

Sara0 · 07/04/2023 08:45

@Spybot thanku.. I am getting it removed tomorrow morning

QuinnofHearts · 07/04/2023 08:47

Having the copper coil was the worst decision I've ever made. My periods were so heavy I ended up anaemic, I had endless infections and my cramps were painful. :-(
